About this listing
Perched on a hilltop with a magnificent 360 degree vista of the Pacific Ocean, Catalina, Santa Barbara Island and the Santa Monica Mountains, spend the evening watching the sunset over Boney Mountain as it fades to black. The stars come out by the millions- and you watch for comets and satellites passing overhead from the comfy Adirondack chairs.
You retire to the comfortable restored interior of 'THE ALUMILODGE'- a 1957 AIRSTREAM 22 ft. FLYING CLOUD, and plug your iPod into the Bose Acoustimas sound system while opening a chilled bottle of local area wine you brought from the refrigerator. The dinette is set for a romantic dinner which you prepare in the onboard galley and gas stove. After another look at the Milky Way, you retire to the Queen size rear bed with quality linens and feather duvet- the fresh Pacific breeze lulling you to sleep in the silence broken only by the occasional owl 'hoot' or coyote howl in the distance. You awake to experience the sunrise with our French coffee press and another day in a paradise you can't imagine is so close, yet so far from Los Angeles.
The area also offers vineyard tours, wine tasting rooms, excellent restaurants, hiking/ biking the Backbone Trail, trail rides and even an 18 hole golf course all within minutes.
Pool (seasonally) and internet hot spot available to guests.

It is a privilege to stay on this beautiful property. If you like the outdoors and communing with nature it does not get much better than this absolutely stunning view. As someone who has lived in the middle of Hollywood for the past 15 years I have studied the history of Southern California and often fantasized I could go back in time to an era before it was over developed. I had that sense of "stepping back in time" on the edge of this mountain when looking down on the raw sun drenched ridges as they roll into the ocean. It is beautiful. August is hot during the day but the beach is only a short drive down the mountain and that is where you will want to spend time from 10 AM - 5 PM. Later in the afternoon you may cool off in the beautiful property pool. Head back to camp round 7 PM to be greeted by cool ocean breezes and breathtaking sky. You will find it a hard place to leave but this rejuvenating experience will live on long in your heart and mind.
We had a brilliant time at Murray and Kay's airstream. Our favourite part of the trip was sitting out from evening through sunset until the stars came out. We loved the back to basics feel of staying in the airstream, it's very remote and definitely off the grid. If you love nature, scenery and escapism you'll feel at peace in the airstream. Murray was the perfect host; very helpful, calm and even gave us the chance to see our first rattlesnake... Which had escaped by the time we got to see it! :) Murray gave us lot's of tips and information about local nature and environment. We will definitely return on our next trip to California.
Murray was there to meet us along with the dogs, goats, and horses.
He led us up to our perch on the hilltop just in time for sunset.
Beautiful. We opted to eat at The Old Place on Mulholland Hwy for brunch the next day and went wine tasting. We had no idea these vineyards were even here. Once you are at the Airstream it is hard to leave but I would recommend two nights at least to wind down and just hang there. The view never ends and you feel truly alone. It is homey and casual and has some supplies, dishes, etc. And you can cook on the gas stove and manage despite not having electrical outlets. This is not fancy. If you want to stay in a restored Airstream you have to go with the construction and amenities of the period in which it was built. The setting is priceless and the accommodations cozy. And the ocean is only 15 minutes away.
This is the right way to stay in Malibu. Murray was very nice and showed us the ropes of the Airstream. Everything was perfect and exactly up to description. The night hike and stargazing were the favorite parts of our night.
We celebrated our 7th Anniversary and it could not have been more perfect. The stars, the weather, the darling Vintage Airstream was perfect! Host Murray was wonderful. We will be back!
I don't recommend the place for anyone who does not tolerate heat well. We stayed here in mid august and it was 110-120F during the day and 90F at night in the trailer. With no AC, it was not a pleasant experience. The view was great and the owner was accommodating.
Murray does a really nice job of setting up the Airstream, it is homey and welcoming. The stars are beautiful at night and the quiet is a welcome change from the city. We stayed during a very warm weekend, so I could imagine it being more comfortable during cooler days, but overall a neat and memorable experience.

About the Host, Murray & Kay
My wife and I are Christian, semi-retired film industry people who thrive on adventure and meeting interesting people. Over the past 13 years I've restored several vintage Airstream trailers and consider them the ultimate in camping comfort. One of my restorations now actually resides in Japan!
We used to love to travel and camp in our 1957 'FLYING CLOUD' AIRSTREAM but now enjoy allowing others to share the experience without the hassle of driving, towing and fighting for a spot in a crowded and noisy campground. We live on a 20+ acre ranch property (with some overly friendly goats, dogs and horses) in the Santa Monica Mountains- surrounded by thousands of acres of open space and direct access to the famous Backbone Trail, which is renowned for hiking, horseback and mountain bike riding. We are also only 6 miles from the glorious beaches of Malibu. Our hilltop location is the perfect deluxe camping experience, with ocean views, and base to enjoy this unique mountain range and Mediterranean climate which occurs in only 6 places in the world.
