Come stay in your home away from home...in the tropics. 2 blocks away from 2 great surfing beaches. Our light filled suite has an en suite Bathroom, AC, WIFI, and a hearty breakfast are included. Monkeys in the backyard possible....

The Space

This is the perfect place to come to escape the cold, dreary US winter and relax.

Come stay with us in our Surf House - 2 blocks from a gorgeous surfing beach and 2 blocks from another beautiful swimming beach. I moved down to Costa Rica from NYC (trading in my high heels for flip flops!) to surf every day and enjoy the beach, and I hope you can do the same. We have a large house, and have a 2nd floor suite - with a private bathroom - available.

The room overlooks our private pool, and opens up onto a balcony with a beautiful sun deck, which can be used for reading, relaxing and/or morning yoga!

Playa Langosta is a upscale area that's part of Tamarindo. It's a great neighborhood to stay in to enjoy Costa Rica, surf at the nearby breaks in Langosta, and walk on Tamarindo Beach, while being a little separate from Tamarindo. (In other words, you won't hear loud music at night from the clubs!) Tamarindo is a 1/2 mile away, and you can rent bikes nearby.

Breakfast included. We will serve you a delicious hot, hearty typical breakfast. Please let us know if you have any food preferences or needs.

Tamarindo is an amazing place to surf. If you are interested in surfing or learning to surf, my husband is a professional surf instructor and would be happy to take you on surf tours to the fantastic surf breaks nearby, or to give you lessons - if you're just starting out.

Lastly, I'm from NYC. My husband is a Costa Rican surfer. This combination ensure we'll be able to pamper you - the way you want - but you can also get a taste of the REAL Costa Rica. If you're here during the US Winter, we'll can take you to a typical Costa Rica Fiesta, including the Rodeo. It's a LOT of fun and authentic.

  • I cannot speak highly enough of our stay at Helena and Carlos's beautiful home! They are gracious and incredibly helpful hosts; Carlos even cooked delicious, authentic Costa Rican breakfast during our stay. If you are looking for a comfortable place to stay within walking distance to paradise, look no further.

  • What can I say about my stay at Helena, Carlos? It was in one word amazing! I had a very pleasant stay. Helena and Carlos are very friendly people and made me immediately feel comfortable. They are willing to help you whenever they can. The breakfast made by Carlos is a real good start of your day. The room is clean and comfortable. The beach nearby is a real beauty. I would definitely recommend this place to you!

  • Staying with Helena and Carlos was the best! We spent three nights in their beautiful home which is located just down the beach (or street) from Tamarindo. Helena was very quick to respond to all of our questions, an even picked us up from our previous location.
Our room was very spacious and comfortable. We had everything we needed including AC, a balcony, and a private bathroom.
We loved staying here because we had so many options for how to spend our days. We could relax by their refreshing pool, walk down to the beach, walk into town, or take a surf lesson with Carlos! Of course we did all of these things.
Homemade breakfast by Helena was great and there was just something special about staying with a family (Their daughter is the cutest!) The house is also located very close to a small supermarket which will have everything you need. One night we chose to make our own dinner and borrowed the BBQ. It was really nice to have that option. We loved it here and I hope to return someday!

  • I had a great time with Helena and Carlos. Thanks for letting me stay!

    Response from Helena:

Terrific having you! I hope the rest of your trip was excellent!

  • Too expensive and really NOT worth it.

The room is in the family's house and to walk to the house you need to pass their un-leashed dog that as much as patting it nearly got me bitten when needed to access the door.
    Room wasn't clean.

We got lost as the directions were not specified to anywhere but could have been much clearer. We tried calling her 5 different times at local restaurants and hotels but didn't get an answer for over and hour and a half and she was expecting us. When we finally got a hold of her she was short in explaining and did not apologize. The host was not pleasant.

As we were not satisfied we booked another place and she requested us to return the keys without a refund for other reservations.

My point is, if you are headed to tamarindo you will find many other/better choices than this!

Sorry for the negative review, this is the first time i ever left one!

    Response from Helena:

This is our only negative review. And these are the ONLY guests we've had for whom I written a negative review. I think they would be better suited for a hotel. I'm not sure if they have used airbnb before, or if they have traveled outside of the US before. I now get what people say about NYers (hey - don't say that, I'm one too!) and about real estate agents.

These guests asked for a discount before booking. I said yes. I should've just ignored the reservation request, in hindsight. These guests never expressed unhappiness or a bad experience. They did state they were offered a free condo nearby from friends for their 2nd night (they had just gotten engaged! Congrats! - wait, is that even true!?!) .... could they cancel and get a refund? We could not accommodate with such short notice, as we had to turn down other people who wanted to stay with us.

I'm not sure what the real story is here, because my experience with these guests was so weird, uncommon and fraught with lies. In my opinion, these guys are angry they couldn't get their money back and thus are writing a bad review. I've been told how accurate our listing is, so I'm unsure how we could change what we're doing. Anyway, I'm just puzzled.

Arrival: They were unclear about arrival time. They first emailed and said they would arrive around 1PM. We were waiting. At 3PM, they emailed and said they went to visit friends nearby and would be there in an hour. At 4PM, they emailed us they were on the way (from 30 minutes away.) They showed at 6:30 PM. I was waiting here for 5 1/2 hours waiting with the phone next to me. Why would I apologize? It seemed that they were visiting with friends and would arrive when they wanted to.

They are the FIRST GUESTS who have had trouble getting here. There are literally 12 houses in this area and they had a GPS and they had the GPS coordinates. How could we be more clear? Costa Rica does not have addresses or street names.

Every other guest we've had, for the last 2 years, has not had a problem. In fact, it is so easy that guests showed up yesterday without a confirmed reservation (and directions and gps coordinates.)

When these guests called, from a nearby hotel, we immediately went to meet them and brought them to our place.

Cleanliness: The room and house was fully cleaned immediately before they arrived.

Pleasantries: We were incredibly pleasant. We just didn't say yes to their refund request. Because I said no, they were uncommunicative about plans to stay or not, and when they would check-out. Spiteful, maybe? They left, left the room locked, and did not return until late morning. Our cleaning lady was there waiting, to prepare the room for another guest.

Overall: I have been so happy with all of our guests, and so excited to have them stay with us... until these guests. And such a bummer, they are my people (NYers.) Now I get why people say NYers are [redacted].

  • My stay in Playa Langosta at Helena and Carlos' beautiful house was wonderful. They were gracious hosts and I enjoyed my days walking the 10 minutes into Tamarindo. Perfect location, right on the beach and a short distance from the nightlife. They are wonderful and I hope to return in the future!

    we loved having you here!

  • Nothing that hasn't already been said. Everything was great! Nice house. Great location. The neighborhood is peaceful and only a 15min walk to the center of Tamarindo. 5min walk to the beach where you can tan and/or surf. Helena wasn't there during my stay but she left the house in great hands. I always had someone around if I needed something. Overall I had a great experience!

    Response from Helena:

So sorry I couldn't be there personally. REALLY. I'm freezing my butt off up north for a few more nights.

  • Hi Helena,
loved the place and miss the dogs already (Rufalini is the sweetest).

now, that I'm staying in the middle of Tamarindo, right behind Fisch place, I can especially appreciate the peace and quite of Playa Langusta...

    all best,

    Response from Helena:

Max - thanks so much for staying at our place! I hope the rest of your trip goes awesome, and if you're back in town, you'll come visit!

  • Helena and Carlos were fantastic hosts! We were new to the area and Helena was a wealth of information with recommendations for both activities and dining. Carlos cooked us an amazing breakfast each morning. His surf lessons were worth far more than he charged. He had everything we needed (we just needed to walk down the stairs). The personal attention of a private lesson was far more valuable than being in a group lesson. The house had everything we needed and we loved their pets (namely the new pit puppy Rufey!). We definitely recommend having bikes as they make getting to/from town a breeze. Highly recommend this place to anyone that is new to surfing and new to the area!!!!

Mi Ola
Hi! My name is Helena Fogarty. I'm the owner and founder of Mi Ola Surf. I lived in Manhattan (LES) for 15 years and worked in fashion, before relocating down to Costa Rica. Yes - I'm one of those people who actually ditched the city and moved to paradise. Due to my business, I am commuting back to NYC often and using Airbnb to help me find affordable and great accommodations (THANK YOU!) I will be coming to the city 1 or 2 times a month for a couple days with my business partner to sell Mi Ola and look for investors. I would love to stay in your place, and have you be part of the Mi Ola success story!
