The Space

Come stay with our family in a comfortable, private suite with a private bath and separate kitchen. The suite is located on the third-floor of our 1902 Victorian home. The house is rich with original elaborate woodwork, musical instruments and artwork throughout. The available room has a skylight for bright, natural light and has two twin-sized beds which can be configured into a "king" or separated as needed. An additional mattress may also be available if needed.

Only 12 miles west of New York City, Montclair is a quick, 35 minute train ride to Penn Station - making our house the perfect alternative for travelers, students and couples wishing to tour NYC. We are located within a five-minute walk to the New Jersey Transit Midtown Direct train station at Bay Street. Frequent bus service is also available.

During your stay in our home, you will hear lots of music. Mia is a voice teacher and opera singer, and Violetta is a professional harpist. You will also enjoy a home-made breakfast of your choice (allergies will be considered) created by Mia. Additional meals, voice lessons and English-language instruction can be provided by special arrangement.

The home is located on a beautiful tree-lined street of Victorian homes in artsy Montclair, New Jersey. There are many restaurants of all ethnicities (Ethiopian, Italian, Chinese, Thai, Southern American, etc.). The Montclair Art Museum is a short distance away along with multiple galleries and great shopping.

Free wi-fi, free off-street parking, free washer/dryer, piano, front porch and living room access. We are happy to give touring advice, directions, restaurant recommendations and more.

Due to allergies, we have no pets (and, unfortunately, cannot accommodate any). For those who are also sensitive, we use only fragrance-free detergents.

We look forward to meeting you!

  • Mia is a very gracious host! She is an opera singer, but she doesn't go around the house singing opera! Thank goodness. Just kidding Mia! We had access to a wonderful kitchen upstairs on the third floor right next to our room. In the room itself is a trundle bed two dressers a full closet bookshelves side table and a lamp. The skylight keeps the room bright and cheery. Every morning Mia had a wonderful breakfast of chocolate croissants or muffins or blueberry scones freshly baked and ready. Your choice of using their little espresso machine or make a cappuccino or she'll have a full pot of fresh Trader Joe's coffee. For you sad little tea drinkers out there I suppose you could have that too!
We were in transition between our old apartment and a new one that we were moving into. When we got into a jam trying to move into the new place she let us stay a couple extra days to help out with our situation. You can't have a nicer place to stay or a nicer Hostess. Thank you Mia!

  • Mia was very accommodating to my slightly picky eating habits. Also she gave up her desk for me so I could work when my job had a snow day due to a blizzard. I enjoyed meeting her and her artistic family!

  • While Mia was very nice, the home was in a fine location and was very hospitable, we ended up not spending the night in this location. When we saw the room, we realized that we could get a nicer hotel room for a lower price that night (New Year's Eve). I think the space (and the trundle bed that converts with two smaller mattresses (no box spring) to a queen size ) would be best suited to younger visitors.

  • Mia was a wonderful host! She made us breakfast every morning that we were there, delicious bagels and croissants!! Our room was so comfortable, we had our own bathroom and kitchen. The only regret was that we couldn't stay there longer. She has one of the best laughs I have ever heard! So kind and helpful! We would definitely stay there again. Thanks Mia!!!!

  • Mia was a great host. Location was perfect for the workshop I was attending locally that weekend. I even attended a prenatal yoga class, strolled through a farmer's market, and went shopping . Her home is a short walking distance to the main shopping and delicious restaurant area in Montclair. The room is in an older home and could use some minor repairs in the room/kitchen. Overall, very happy with my stay.

  • The Norrie home was the perfect landing place for me during my move to Montclair. I spent over a week here, and found it to be a perfect balance between warm welcome on the one hand and privacy on the other. Mia's family made me feel at home, and she even helped me find an apartment in the neighborhood! This simply could not have worked out better for me. Thanks, Mia!

  • My daughter and I stayed with Mia for about 5 weeks. Mia set us up perfectly in our home away from home. We had a wonderful spacious room with comfortable beds, private bath and full kitchen. Mia also allowed us to use whatever else we needed in the home (clothes washer/dryer, computer printer, etc).
Mia and her family are vey kind, lovely people who love the arts and are very knowledgable about things going on in the area and in New York. She can direct you to the train station (easy walk) and how to get around. She is happy to help plan your activities.
We were very blessed to have been able to stay with Mia! Hope to see her again soon!

I am an opera singer (trying to develop my own company) and voice teacher. I'm also a mom to three: Tom (18), Violetta (16) and Sammy (14). My husband, David, is an attorney with his own law practice. If you stay with us, you will likely hear some voice lessons going on and my daughter practicing her harp. She is a professional harpist, and we spend a lot of time schlepping her around to gigs! I love to cook and eat out. There are many local restaurants that I can recommend. I also love roaming around New York City (only 12 miles away). I enjoy showing my city off and would be happy to guide you. Reading is a major hobby for me. I love historical fiction. My daughter and I traveled to France and Italy this past summer - truly the best summer of my life. We have hosted students from France for the past couple of years, and we really love having guests in our home. Many years ago, we dreamed of opening an official B&B - this is the next best thing. I have had excellent experiences staying with Air BnB hosts in different cities. I hope you will give us a try!
