Created from a 1939 WPA historically marked schoolhouse, you'll be within walking distance of four lakes and the Otter Tail River. The building features hilltop views from large windows, wildlife habitat, and nearby farmland. Located between two major highways, (Minn. 10 and I-94) approximately 20-30 miles to each. You'll find a variety of restaurants in Battle Lake, 12 miles, and more in Fergus Falls, 15 miles, including a few well-known corporate chains.

The space
You'll walk upstairs to the second floor hall, which opens to two galleries and two bedrooms. Guest bedroom includes a bath tub alcove and closet area, with toilet and tiny sink half-bath, accessible just outside the main guest room door. Unique glass tower is part of the guest room where there's room for an air mattress/child's or two-person sleeping nook, in addition to the main (standard double) bed. A less private queen-size bed is available in the north gallery for a larger group, but not as a separate listing. If you plan to use both beds the cost is an additional $15. Sorry, the place is not handicapped accessible, however, you'll climb kid-size stairs to the second floor.

Where you’ll be

Underwood, Minnesota, United States

To get the flavor of the American Heartland, you can't find a better place than Otter Tail County, Minnesota. We have award winning schools, many musicians, artists, art galleries, live performances, well educated farmers, Norwegian Lutherans, and maverick Unitarians. The only UU church between St. Cloud and Fargo is just six miles down the road. All our kids are above average. Bass Lake, just across the road from the Unitarian Church in Underwood, is a very good fishing lake. Glendalough and Maplewood State Parks are 10 and 15 miles away, respectively. This is one of the most scenic and best kept secret places in Minnesota.

I am a retired university publications editor and lifelong artist. I've had numerous shows of my paintings and a retrospective invitational by the Lake Region Arts Council (serving eight counties). I tend to be reclusive and quiet so I can focus on creative work. I read a great deal, and think about what I've read. If you ask me to engage in conversation I'm likely to have more to say than you want to know. I will leave you alone, if you prefer. Or, if you want to visit my studio, I can share.

Five things I can't live without:
Clear sunlight
Music
Cloth shopping bags
My library
Blank paper and pen

There's a fantastic Unitarian Church only six miles down the road from my place.)

My style of hosting is businesslike, with the possibility of learning from my guests through conversation, etc. I hope you will consider exploring here during the winter as well as summer, especially if you live in the city during the snow time. This is a place that is stress free. Whether you know it or not, if you live in the winter city, you deserve to come here and unwind.

During your stay

Due to the Covid-19 virus, I have divided the space between upstairs and downstairs. You will have access to several rooms upstairs, including the galleries, but not the other bedroom. There's a back door that goes down to the deck, which you may want to make use of. A few times a day I will go up to my room, but usually I will not enter your space unless invited.
