About This Listing
Casa Selva Cabinas are the perfect location for couple, individual or small group looking for a peaceful and nature exposed Costa Rican get away. Casa Selva is located 5 miles South of Dominical and 5 miles North of Uvita, right off the Coast Rd (Rt 34). Our location is literally where the Ocean meets the Jungle and full of all the associated charm. There are 3 beaches within a 10 minute drive, excellent surf, and great restaurants with breathtaking views for all tastes and budgets.
Our 4 acre park-like setting is private, safe and unique. The grounds, cabina's and main house were hand built by the owner's internationally recognized craftsmanship. Plentiful and safe wildlife are frequently seen and include: howler and white faced monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds of too many kinds to list. The owners own several dogs (all friendly and well trained) and a horse on the property.
This cabina includes a bedroom/bathroom, a full kitchen, outdoor living spaces with a hammock, an outdoor cooking area, high speed internet, hotwater and a cable TV hookup. There is 1 bedroom that sleeps 2 in a bed, but there are 2 couch beds in the upstairs area. This allows us to accomodate a maximum of 4 guests.
Near by tourist attractions include: The night life of surf town Dominicalito, OSA Zipline Canopy Tours, and a Horseback riding waterfall excursion. Public transportation to Dominicalito, San Isidro and San Juan pick up at a bus stop at the front gate.
Guest, are welcome to walk the grounds or hike up the creek. There is a lovely secluded beach around 100 meters from the property.
Interaction with Guests
We are happy to answer any of your questions and direct you to what you may be looking for. Most of our guests are here to relax and explore. We honor privacy.
Although you are not able to see our neighbors from the Howler Hut, we have a very safe and friendly neighborhood. They are always ready to give a ride when needed. Or help to answer questions.
There is a bus stop right outside our gates. Buses go both North to Dominical, Quepos, San Jose, or South to Uvita, Golfito, Osa Peninsula or Panama.
Other Things to Note
We do Animal rescue. So there are always lots of different Animals on the Property.
Be respectful of the Cabina. Be aware that you are in the Jungle, so living is a bit different. No food left out to attract, ants, insect or other animals. Trash always in bags, and in containers or hung. Be considerate of the other creatures on the property. We guarantee they will be considerate to you.
We do not allow other pets, because of the numerous we already have on the property. There is to big a chance of rivalry.
No smoking is preferred, but we do allow it on the outside deck. NEVER inside the cabina.
When we arrived, there was a wonderful plate of local fruit and a supply of coffee, milk and sugar. What a nice way to start a stay! Millie and Richard met us at the gate and introduced us to the Howler Hut. They went over everything we needed to know, the stove, the hot water etc. They were very friendly and welcoming.
The little house itself is wonderful - you can just patiently sit on the porch and watch wildlife. You don't have to go to a reserve or a park, just stay thereI The place has just about all you need. The wifi was great. Lighting is rather dim - when we mentioned this, the hosts quickly replaced some bulbs with brighter ones - but bring a flashlight if you like to read in the evenings. It was hot and muggy when we were there (month stay April-May) and we were uncomfortable with just the celing fans, so we bought and left 2 free-standing fans.
Our hosts were there if we needed anything, but were very respectful of our space and we never felt like they were watching over us. Loved the area too. There are markets close by and many beaches of all descriptions - just ask Millie!
I would actually give the place four and a half stars if I could. And yes, you should like dogs to stay at the Howler Hut!
Millie met us when we arrived and gave us a short tour of the house. She and her husband Richard made sure that there was a fresh fruit plate in the refrigerator for us. We felt very welcome and expected.
The description was very accurate and the reality of the place actually exceeded our expectations. They are about a half kilometer walk down to a largely deserted beach and far enough back from the road for road noise not to present a problem.
They are set off, largely by themselves and everything around the place functions beautifully
There is no better place to stay in the Dominical/Uvita area and I cannot recommend The Howler hut highly enough. As soon as you arrive you do not only see but you can also feel all the TLC that has been invested in this property and Millie and Richard are the most gracious and friendliest of hosts!
The cabin is beautifully built and very comfortable, especially if you are looking for somewhere to stay for a while. This is the kind of place that feels like home! You will enjoy wildlife and stunning sunsets from the patio and because the property lies just within the border of the jungle the temperature is far more comfortable than down by the beach. Even at the hottest of days the bedroom stays nice and cool at night, with only a ceiling fan and the door and window open (except for the screen door!)
If you are an animal lover you will enjoy your stay even more as Millie and Richards dogs are very lovable and the horse Luke is a charmer, especially if you give him your fruit peel!
There is a nice little beach just across the road and if you enjoy a good hike you can follow the dirt road outside the gate to a beautiful waterfall where you can soak and cool down before heading back.
There is easy access to both Uvita and Dominical even without a car as there is a bus stop just outside the gate.
The Howler hut is a place you want to return to, I know I will!
The cabina is fantastic. It is in the jungle, close to the beach and you can see the ocean through the trees. The cabina is well equiped for cooking and relaxing. There is also a sink to wash your clothes and a rope to hang them. You will hear howler monkeys in the morning and see or hear other animals as well. There is a bus stop (built by Richard and Millie) right by the road, which can help you get around if you can familiarize yourself with the public transportation system. We had a lot of fun at Millie's. She drove us to the Dominicalito waterfall, which is lovely. She also gave us advice on where to get our food. Plus, and it's a huge plus, Millie and Richard are always there to help. On our last day, we were waiting for the bus to Chacarita, which never stoped to pick us up. Richard drove us quickly to the Uvita bus terminal, where we have been able to catch the bus on time. To sum it up, if you go to Dominical, stay at Millie's. You will love it!
Millie and Richard were fantastic hosts. They were very informative prior to our arrival and upon arrival, we received a very warm welcome. The Howler Hut is wonderful and definitely provide the whole 'living in the jungle experience'. Millie and Richard's property is beautiful and we would go back any day!
We had a wonderful one month stay at the Howler Hut. The wildlife all around the hut was amazing. We saw howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, Jesus lizard in the stream, and more birds than I can list here. Millie & Richard were more than helpful in pointing us in the right direction if we needed anything. Somehow I had managed to pack only 1/2 of my swimsuit and Millie actually had one I could use that fit perfectly!! The Favas
The layout of the hut is a little unusual in that you have to go down and around to get to the bedroom/bathroom combo but we soon had adjusted to that. We were sorry to leave so soon and will look forward to returning to Dominical and Uvita in the future.
