About this listing

Enjoy the privacy of your own bedroom and bathroom in our sun-drenched 125 year old townhouse, located directly on the beautiful High Line in Chelsea. Our home is optimally situated for exploring Manhattan. Guest quarters comfortably accommodate two.

The space

Upon arriving in our home, you will settle into the privacy and comfort of your own bedroom and your own private bathroom. Our home, a 125 year old townhouse located in the heart of Chelsea, consists of 2,500 sq feet (232 sq meters) of soaring atrium ceilings, tons of natural light, and spacious comfort. We live directly on the High Line among Chelsea's many art galleries, bookstores, and quiet green spaces. We're just one block east of the Hudson River, where extensive biking and jogging trails, a world class sports center, and rolling lawns of open park space are at your fingertips. Within walking distance are numerous restaurants, grocery stores, shops, post offices, banks, bicycle rental agencies, 24-hour pharmacies, etc.

Public transportation is excellent in the neighborhood: the M11 bus to the Upper West Side stops in front of our building (with service to Midtown, the Museum of Natural History, Central Park, Columbia University, Harlem, etc.), and the E and C subway lines are just two blocks east (the E train is a very economical and convenient way to get to/from LGA and JFK airports). The M23 crosstown bus stops across the street from our building, traveling to the East River and stopping at all the Avenues along the way. The Flat Iron Building, the Meatpacking District, the West Village, and Penn Station are all minutes away on foot.

Our place is divided into two stories, with the guest bedroom, full guest bathroom, immense kitchen, and open living room located on the lower level (consisting of 1250 sq feet---see photos). Other than the occasional trip to the shared kitchen, we do our utmost to enhance our guests' visit by remaining on the upper level (where our two hooligan cats prefer to stay except for their feeding time in the kitchen). A continental breakfast consisting of coffee, tea, juice, yogurt, breads, jams, and butter is provided in the morning. Guests have their own mini-refrigerator and may also use the microwave oven, gas stove, iron/ironing board, and cooking utensils. The clothes washer is available only with our supervision at a cost of $7 per load of wash. We only ask that guests treat our home as if it were their own, just as we do when we travel and are hosted by others.

The guest bedroom offers full blackout window shades, a large closet with hangers, a set of chest of drawers, a DVD-capable flat screen LED high definition television with cable, and two single beds with Sealy mattresses and Egyptian cotton sheets (640 thread count). Maximum capacity is two. The bedroom is on the west side of the building, so it is protected from the ambient noise of the busy avenue. The full bathroom is dedicated solely to guest use and is located next to the guest bedroom; it offers a shower, hair dryer, and basic essentials for a "hotel-like" stay (i.e., shampoo, soap, razors, toothbrushes, etc.). We take pride in providing a super clean environment, including (of course!) fresh bath towels and bedding.

The apartment is a walk-up without elevator. However, there is only one and a half flights of stairs to negotiate to our floor. The building does not offer handicap access. Wireless internet is included. **Because our building does not have a doorman, we cannot receive packages for guests either before or during their stay.**

The rules of the house are: no parties, no entertaining strangers at night, no smoking, and absolutely no drugs. We open our home to guests with the understanding that we will respect each other's desire for copacetic cohabitation. We provide as much privacy and tranquility as our guests desire, yet we are also happy to share a bottle of wine, to break bread together, and to discuss Manhattan, travel, culture, etc. Above all, we want our guests to enjoy their stay in our home and to return often! Two night minimum stay, please.

Guests take full responsibility for any accidents, injuries or illness that occur while on the premises. By accepting this reservation, it is agreed that all Guests are expressly assuming the risk of any harm arising from their use of the premises. Guests recognize that they may personally purchase insurance to protect themselves in such events.

Getting to/from the three airports is very easy. From LGA, take the Q70 LTD bus (i.e., the express bus to Roosevelt Ave). At Roosevelt, transfer to the E subway toward Manhattan (total cost $2.75). From JFK, take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station. Transfer to the E subway toward Manhattan (total cost $7.75). From EWR, take the AirTrain to the airport train depot. Transfer to the NJ Rail to Manhattan's Penn Station (total cost app. $13.00 per person). Then, take the E subway downtown one stop, or take a taxi to our home. You can also walk from Penn Station if the weather is nice. From the E subway train, exit at 23 Street station in Manhattan. Walk two blocks to Tenth Ave. We live a few steps from the northwest corner of Tenth Ave and W 23 St. Also, the MegaBus drop off point is within walking distance of our home.

Guest access

Guests enjoy access to a private bedroom, private bathroom, the shared kitchen, and shared living room.

LOCATION: right next to the beautiful Highline Park, a scenic (check out the architecture) short walk to subway, surrounded by bus stops, in the heart of gorgeous Chelsea - you won't be disappointed! Mum and I felt perfectly safe travelling to and from at all hours of the day and night. FOOD: We loved having so many great options for eating out right at our doorstep. Art and Ed kindly provided us with coffee and breakfast items and also recommended some awesome places to eat lunch and dinner. If you're lucky, they might even whip up their signature dishes for you - Ed, I'm still thinking about that Navy bean soup :) OUR ROOM: oh so comfy beds, perfect temperature, quiet (even though there was renovations happening in the building we didn't hear a thing), TV was great to chill out to, a big plus was power points everywhere for us to charge our gear, sufficient wardrobe space and the bathrobes were a lovely touch! We slept like babies. BATHROOM: Spotless, clean, our own space to use with everything we needed right next to our room which was super handy. KITCHEN: Personally, I loved this space the most as it was the hub of Art & Ed's place. A light filled, clean cozy area to have breakfast while watching people walk the highline, recount the day/night adventures to Art & Ed and if you're deemed acceptable, play with Castor & Pollux (the tabbies). Got my mum's stamp of approval for clean & tidy too :) LOUNGE: We used the kitchen area mostly but we loved the soft music in the lounge as we came home. ART & ED: Talk about raising the bar - my mum's bucket list trip to NYC was made extra special by these two stand-out hosts. Genuine care for our need for space and a willingness to interact with us, share their stories and listen to ours really helped us to connect with the new Manhattan. Art's communication from the start reassured us that things were organised! Art was instrumental in prioritising our sight-seeing (the UN tour & The MET rooftop was a great tip) - he's just a wonderfully kind person that we are so grateful to have met :) Ed is full of awesome stories and I wish we had more time to chat!! Thanks for the movie too Ed :) Castor & Pollux - the space wouldn't be fun without these gorgeous creatures. I'm not a cat person but I loved these two. They keep to themselves and are immaculately clean. VALUE: If you're looking for the best of NYC & Airbnb combined, you can't go wrong with these hosts. Can't recommend highly enough.

A lovely welcoming home, more spacious than I expected in NYC. My (adult) son and I shared a room, but with a full kitchen and other areas available to us, we were quite comfortable and never crowded. And our hosts were welcoming if we wanted info or just to chat, but we also felt comfortable staying to ourselves. This was an amazing first-time airbnb experience

Great place and close to transport and restaurants. Great location. True to description. Would highly recommend. Extremely helpful hosts. Good value. One flight of stairs to carry suitcases but Arthur did this but it was not expected.

A beautiful home in a perfect location. As much privacy as we needed or wanted. Central to everything from the theatre district to the Village. A great place to stay for a vacation and much more affordable than a hotel.

The location is unbeatable and the company is fantastic! Art and Ed are very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of NYC and have a lot of insight to offer. They were amazing hosts - kind, considerate, thoughtful, helpful and more. I highly recommend staying here for your next trip to the city.

I stayed here while in town for a trade show. The location could not have been better and the highline made the walk to the show so much more enjoyable. There are many great places to eat and a CVS right across the corner. Art and Ed were wonderful hosts. They offered many suggestions that never let us down. Their place is beautiful, very clean and super comfortable. I would return for the lovely stay but also for their fun company!

Arthur User ProfileArthur is a superhost.

Along with Ed (my better half, pictured on the right), I strive to build a growing base of happy and loyal AirBnB clients. We're both fairly quiet guys: I have a doctoral degree and enjoy researching/writing, and Ed is a retired dentist now working in Manhattan real estate. We're very tidy, laid back, and respectful of guests' desire for the same. We're also very proud of New York City and are always happy to share our knowledge of the city's history and offerings. Traveling to world capitals and exotic places is our passion: I speak French and Portuguese fluently, and Ed speaks Spanish. We absolutely love hosting guests from all over the world, and we're always happy to interact with guests as much or as little as they like, so conversation over a bottle of wine is always welcome!
