The Neighborhood

Trasimeno Lake - between islands and hills
Trasimeno Lake, the largest body of water in Central Italy and the fourth largest in the country, is a calm and relaxing getaway in the picturesque Umbrian countryside. The soft colours and contours of the surrounding hills evoke the most famous backgrounds of frescos created by the artist Perugino. The heart-shaped lake, with a circumference of 45 km and a depth not more than 6 metres offers visitors the choice of taking enjoyable walks through towns such as Tuoro, Passignano and Castiglione del Lago or making relaxing visits to islands that emerge softly from the waters of the lake. The three islands (Maggiore, Minore and Polvese) can be reached by public boat service or by private boats or speedboats available for hire
CASTEL RIGONE:
This picturesque village is situated in a fabulous panoramic location on the lake. Known for its terracotta dishes glazed in the traditional local style, Castel Rigone is home to a castle rebuilt in 1297 and the elegant church Madonna dei Miracoli (Madonna of the Miracles), one of the most important Renaissance architectural monuments in Umbria. One can venture out of the village on horseback, mountain bike or even on foot through the forests and surrounding olive groves, nestled in an uncontaminated environment that is rich with typical flora and Mediterranean fauna.

Small historic towns and their cultures
The entire perimeter of the lake is home to numerous interesting small towns worth visiting for both their historical and cultural heritage. They can be easily visited on a day trip thanks to their close proximity to one another. The town of Tuoro, known for the infamous battle between Hannibal's Carthaginian army and the Roman army of Caio Flaminio, Passignano with its Medieval walls, Magione and the Castello dei Cavalieri di Malta (Castle of the Knights of Malta), Panicale with its ancient Medieval castle that holds a vast number of paintings from the XIV and XV century and the Castiglione del Lago historical residence of the Della Corgna family. This itinerary allows the visitor to rediscover the antique traces of the past together with places that are still genuinely and authentically tied to rural life.

  • Very nice and big apartment with a swimming pool in a small village on top of a hill overlooking Lago Trasimeno. The apartment has everything you need. No air condition, but a nice cool breeze in the evening. The small village has a supermarket, small bars and restaurants. The owners, Berni and Manuella, are very nice and helpful. They were always around when you needed them. Good experience and highly recommended!

  • Our La Morosa stay was much more than we could have hoped for.
We had wanted something typically Italian, with a cultural, traditional environment, that was also within walking distance to restaurants and small bars that also boasted a relaxing garden and pool. La Morosa certainly has all of those things and many lovely surprises in store, inc a home cooked fresh pie and fantastic recommendations of places to visit and eat at.

The apartment was perfect for the two of us. It was comfortable, cosy, tidy and decorated in a unique way, inc a fantastic mural on the bedroom wall of the view of the lake from the window. We were able to cook our own meals when we wanted to, and even enjoy them in the fabulous garden with a superb view of the Umbrian landscape and rolling hills. It was as if it was our own private garden. The other 4 apartments are sensibly placed so privacy is kept.

The medieval castle village was beautiful and perfect for hillwalking, and enjoying quiet days. The drive to the village is picturesque and winds around these beautiful landscapes, getting you higher and higher above the lake. I would definitely recommend hiring a car (done very cheaply) as it guarantees great day trips and adventures with stunning views.

Passignano nearby is a bigger town, if you want a bit more hustle and bustle, and it sits right on the lake, where you can get ferrys to the Islands. Italy's greatest cities are within driving distance inc Rome (where we drove from), Florence, Assisi and Perugia. There are fantastic wineries to visit, I would highly recommend visiting Montefalco if you are a wine fanatic.

Berni and Manuela were fantastic hosts. They make the perfect team providing warmth and guidance if you want it. They tend to the fabulous garden every day and so are always around if you want to know anything at all. Many of our favourite visits on the holiday were recommendations from Berni.

Whilst we were there a Danish family were staying too, to which La Morosa seemed to be perfect for too.

All in all we really loved our stay which was better than we had hoped for and was a great place to base ourselves, and to have a variety of varying adventures and indulgences.

Particular Favourite:sitting in the hot tub sipping Aperol Spritz whilst an epic Italian lighting storm cascaded above.
