Mavhouse Garden Bedroom

House - Private room · N 8th St, Paducah, KY 42001, United States

The Space

The Garden Bedroom overlooks the mixed perennial borders on three sides of the yard. The bedroom feature a king-sized bed and high thread count, all cotton sheets. The windows are large and allow a lot of natural light in during the day.

Two bedrooms are available in the top floor apartment of this 1890s brick home. The apartment also contains a living room, a full, eat-in kitchen, a shared bathroom, and a laundry room. If both bedrooms are booked by the same party, the entire apartment is available for use. If separate parties book the two bedrooms, then the open areas of the apartment are shared. The bedrooms and bathroom lock for security.

Breakfast is when you want it from food provided in the kitchen. Juice, coffee, hot or dry cereal, yogurt, and fresh fruit are typical. Prior to your stay, you will be asked for preferences so you have what you like.

Mavhouse is located in the Lowertown Arts District. The house occupies a corner lot with deep mixed perennial, conifer, and shrub borders on two sides. Many unusual plants make the gardens interesting year round, from the riot of spring bulbs to the Christmas roses (Hellebores) beginning to bloom in December and lasting for months. Guided tours of the garden are available to those interested.

The house is what I call casually formal, as we are not formal people but live in a semi-formal house. It is filled with art, as we are in the arts district and have a family of artists. I love to cook, so for extended stays, expect at least one dinner invitation.

There is public transit available, and the neighborhood is so warm and inviting. We have regular artists in residence, whom we "mother" a bit, so count on lots of help finding things, getting places, or just getting the scope on what's up. Galleries and studios are on most of the nearby streets, waiting for you to stop in.

  • This was a stay at home away from home - Rooms were very comfortable and quiet, good location in walking distance from the downtown area. A great place to get some connection and history to the town too. Our host, Ms Stamper did take great care to make us feel welcome and comfortable.

  • This one is tricky to write, as it's quite hard to describe how utterly incredible it was to stay with Anita for the night. Let's start with the house: it's huge and stunning. We stayed on the second floor, in a big, brightly-lit room with the most comfortable matteress either of us have ever slept on. The rest of the floor has another bedroom, a gorgeous bathroom with a clawfoot tub, a very spacious, well equipped kitchen, and a lovely living room covered in art...much of which was created by Anita's family.

Speaking of which, Anita was gracious enough to invite us for dinner. We met much of the family, almost all of whom are artists. Tal stayed up half the night knitting and chatting with Anita, whose story is incomparable. If you have a chance to hang out with these wonderful people, consider yourself a privileged and lucky individual.

We couldn't recommend Anita or the Mavhouse more warmly. Quite honestly, this wasn't merely the best AirBnB experience we had on our trip, it was one of the best accomondations either of us have ever stayed in. If I could give six stars, I most certainly would.

  • Anita has a beautiful home right in the artist district and within walking distance to "everything"--quilt museum, train museum, bar-be-que even, murals, etc . etc.

Both of the rooms available are large and beautifully appointed! You really have an entire apartment!!!

And, if you are a gardener, you have hit the jackpot--she is quite the expert!!!

  • I went to Paducah for business and pleasure. I liked my room so much that I didn't want to leave it! The Garden Room is enormous with very high ceilings and nice light. The bed was very comfortable. The neighborhood is quiet. On the same floor is a living room decorated with interesting artwork. In fact, all the walls are hung with original art, which is appropriate for a B&B in a thriving art community. The kitchen is large and stocked with excellent coffee. Anita is a gracious host. I asked if she would tell me about the plants in her large garden and she gave me a tour. I took a lot of pictures. I can't think of anything negative to say about Mavhouse. If you book a room there, be sure to allow extra time to soak up the ambience of the house and garden. You will want to linger.

  • Our stay at the Mavhouse was truly wonderful. From the day we booked our trip, Anita was amazing and attentive to making our stay a great one, from taking our requests for breakfast or reserving a pack and play for our little one. The best way I can describe staying with Anita was that it was like staying with family (the kind of adopted family that will go out of their way to make you feel at home and comfortable.) We enjoyed our stay and wish we had more time to spend in Paducah and with Anita!

The room was spacious, the artwork fascinating, and the house itself was both highly livable, unique, and a great location to explore Paducah, KY. We were in town for a wedding, but still managed to stop by the farmer's market downtown (based on a recommendation from Anita and her daughter.)

  • Anita keeps a beautiful and comfortable home! Her hospitality began well before our stay as I got to know her via email. And the Mavhouse was the perfect stop on our drive. The private second-floor space had everything we needed and more: a spacious, comfortable bedroom; a clean, well-stocked bathroom and kitchen; a charming living room; airy windows and beautiful local artwork. Her garden is magnificent. My husband and I loved exploring Paducah too, and would highly recommend a trip to Anita's Mavhouse.

  • Anita was a fantastic, warm and welcoming host. We felt very at home while staying at her place. We had the entire upper floor to ourselves, which had two bedrooms, a full bathroom, living room, and full kitchen. The space is beautiful and very well decorated. Very homely. Anita gave great recommendations for dinner and had delicious food for our breakfast. ABSOLUTELY would stay at her place in Paducah if we had the fortune of passing through again.

  • Mavhouse was built in the late 1800's but has been completely updated with an upstairs apartment . During my stay, I walked to several art studios in the neighborhood. Mavhouse is decorated in original art and Anita always has something blooming in the garden. The upstairs apartment has two large bedrooms (that Anita rents), a shared bathroom, a full kitchen and living room. Anita stocked the kitchen with breakfast items and we served ourselves. My bedroom had a king bed, a sofa, chair, plenty of storage space and a TV. I was very comfortable!

I am a retired university professor and administrator, first from the University of Southern Mississippi, then from Lambuth University in Jackson, Tennessee when that school closed in 2011. I have also worked as a research specialist and as a public school teacher. I would find retirement extremely trying were it not for being the caregiver and coach to my newest granddaughter, Wren, who is a source of constant delight. I also am a fanatic gardener and write articles for gardening magazines. I love writing of all sorts and have published a few poems, several textbooks, and articles. To fill the void in my report-writing life, I volunteer with the Paducah Civic Beautification Board and the Paducah Arts Alliance, the group responsible for creating an artist-in-residence program for the city. Cooking is another love, especially big meals with lots of company. My children and friends like to call these events "feasts," and that is a good description. In the coming season I will be extending my back yard tomato patch into a kitchen garden, as the whole family loves fresh things to eat. When not cooking, writing, caring for my granddaughter, or managing Mavhouse, I love needlework. Mostly I knit, but occasionally I will spend extended periods of time with counted cross stitch.
