The property was better than we expected- larger than it seemed from the listings page. We were made to feel very welcome by the host who had gone to a lot of trouble to put special little touches throughout the home. There was a bottle of wine, mince pies, a warm fire and lots of lit candles awaiting us. Very thoughtful details such as hot water bottles, choccies on the bed side tables and bath robes with slippers were also in place. If you can force yourself to leave the wonderful property, the surrounding area is stunning and our host provided helpful maps and information.
We (3 adults and 2 children) staid 10 days at Skelling Rest and enjoyed every minute. The house and the garden are lovely, the kitchen very-well equiped and the rooms (the bath-rooms as well) are affectionately decorated. Thank you Mairead for the warm welcome and the tips you gave us.
We were all enchanted by the house, its location and the view from the terrace. We had a lovely time at Skelling Rest. Not only the house is located beautifully but also equipped and furnished with taste which made us stay even more enjoyable. Mairead gave us warm welcome and provided with all the information and recommendation of the area. Thank you a lot Mairead! Daniel, Natalia, Anita and Hanna.
What can we say. Mairead welcomed us perfectly, showed us around and offered so much advice and guidance. The location is wonderful and the views are simply stunning.
Once mastered, exiting onto the road is easy even with a big vehicle such as ours.
The hot tub is a real treat and one that was seriously taken advantage of and with the afforded views, not be missed.
There are just so many walks in and around the area, that it would take weeks to do them justice. Valencia Island is highly recommended, with the walk to the lookout tower a stiff workout and following on, the loop back to the car park. Not long, but at around three miles, up and down, we really knew we had burnt the calories.
Sunsets were simply awe inspiring and my wife took the opportunity of night after night taking photos. Indeed, the entire area was a photographers dream. Spare batteries, charger and large memory cards a must.
Quiet nights in were (website hidden) was limited but that was what we wanted to get away from. peace, quiet, tranquility. All abundant.
Meals out. Best was Dooleys seafood restaurant and a seafood linguini that had so much crab in it............ Followed closely by the Smugglers which had great views and an excellent Cabernet wine that was suspiciously peppery for a Cabernet but I am not complaining as it was gorgeous and warranted a second glass.
We could go on and on. But, to sum up.
Marvelous location, great house, unbelievable views, HOT TUB, charming and a wonderfully friendly host [Mairead, you are a star], some great local restaurants, fuel cheaper than the UK, quiet, peaceful, relaxing. And, a place we would gladly return to and highly recommend.
Not long enough a visit. Should have gone to Skellig Michael. A missed opportunity. But a darned good reason to go back.
P and M
We had a wonderful time at Skellig Rest! Mairead gave us a very warm welcome and was always willing to help us in any way (thanks for the flu recipe: Whiskey, Lemon and honey! ;-)). The house is lovely with lots of affectionately decorated details, the view stunning! Definately a home far away from home, that we highly recommend!
