Dotty’s Rules

This is why we can't have nice things!

The abuse of Dotty’s hospitality leads to serious repercussions. I can’t stress this enough. After 8pm the headcount on the property must be no more than 6. There is a $25 charge for every guest found on the property after 8pm who’s not included in the reservation guest count. The number of people entering the house is monitored via video camera outside the house. If you are having a family gathering from 3pm-8pm, that is acceptable, but prior arrangements must be made and anyone found on the property not included in the reservation after 8pm will be charged a $25 fee automatically no questions asked.

What you can expect from this house:
Fresh sheets on made beds
A clean 60 yr old bathroom
A clean kitchen with older appliances
Floors vacuumed and mopped
Convenient location to the best of the urban environment
Wood counters that have permanent stains on them
Food in the fridge
The ability to smoke cannabis in the house. No cigarettes indoors.

What you should not expect from this house:
This will not be like the commercial vacation home experience you rented at the beach last summer. You will not find an empty fridge that requires you to go to the grocery store for breakfast foods the next morning. You will not be asked to do an hour of cleaning and stripping the beds and running laundry when you check out. When I travel, these are the things I am looking for and that is what I am offering.
This house is only available on a limited basis and is marketed for its convenience, ease of check in, amenities(outdoor and indoor) and funky vibe. It is not run by a commercial enterprise. I open my house up for guests so I can afford a home for my children during the time the house is not available for rent.

Airbnb in Portland:
This Airbnb is permitted by the city under the following condition:

The law states “Hosts with an accessory short-term rental permit are required to occupy the residence for at least 270 days during each calendar year.” This Airbnb is completely private to the guests. The basement is a completely separate private unit in compliance with city law. Guests are not allowed in the basement. Hosts are not allowed in the Airbnb unit during your stay without your permission. Any short term rental not operating in this manner with a host onsite is operating illegally.

The first time you get a knock on the door after 9pm to turn the music off, a $10 charge. The second knock on the door after 9pm, $50 charge. There will not be a third knock, just a call to the police.

Checking in: (after 4pm)
extra beds: find air mattress and linens for the couch in the mirror closet by the front door

Checking out: (before 11am)
Place used towels in the hamper in the bathroom.
REMEMBER to look around for forgotten items

Pets: an additional $20 dollar one time pet fee per stay.

The Neighborhood:
The area you are now in is called Hosford-Abernethy because Abernethy elementary is inside the uniquely layed out plat that is the historic Ladd’s Addition neighborhood, a french inspired design filled with traffic circles and rose gardens. The elementary school is the best place to take your dog to play catch. Just go north 4 blocks on 17th to Division -our main thoroughfare - and there is the very large red brick church. Make a left on division and go three blocks and you will see the very large field for dogs next to Abernethy Elementary. Ladd Circle is just northeast of the school along Elliot Ave and is also a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the sunshine. The rose gardens of this neighborhood are some of the oldest rose gardens of our fair Rose City. But always walk north and east from here to experience this beautiful neighborhood(except for the Ford District and the tram at 11th and Division). Avoid going south to Powell Blvd and crossing over this highway on foot.

Laurelhurst Park at Stark and 37th was designed by Olmsted and is a wonderful example of how easy it is to get away from the city just a few blocks from busy thouroughfares. For the closest access to nature, go to the Hawthorne pier just a mile away and soak up the city views by the water by OMSI, or better yet walk over the Tilikum Crossing and back, the only no-car bridge of its kind in America.

Neighbors and ZERO MUSIC - AT ALL - AFTER 9PM:
The house is only available as an airbnb through the kindness of our neighbors. There is only five feet between the houses. We want you to have fun, but the risk in noise complaints from the neighbors is a major concern and a threat to Dotty’s survival as an airbnb. Don't be the one that ruins it for everybody else. This is a working class neighborhood and folks like their peace and quiet.

There is no daily cleaning service. And also no cleaning fee. This is so that the first price you see in the app is the final price you pay(minus taxes and airbnb fees). Guests are therefore expected to make some attempt at restoring the place to the state they found it. Ask and ye shall receive if the lawn needs a mow, help starting sauna, or other concerns. Please take that sentiment into account in your review. Many people appreciate seeing food in the fridge. The host believes in the sharing economy still and hopes you share that belief. Waste not want not. This is Portland. Be glad the house doesn’t have compost. We are diy and solar powered. It is only an airbnb 15 days a month when the host is not a single parent.

Dotty’s Towel Policy
with a hot tub providing so much fun for her guests Dotty’s towels tend to get used up quickly. If you can please limit towel use to one per guest per stay. Management knows this isn’t always realistic for people staying more than one or two nights, but fewer exceptions the better. Dotty’s host will leave as many clean towels as possible.

Outdoor Amenities (The Porchlight):
Lights for the outdoors are on the power strip just by the grill. Remember to turn them off at the end of the night

Outdoor heater. Turn propane on at the tank underneath. Turn the dial to the light position and press knob down, press the red button to light while holding the dial down. DO NOT MOVE HEATER. REMEMBER TO TURN OFF HEATER WHEN DONE AND TO TURN IT OFF AT TANK BELOW.

Do not move the furniture on the deck. Do not place other furniture on the deck that doesn’t have plastic bottoms on the legs. If you scratch the deck, I will ask for damages.

The clawfoot tub has both hot(red hose) and cold water(green hose) available, so feel free to fill it up for a nice relaxing soak. The privacy panel will ensure a private setting. Bear with us as we make more of these privacy panels and enhancements for guests to enjoy.

take a towel with you on your way to the spa
the spa, especially in summer, will switch to Ec(Economy) mode and the temp will be lower. To get maximum heat, switch it back to St(Standard) mode by holding the “Temp” and “Light” buttons at the same time. It will cycle through Ec, St, and Sl. Make sure to leave it on St. This will ensure maximum heat.
dripping all over the house with wet suits on is a bit of a mess, and it is a private deck by the hot tub so it is preferred that you change outside after using the tub before coming back in, knowing of course that can’t always happen for everyone. REPLACE COVER WHEN FINISHED

Dotty’s Sauna:

Many Americans are unfamiliar with sauna, please don’t be intimidated. It is incredibly good for your mind and body, leaving you truly clean and relaxed

Inside sauna, turn the right timer dial on the sauna stove past 1 o’clock (you will hear a ‘ka-chunk’).

Turn the timer left just a little bit towards 0.

Second ‘ka-chunk’ means it’s heating and the timer is counting down. It takes at least 45 mins to heat up. After the timer hits 0 it will ka-chunk and turn off.

Repeat above process for longer sauna 1hr at a time. There is an electric candle for a nice peaceful light. Fill up water buckets and throw water on the rocks. Jump in the cold soak - hose nearby. Enjoy!

Cars, trains, bikes: Public bikes(orange Biketown bike) are for rent at 21st and Clinton, a few blocks away. They can be rented very cheaply hourly and only $12 for the whole day. Uber or Lyft is never more than 5 mins away. You can catch the 4 on division to downtown, or take Max orange line train at 12th and clinton to downtown

Groceries: New Seasons (20th and Division) is like a local Whole Foods, everything an educated food consumer could ever want. New Seasons hot food bar and salad bar is the cheapest, easiest way to feed yourself when you’re needing something quick. Safeway is at 27th and Hawthorne if you want all the mainstream brands. Fred Meyer( 39th and Hawthorne )offers everything under the sun, like a local Target.

Restaurants: (^ = walkable, * = personal favorite)
This would take way too long to really do justice. The best thing about Portland is that it’s incredibly easy to find truly excellent food.

RESTAURANTS BY MEAL (longer list in attachment):
Dollar oysters at Jacqueline Clinton & 21st, 5-7 M-S. Get there early.
Breakfast: ^*Pine State Biscuits, ^Genies
Lunch: ^*New Seasons, the food carts at 12th and Hawthorne(Chicken n Guns personal favorite) , ^*The Baker’s Mark, Hawthorne Asylum food cart pod at 11th and Madison
Dinner: ^*Teote, ^Bollywood Theater, Olympia Provisions, Kati(vegan Thai)
Pizza: The 7 dollar carryout special from ^Dominos. ^*Hammy’s ^*BlackBird Pizza, *Hotlips, ^* Scotties. ^* The food carts at 11th and Hawthorne(Hawthorne Asylum)

But really pick a place blindly on the map and you are likely to not be disappointed. Portland has the most restaurants and bars per capita in the US. And The Washington Post just named Portland the best food city in the US.

Bars and Breweries: ^Apex, ^*Beermongers, ^*Nightlight, ^*Dots, ^*Clinton St. Pub, ^Double Barrel, *Gigantic, *Hair of the Dog. Portland has more breweries than any other city in the world.

Dotty’s TV: The comcast remote controls everything. Select “TV input” to change input. DVR and on demand and Netflix under Xfintity > Apps.

Parking: You can pretty much always find parking within the block, Dotty has actually never seen anyone towed. Dotty doesn’t miss having a driveway.

Safety: Portland has a much lower crime rate than similar American cities of its size. Even though there are a lot of homeless, they are generally survivalists and not criminals. You can expect to see them struggling to find their way. But despite the high homeless population, this is a safe neighborhood with expensive homes and well tended gardens.

Lastly, Dotty says: “Go out there and Embody Your Amazing!!!
-or relax, lounge on the deck, and find some peace and tranquility. Dotty loves to help but loves a good nap too

During your stay

I can sometimes be there to greet but more often than not I will leave you to find everything on your own. You may see me in the backyard ducking in and out of basement unit to do laundry and maintenance.
