The Space

I have a spacious and comfortable Colonial Revival home in the heart of North Adams' downtown historic district just a 5 minute walk to Main Street, a 15 minute walk to Mass MoCA, and literally next door to the MCLA campus. I have four bedrooms available, but the fourth will only be prepared if specifically requested or in the event there are more than 6 guests. The house has 2 living rooms, a formal dining room, fully equipped kitchen and pantry, 1 1/2 bathrooms, a large wrap around porch, and a private backyard patio and garden. All bedrooms have plenty of comfortable, high quality bed linens, blankets, pillows, and towels.

Bedroom #1 has a very comfortable double sized mattress and is furnished with a hand-painted cottage Victorian style bedroom set including dresser with drawers, and two comfortable, upholstered armchairs. It accommodates 1-2 people and can fit a single or double air mattress in the room as well (I currently have an extra double mattress that can be used).

Bedroom #2 has a queen sized bed, an antique desk, and a comfortable loveseat situated in the sunny bay window. (I'm currently refinishing the original trim on several of the windows in this room).

Bedroom #3 has two twin beds along with a wooden arm chair, a nightstand, and a small set of drawers for storage.

Bedroom #4 has a double mattress/box spring, a desk, and loveseat.

There is one air conditioner upstairs and one downstairs which seem to do a fine job of keeping the house comfortably cool.

I am one block from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and a five minute walk from Main Street, the heart of downtown North Adams. You would be a 15 minute walk to Mass MoCA or a 15 minute drive to the Clark Art Institute and Williams College in Williamstown. There are over a dozen restaurants within walking distance as well as a Planet Fitness gym, grocery store, shops and galleries. Windsor Lake is a 15 minute walk or less than a 5 minute drive and the perfect place for an early morning or end of day swim.

You have full access to a modernized, well-equipped kitchen and pantry with enough pots, pans, utensils, and dishes to entertain. I ask that you leave your own pots/utensils at home since I have more than enough and have had things mistakenly mixed up/taken. The house includes a formal dining room with the added warmth of a fireplace insert. If you enjoy the warmth and crackle of a fireplace feel free to throw a few logs on the fire.

There are two living rooms. Living room #1 has a pellet stove and flat screen tv with theater surround sound along with plenty of comfortable seating. Living room #2 has a sectional sofa and piano. Plug your laptop into the flat screen tv or turn on the Roku and kick your feet up to watch a movie, surf the web via my wireless connection, listen to music, or just read a book. For those of you unfamiliar with Roku, it streams many online channels (video, radio, etc...) to my tv via wifi. It is connected to Netflix, HuluPlus, AmazonPrime, and Pandora accounts among many others.

There is one full bathroom with a shower and two sinks on the second floor and a spacious, newly renovated powder room/half bath on the first floor. The half bath is fully functional but I'm still in the process of completing some finishing touches (trim painting in particular).

The house is well-stocked with board games of all kinds, books, and two adult bicycles. Although there is no access to the washer and dryer there is a laundromat just 1 1/2 blocks away on Ashland Street.

Off-street parking is available for up to 2 cars and there is a large front porch with seating for 7+ for soaking in some sun or just catching a breath of fresh air. My home is a non-smoking environment, although smokers may use the yard and/or porch for smoking as long as the butts are disposed of properly. The yard is very nicely landscaped with flowers and flowering trees that blossom from Spring through Fall, a gas grill on the back porch, and seating for 13+ people in the backyard garden patio and four more on the four-seater wooden lawn swing.

Guest Access

Fully equipped kitchen, TV-Roku/Hulu/Netflix/Pandora (music), WiFi, board games, etc...

  • Kurt was a good host and made every effort to ensure that we were comfortable. The house is a lovely, clean older home in the process of being restored. The bedrooms were good sized and the beds comfortable. (The stairs are a little creaky so would recommend keeping the bedroom door shut if you are a light sleeper:-) Artwork fills the house very creatively. Quiet neighborhood. 10 minute walk to Main Street in North Adams.

  • We had a great time staying at Kurt's amazing home. It was so big, beautiful and very comfortable. It is in walking distance to Mass Moca, the grocery store and is situated in a very nice neighborhood. The kitchen was great and very easy to cook in. I recommend it to anyone, it was a great experience and we would surely return some day.

  • What a fantastic Columbus Day weekend in the Berkshires. Kurt's beautiful house is close to everything. He did an excellent job of introducing us to his place and giving insider tips on local events and great food recommendations. Hiking and biking nearby are outstanding and the house is fantastically quirky with art everywhere. Kurt was warm, friendly and welcoming. He truly wanted us to enjoy his space.

  • My girlfriend and I, along with our two best friends, planned a very last-minute weekend relaxation trip to the Berkshires. Kurt was extremely prompt and responsive, which was so important given our need to book quickly. Kurt was also very friendly and accommodating throughout the booking process and the weekend itself. His house is beautiful and spacious, and it was immaculate and fully stocked with travel essentials (kitchen supplies, linens, towels, etc.) when we arrived. The house is a perfect place to relax; Kurt has a cozy pellet stove (like a pot-belly stove but without the smoke!) in his living room, plenty of space to relax, and his house is filled with interesting and fun artwork. The house is close to the center of North Adams, and within short driving distance to the Mt. Greylock area of the Berkshires, Williamstown, and even the southern Green Mountains of Vermont. We would enthusiastically recommend booking with Kurt, and this house in particular if you are looking for a peaceful experience in the Northwest Berkshires or the surrounding area!

  • House was perfect! Rented it with a couple of my girlfriends and their boyfriends. We had 8 total people and we all fit comfortably. Overall it was a great experience.

  • MCLA hosts a leadership academy each summer. Kurt's beautiful home is right next campus in a convenient and quiet location.

Whether you are a family dropping your child off at school for the first time, or you're in town for one of the many arts festivals, this home is a perfect choice.

My classmates and I rented the entire home for two weeks, and we couldn't be happier. There were four comfortable beds in three bedrooms, plus plenty of room for additional mattresses.

Kurt is a wonderful host. We were busy with class work, so Kurt allowed us access to his wireless router. It had plenty of bandwidth for seven students.

He communicates clearly and is flexible for any person's unique needs. Our group was very active, so he provided us two bicycles for riding around town. We needed to prepare a few large meals, so we used his spacious kitchen and cookware to prepare a pulled pork feast and other smaller dishes.

If you're just passing though and need room for the night, or you need a home to spend a month, I give Kurt's home my highest recommendation!

  • Kurt's home is gorgeous. It's lovely for a couple's getaway or for a small group. There is more than one living room which is great for hanging out and having alone time at the same time. The kitchen is totally stocked if you love to cook and the grill is right outside the kitchen door. Kurt was very courteous leaving us good instructions and making sure we had everything. The beds were great and the two kid's beds were adorable. My kids loved them! There are lots of beautiful art books all over the house as well as a wide variety of art. The neighborhood is very quiet. We had a great time.
Only drawbacks were no AC in the house, (although luckily it was a very mild weekend), and only one bathroom. But the positives more than made up for it.
    Other things to note:
MASS MOCA is literally around the corner and I would recommend it highly. If you have kids, there is a kids program there called KIDSPACE which is totally free and open every day. Kids can make art and sculptures and the staff is lovely.
The beach at the lake is a 10 minute drive, also recommended.

  • We rented Kurt's place for a long weekend and couldn't have asked for a better experience. His house is beautiful and spacious and the kitchen was very well equipped for our needs. Kurt was great to communicate with as we booked it several months in advance. He was very accommodating with our late arrival as well as just being super helpful overall. We'd love to stay at his place in the future!

About
I moved to North Adams from Boston, MA 11 years ago, drawn by the growing arts community, year-round culture, local historic architecture and natural beauty of the lakes, rivers and mountains. I am outgoing, enjoy the outdoors--whether hiking, swimming, biking or gardening, and I love doing restoration work on my house. I place close family relationships high on my priority list and have a group of really wonderful (and fascinating) friends who've become my "chosen" family. I owned a contemporary art gallery in North Adams for 5 years and have been on numerous boards of directors for area arts organizations each of my 11 years in the Berkshires. In addition to having a background in arts management I have worked for a number of years as a project management consultant for technology organizations. I shop and eat locally whenever possible--I like to support my friends and neighbors in contributing to our community. I have traveled extensively world-wide (Europe, Asia/Asia-Pacific, US) and some of my favorite experiences and memories are related to the people I've met along the way. I thrive on hearing about other people's life experiences and stories.
