Rosie's Lakeside Retreat Homestay is a newly renovated self-catering house in the heart of the Old City of Udaipur. It is located in a quiet back lane just below the city palace. The lane is unfit for cars and tuk-tuks so only the occasional motorbike disturbs the peace when people are going to work in the morning or returning in the evening. It has its own private roof terrace, overlooking Lake Pichola, exclusively for the use of my guests.
This idyllic two floor apartment has been tastefully refurbished with all modern facilities and has been lovingly furnished with traditional antiques sourced from the local area. The traditional bamboo ceilings keep the room cool in summer and warm in winter.
The bedroom has a luxury king size bed with a handmade cotton mattress and the window looks out on to the lake. It is fully air-conditioned and there is also a room heater for chillier winter nights. The room has a music system which supports USB and other media devices excluding CD's. A large selection of books and magazines are provided for guests' pleasure.
The fabulous luxury bathroom boasts 'the best power shower in India', hair dryer and lots of goodies for guests.
There is free Wifi throughout.
Outside the bedroom is the 'breakfast terrace' where guests like to take their morning coffee.
The fully equipped kitchen has a coffee machine, gas hob, fridge and oven, toast and grill.
On the second floor is the beautiful roof terrace looking out over Lake Pichola and the palaces beyond. Super comfy cushions on the traditional hand carved stone jarokhas make for cozy reading or relaxing next to the coal brazier in the evenings. There is another bathroom on the roof with loo and wash basin. This is also where you can find the new yoga mats which are provided for your morning sun salutations.
The house is within two minutes walk of the City Palace, home of the Maharajas of Udaipur, and the famous 15th Century Jagdish Temple with its amazing architecture and intricate stonework. The boat stand, from where to catch one of the regular boats to take you on a sunset voyage around the lake, is practically on the doorstep. There is a rickshaw stand just next to the boat stand with many a willing 'rickshaw wallah' ready to whisk you off on a tour of the old spice, vegetable and pottery markets. Lal Ghat is full of excellent restaurants, interesting antique and vintage stores and there is also a book shop and an Internet cafe. Aditya at Lakecity Holidays will organize days out for you to the beautiful Jain temples at Ranakpur, Kumbhalgarh Fort, Eklinji temple or to see the unmissable Juna Mahal Palace at Dungarpur. He also is able to help with flight, train, bus tickets and money changing.
There are nightly performances of traditional music and dance just up the street.
Despite its central location, Rosie's Lakeside Retreat is located on a quiet side street and offers a peaceful sanctuary from the bustle of the city.
With its romantic sunset views from the terrace it is the perfect base for any couple looking for a holiday with a difference and a 'home from home' in India.
Udaipur is universally known as one of the worlds most romantic cities, earning itself the nickname 'Venice of the East'.
Come and enjoy!
I very much look forward to welcoming you to my house in Udaipur.
Aju, my fabulous housekeeper, comes at 10 every morning except Sunday. She makes the best chai in Udaipur and also gives lovely head massage on request.

Reaching Udaipur at night is a fairytale with lights flickering on every side of the city’s famed centrepiece, the Lake Palace Hotel ((website hidden)) I’m reunited with a dear friend, Rosie Cornwalliswho I haven’t seen since the ‘80’s, when we worked together at Crolla in London (she married the boss and has ancestors who were Governors of India!) and she’s now based in Udaipur. We stay at her beautiful lakeside apartment which she lets through Ashton Kutcher’s website (website hidden). It’s totally gorgeous and great to be in our own place with its beautiful roof terrace overlooking the lake. The apartment is filled with her lovely collection of antiques and unluckily for my baggage allowance it’s all for sale - I buy a fab painted mirror with a pink Hindu God on it! Dinner’s next door at Jagat Niwas ((email hidden)) - we drink far too many bottles of wine over hysterical stories of how naughty we were back in the day! Next day she takes us on a tour down tiny lanes of the Old city to her secret antique haunts where I find glass beaded panels and Indian silver, all which will be appearing in my next Aboydbazaar ((website hidden)) having been redesigned to make them into something modern and contemporary. We say our goodbyes then travel on to Devi Garh ((website hidden)) , an hour outside Udaipur and the most beautiful palace I think I’ve ever seen. Showered with red rose petals as we walk through the massive entrance, we spend a listless and wonderfully relaxing day by the pool ,exploring the palace and generally recharging as tomorrow we leave Rajasthan and head across the border into Gujarat.
The guests have sole use of the breakfast courtyard outside the bedroom suite, the kitchen and the roof terrace overlooking Lake Pichola.
Please note that check in is after 12 noon to allow time for room preparation.

One if the best experiences we've had!
My girlfriend and I went for a little weekend getaway and we loved Udaipur and Rosie's place was very crucial to make that happen. Rosie has a brilliant taste and a lot of passion and it clearly shows through her place. We loved every aspect of how the place was put up and even the smallest thing was taken care off.
We are in love with the house!
The house was exactly the same as described in the listing, actually better! The place is perfect for two with a lovely view of the lake that will give you some privacy too. With an access to your own kitchen its made it convenient for us to make our own breakfast and enjoy it at the lovely terrace. The terrace is the best part of the house with an amazing view of the lake. Sunrise and sunsets were just so amazing to spend some time with your loved ones, with a very thoughtful seating arrangement. The bathroom was very clean and functional and had everything we needed. There were small things that were taken care off and that's what really won our hearts.
Very friendly people and staff!
Aditya is wonderful person to meet and is very helpful. He helped and guided us and made all arrangements with recommendations that really sorted us.
Aju is a very kind and lovely lady. She came on her time and cleared everything for us. Whenever we came back to the room everything was in place and in perfect order.
The location is perfect!
Everything is just a few minutes walk away, literally! Rosie's place is in the center of all the action and good places to eat right out of the lane. For everything else our man Aditya can sort you out.
The whole experience was so smooth and lovely and we loved every bit of it.
We would highly recommend this place to stay in Udaipur and can't thank Rosie and the team enough. We are really looking forward to getting back for more.
What a pleasant surprise Rosie's place is. Firstly the location is perfect right in the middle of the old town but in a quiet corner. Within 2 mins walking distance to great restaurants and cafes and a very helpful tourism desk run by 'pinkie'. The house is beautiful and filled with stunning Indian artifacts. It feels like a little piece of hidden luxury in udaipur that only a few get the opportunity to experience. The rooftop is an ideal spot for early morning coffees overlooking the lake. Everything is so clean ! Adu the house keeper is a dream. She is the nicest human you will ever meet and really takes care of you during your stay. I highly highly recommend this as a much better alternative to a hotel. And if you don't wanna miss out on the luxury of a swimming pool not to worry we discovered a hotel a 1 min walk away that allows outside guests to use their rooftop pool for a tiny fee. There is also the famous shiv niwas hotel a 10 min walk away that also allows for outside guests to use the pool and spa. We looked this place and has been our favorite Airbnb experience world wide so far. Rosie is really good with contact and was so kind to us during our stay. She even had us longer due to a misfortune we had on our travels over to udaipur. A gem.
Rosies Retreat is in the heart of Udaipur, overlooking the lake. Its comfortable, clean and beautifully decorated. The retreat is 5 minutes walk away from the City palace.
Rosie was in touch through out and Aditya and Ajju were wonderful in helping in day to day queries. The Terrace is beautiful to have breakfast and generally sit and enjoy the lake view ; the kitchen is compact and has everything!
If you want to have an authentic experience of living in a traditional Indian "Mohalla"- nothing can be better than this! If you want to go to Udaipur and live in a bubble with lots of space /gardens around then this may not be the ideal place for you!
For food we strongly recommend- Upre , the chocolate room and the cafe inside the palace ( hint- even if you have seen the palace- you can take a 30 Rs ticket and go inside to the cafe)
We really enjoyed our stay at Rosie's beautifully decorated apartment. The view from this apartment was stunning & the location was very central. Every little thing in this apartment has been thought thru. It has the charm of Rajasthan yet amenities that are modern. I would highly recommend staying at Rosie's if you're visiting Udaipur!
Rosie's place was exactly as advertised. The room was beautiful, cosy and by the lake. The people were very helpful, they even helped arrange a car to jodphur. The room
itself is very well located next to the palace and temples.
Would definitely recommend staying here.
Rosie was extremely kind since the first contact to arrange the place and details. Also our arrival was arranged carefully to be taken to the apartment. It was very clean and organized. It's is a charming place and nice details.
In the other hand the price is very very high and unfair for the location itself specially considering Udaipur pricing for very nice hotels just next door, which are less than half price. I took the place expecting more, perhaps my fault. One particular important detail is that you have no privacy at all in the terraces, as the lower one has the neighbour's door exactly attached to it, I mean everytime they go up the stairs to go into their home they are in front of you. (They are a very very warm and lovely family actually). And the top terrace you have neighbour's windows all around also. It might be a fact of the neibourhood style, no problem, but I could never understand it before going, as I wouldn't like this detail. The lady who cleans the place is very kind and helpful also.
Felipe arrived at my apartment with an visa that was not valid for the duration of his stay. We were obliged to ask him to leave a day earlier than he had intended.
He refused to understand the gravity of the visa situation, both for him and for me.
Despite receiving a 20% discount on reservation and a refund from Airbnb, for the night he could not remain in my house, he became extremely unpleasant to both Aditya in Udaipur and myself, by email.
My house has one close neighbour in the shared courtyard.
Having complained bitterly about the presence of a neighbour, Felipe then sent me a mail telling me how often he was playing with their baby. He used the fathers rickshaw for the duration of his stay to get around town and to the airport.
From the roof terrace there is one neighbours terrace across the way (detached). There is never anyone there.
My house is in the centre of the old city, hence there are other houses round about.
This is what one would expect in an urban area.
The point of a 'homestay' is that guests get to experience the life and culture of the community in their chosen country.
This insight cannot be enjoyed from the sheltered and sanitized environment of a hotel.
I have lovingly lavished every care and attention to detail on my apartment for the comfort and well being of guests and it is maintained to a very high standard.
I found this whole episode of this guest very stressful, demoralising and deeply upsetting.
Rosie's Retreat was a wonderful way to experience the heart of Udaipur during my short weekend trip!
I was only able to stay one night at the apartment, but it was a great stay - very clean place, good wifi, awesome view of Lake Pichola, and access to a kitchen. It was overwhelmingly hot during my stay, so I wasn't able to enjoy the garden and rooftop terraces, but they were also lovely.
Aju was very sweet (only met her briefly when she came by the morning of my departure) and Aditya was such a HUGE help with coordinating all my sightseeing needs - I was sad to have missed meeting Rosie during this trip, but perhaps on a future visit to this beautiful city.

About the Host, Rosie
Hello, my name is Rosie and I have been living in Udaipur for twelve years. I have a long connection with India as my ancestor, Lord Cornwallis, was Governor General of India twice (his picture hangs in the house) and my mother's family were involved in the tea and jute business in Assam.
I am an antique dealer specializing in unique decorative treasures from in and around Rajasthan.
I spend my summers in Transylvania where I am restoring The Magic Cottage in the Harghita Mountains. It is soon to be another Airbnb gem.
I love Udaipur and I am sure that you will too. I look forward to being your hostess in this beautiful city of lakes.
