We had a great time. Harrison gives the best tours. The house was perfect and we really want to go back. This was the beat part of our vacation and a awesome experience.
First of all, I must say Sunny Gables Estate was full of adventure, mystery, interesting influences and decor of old-world styles and architecture from Europe. Also, we felt like we were walking back in history, sandwiched between the giddy 1920's to post-WW II era of opulence for few that could afford the "High Society" lifestyle, and it evokes many of your senses! The property needs a lot of work, but it's a wonderful property to let your imagination run wild! Upon arrival, we were greeted by Darlena, and she was friendly. My daughters and I arrived on a Saturday, late-afternnon to this old-world Vintage Estate. Darlena gave us instructions where to park, a very quick overview, and then she showed us to the room we had reserved. Darlena mentioned that Sherry's son, Harrison might be able to give us a tour, but unfortunately we never saw him! We would have enjoyed hearing about their knowledge of historical facts & stories about the Estate from Sherry, and/or her family. I saw Sherry only from a distance. She had a harp next to her, which is a nice memory. We had an event to attend, so we all regretted not having more time to tour and appreciate the entire Estate. Sunny Gables is a landmark estate that was built in 1930, by Robert T. Moore, an ornithologist who kept all kinds of exotic birds on the property. I never got this fact confirmed with Sherry, but this is what I researched on my own. In 2001, in was purchased by a famous horse racing Hall Of Fame jockey, Kent Desormeaux and his wife. Learning some history and stories always adds for me more interest and charm! Overall, it was full of adventure, interesting, historical, old-world flair, and mysterious! There was too much dust in our room! The ceiling fan above our bed was covered with at least a 1/4" of dust, so I didn't dare turn it on. For my two daughters of the younger generation it was not something they noticed, but for me it was a concern for my asthma. The bathroom decor was beautiful, but the shower glass door and floor inside needed to be cleaned better for my standards. We did not take showers for this reason. Highlight for us were the beautiful music playing in the morning as we packed, which I think it was Sherry playing the piano. A black and white cat came to our door in the middle of the night, so we enjoyed the visit, since we love animals! We really loved the old-world decor from gold decorative moldings, paintings, ornate fabrics, and a mysterious charm about this Vintage Estate! A frozen in time old gem!
We enjoyed our stay overall. The hosts were very welcoming, we felt like we had a lot of privacy, and the bed was very comfortable in the fireplace suite!
Hanging out on the patio in the evening with the nice lights, umbrellas, and furniture was a lot of fun. We made ourselves a nice drink in the lovely bar area they had.
Overall the house was a bit dusty, but I imagine that is partially to be expected with such a large place. We did get a great tour of the mansion from the young man who lives there who knew a lot of interesting facts about the house.
It was a very interesting experience.
I could not have had asked for a better place to stay the night before my wedding. This location is close the La Canada Flintridge Country Club. It was so convenient at one O'Clock in the morning instead of driving all the way home.
The property is magical. Darlena, Sherry and the family were most delightful. We stayed in the Fireplace Suite and it was the perfect backdrop for my Getting-Ready photos with my bridesmaids. The king size bed was comfortable and warm on the only 2 cold nights in April.
I highly recommend staying here.
We had a very nice stay with good hospitality and atmosphere! I can highly recommend the place which will give you a great LA experience!
I recommend this place. Amazing spot in LA like a castle!!! Wonderful experience.
Fabulous trip and precisely what I was looking for ...... 2 blocks from the kids and grandkids. Could not have been more convenient.
