The Space

Live in historic, brownstone Brooklyn in a floor-through garden apartment called Toasty Brooklyn. Two bedrooms, one bathroom. Hardwood parquet floors. Classic but uncluttered. Large living room and kitchen. Newly renovated, modern bathroom (2012). Near all major subway lines and only 20 minutes to Manhattan. Peace and quiet, but also in an area renowned for its shops and restaurants.

Step out into a quiet, ivy-covered garden for your morning coffee. Cook meals in the fully equipped kitchen. Use your private entrance to come and go at your whim. Sleep on all new mattresses (2011 and 2012) with fresh cotton linens. Real beds accommodate up to 5 people. Baby cot and high chair on site.

Parking is readily available on the streets of Fort Greene at no cost. Safe neighborhood with families, young professionals, artists, retirees and many who have lived in the neighborhood for a long time. This is charming Brooklyn living at its best.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Upon entry, there is a hallway for storage of your stroller (if you have little ones). Double doors to the apartment lead to a very large living/dining room, 13 x 24 feet, with windows looking out onto our peaceful, tree-lined street. Furnishings: sofa for 2-3 people, a daybed that doubles as a single bed for overflow guests, two comfortable armchairs, and tables, a long, contemporary dining table with dining chairs, a new 32" flat screen Sony TV with cable, an antique sideboard topped with a slab of white marble, including guidebooks and maps of NYC.

In the center of the apartment, with a cut-out (pass-through) connecting it to the living room, the kitchen is huge by NY standards, 13 x 10 feet. It contains a stove with oven and broiler, refrigerator, microwave, large sink, dishwasher, electric kettle, toaster and many cupboards storing every kind of kitchen utensil and cookware you may need. Ample counter space, including two long, stainless steel professional kitchen counters.

A small hallway leads to the large bedroom with a new (2011) queen-size bed, huge closet and views on the garden. There is an air-conditioner in the bottom part of one of the two windows (in summer). Reading lamps and bedside tables on either side of the bed. A desk with lamp and chair and a dresser makes this a well-equipped, perfect bedroom hideaway. There is also a full-length mirror.

Continuing through the hallway is a small bedroom with a new (2012) single bed and extra single bed trundle stored underneath. Closet and doorway to garden. We have a portable crib with sheet, should you need it. The small bedroom has just enough space to fit baby cot and/or the trundle single bed. This is useful if you have kids and want them in their own room. NOTE: this is a very small bedroom and it's a tight squeeze to put extra bed in here! But it works.

In January 2012, we did a gut renovation of the bathroom. It is beautiful and modern, with green-flecked Terrazzo floor tiles, white subway tiles, bathtub with shower, a large, white Caesar Stone counter and under-mount sink. Grohe faucets. Hooks and towel bars. A high-quality exhaust fan that is very quiet and efficient.

Visit the famous Brooklyn Flea a few blocks away, the Olmsted designed park at the end of the block (with jogging paths, playgrounds, tennis courts), or the bustling Farmer's Market on the edge of the park. The neighborhood is filled with interesting restaurants, bars and shops. I grew up in New York City and lived in Paris for 10 years and I can tell you this is my favorite neighborhood, anywhere. Ever!

Near all major subway lines (12 different subways!) and only 20 minutes to busy downtown Manhattan, one stop away on the Q train. Walking distance to other great Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Park Slope, restaurant row in Cobble Hill and Prospect Heights, Pratt Institute, the mansions of Clinton Hill, the urban grit of Vinegar Hill and DUMBO.

Toasty: Brooklyn at its very best.

  • My husband and I were vacationing with my parents for the July 4th weekend in New York City. Everything went smoothly at this garden apartment in Brooklyn. Raphael, Nan's friend welcomed me to the apartment and gave me the tour while my husband unloaded the car. The apartment was freshly cleaned and looked just like the photos. Raphael even ran down to the corner market to get a fresh baguette, butter, orange juice, and milk for the morning. Fresh coffee and tea were supplied as well. We loved having the opportunity to feel like a local living in this charming Brooklyn neighborhood. We had no problem with parking our rental car on the street. The subway is just a few blocks away. It was very convenient for our trips downtown. If you have the opportunity to stay for the weekend, don't miss the Fort Greene Flea Market. It is just a few blocks away with fabulous finds and eclectic food.

  • Nan's place is simply ideal for any 4-5 member family wanting to visit Brooklyn or Manhattan. The apartment is not only gorgeous, but also represents a great example of historic NYC/Brooklyn architecture. Nan was an excellent host: on the first day she welcomed us and offered her help by suggesting both what to do in the city and where to eat. We had an excellent time in New York and to a big extent this was due to the quality of our stay in this place!

  • My family and I had a wonderful time during our stay. Nan was very friendly and welcoming. She provided with us with a list of restaurants and cafes around the area as well as some bagels and milk in the fridge on our arrival! The apartment was also very nice and clean with a spacious kitchen and a cozy family/living room. There were multiple subway stations around the neighborhood, which made it convenient for us to romp around Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.

  • We were delighted with our stay at Nan's garden apartment in Fort Greene. The apartment was clean as a whistle, well equiped and well furnished. Nan even provided breakfast makings -- a baguette, butter, jam, milk and juice and coffee/teas. The location and the neighborhood were great. Highly recommended!

  • A great stay. The apartment is in a great position, in one of the coolest parts of Brooklyn, very well connected to the subway. The place is cozy and well equipped. Nan is a very pleasant person and a wonderful host, a pleasure to talk to. Definitely a great pick.

  • Great place to stay, kind of like being on Sesame Street. We had a wonderful time. All the comforts of home, easy shopping, easy transport. We missed Nan but her assistant was friendly and efficient. We would definitely stay there again.
