Two rooms separated by a door- good for an extra person (futons available for an extra person). Large bed/sitting room with pillowtop queen bed. Gorgeous views of the West Maui mountains and the ocean, but away from the heavily touristed areas. On the side of the mountain, you can get a head start to watch the sun rise at the top.
Makawao is an historic paniolo (hawaiian cowboy) town, and we are a ten minute walk from the shops. You will arise to the sounds of birds chirping and roosters crowing (my daughter wrote this phrase as a tactful way of letting you know that we have roosters in the neighborhood!). We are 20 minutes from the airport in Kahului, and about 35 minutes from Kihei where the best swimming and snorkling is. We experience cool breezes on the mountainside, and A/C is never needed. Beautiful sunsets, and just enough rain for rainbows. Close to a 24 hour supermarket and excellent restaurants (Italian, Mexican, Steak House, etc.) as well as lots of fun specialty shops. Makwao is centrally placed, and great for getting to Hana and the "seven sacred pools."
The apartment is roughly 500 square feet, with tub and shower. Separate entrances. Free parking. Free wireless internet and use of washer/dryer. Kitchenette with microwave, coffee maker, hot plate, frig. A small private courtyard to have your morning coffee. I live in the main part of the house, and am available for questions or concerns. A totally silent black lab named Sasha lives in a separate yard, and she is totally available for play dates for those suffering from dog deprivation.
Roomy and clean apartment. We loved being in the country away from the tourist. Karl was a wonderful host. Flowers and a pineapple awaiting us when we arrived. Great place for a couple or single to stay in Maui. Room enough to do a little yoga in the mornings.
Karl's apartment was centrally located and exactly as described! The place was clean, spacious and comfy! I would highly recommend staying at Karl's place if you ever visit Maui.
We had a great stay with Karl & Rosa, and their sweet dog Sasha. They were thoughtful and provided fresh fruit upon arrival, let us use the washer and dryer as needed, and gave us a stack of DVDs when we wanted to watch something on TV. The apartment has pretty much everything you need and is convenient to a lot of different areas on the island. It's not the touristy beachfront resort area, if that's what you're looking for, but has a quiet laid-back and local feel within walking distance to the shops and restaurants in Macawao.
A very nice place to explore Maui. As it lies in the valley between the east and the west-side of the Island, ways are short. The village makawo is nice as well.
The Place: You will be staying in an apartment connected to the main house. The apartment is quite cozy and has a very comfortable bed. Karl has a stocked library if you need some beach reading.
The Location: I would (website hidden) Map it, but Makawao is located in the center of the island. While it is a bit of drive to get to the beaches on the west side, if you plan to explore the whole island (which we did and you should do) it is perfect. You cut an hour or two off your Road to Hana drive and likewise the drive to the top of Haleakala.
The Host: Karl is extremely hospitable and responsive to emails. He answered all my email within the hour. He also made us feel very welcome with fresh pineapple on the table and fresh drinks in the fridge when we arrived. We had an issue with the blinds, and he came by to fix the problem immediately. We could not of had a more positive experience with Karl.
Karl met us as we came in during the evening. The apartment is a wonderful place to stay, especially since Makawao is a very central location - not far from any attraction (except for the tourist coast of Lahaina). A very short trip to Pa'ia (which we found to be wonderful) and a great starting point for the road to Hana. Karl was very friendly and helpful and even gave us a gift from the farmer's market one morning! We used his washer and dryer and met his dog and had a fantastic time on Maui, that was regrettably far too short. Hope to return soon.
A nice apartment which is almost exactly as the pictures. The only difference is an approvement in the kitchen, now equipped with both hot plate and a bigger coffee maker.
The description of the way was really helpful, we got to the right adress directly with a manual GPS (map).
Both Karl and Sasha are really nice hosts. Sasha is a suprisingly quiet (and friendly) dog and the roosters in the neigborhood wasn't a problem at all.
Thank you so much for the snorkeling spot tip and for the music! We really enjoyed our stay on Maui (a perfect feature is the library with, for instance, a Maui revealed book).
Mahalo and aloha,
Erica and Markus
Our stay at Karl's place was wonderful. Don't expect the hustle and bustle of the resorts in Kaanapali. Do expect to to be awaken by the roosters & chill if you sleep with the windows (website hidden) was nice to see how the locals live. The restraunts in town were good. Costco, the airport, and beach were all within 1/2 hour. Karl was a very kind man and shared my family and I a true aloha experience. Sasha the dog was very friendly. I would recommend the apt. and would stay there again. It was very clean & spacious. Thanks Karl for your hospitality.
My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time staying in Karl's apartment. It was clean, and had the amenities we needed (bathroom, fridge, hot plate/cooking utensils, etc.). Karl was an exceptional host. Incredibly attentive, he was always providing great suggestions on where to go, and quick to provide an item or two that we forgot to pack (like warm clothing to visit Haleakala!).
For anyone who truly wants to get away, and doesn't mind driving about 30-50 min. to get to some of the better known beaches, I would highly recommend this unit. The town of Makawao was a just our speed. By the time we finally visited Lahaina, the shops, crowds, and tourist traps were a complete culture shock to us.
Perfect size and location for myself and my two kids. Within walking distance to town. Rained about half of our stay, but just drove to other parts of the island to enjoy the sun. Karl was extremely helpful and friendly.
