Description

The space

Located in the historic Locust Grove neighborhood in Downtown Charlottesville, this is a two bedroom two and half bath brand new yet quaint two story house. Plenty of natural light and modern conveniences filled with eclectic furniture and vintage accessories. Please note, two shorthair cats also live here and will most likely be here provided you are willing to feed and love. Not a cat person? Ask us about arrangements, but highly allergic people or non-cat people probably should not read further. My boyfriend's dog also lives with us part-time, but will not be there when you are.

Master bedroom with queen size bed (2) with organic mattress, master bath with double vanity, recliner retro chair and walk in closet. (Hosts live here full-time, so there will be limited room to unpack. Guests are welcome to use the closet to hang things, but do not expect to be able to use drawers, etc.)

Second guest room is on the second floor with a comfortable queen size bed (2), a cozy reading area and closet along with a Jack and Jill bathroom with two vanities and a full size tub/shower. The landing is also a nice area to enjoy and spread out into and it has a zen sleeper/sofa. (message me if you have the need to sleep a kid or two, as this might accommodate); there is no door as it is at the top of the stairs so not its own room or as private. Feel free to use the dresser to unpack some in the guest room or hang things in the closet.

The living/dining is in the main area upon entry into the house set up as an open layout style. There is a nice dining table that accommodates four or more with provided leaves; amenities include a 32 inch HDTV, DVD player, several stereos plus turntable with vinyl records available, fully equipped kitchen with blender, juicer, toaster, range/microwave, french press (or coffee maker available upon request) as well as tea accessories, stainless steel refrigerator with water filter system. Free wi-fi (see house info for more on logging in) washer/dryer, gas fireplace, ceiling fans in all rooms, central air, artfully decorated, top down/bottom up blinds, large back deck with outdoor seating and grill, front porch with table and chairs and wicker chair. Clean sheets and towels provided, free parking for several cars. Park either in the driveway, parallel to the house on the street, or on the St. Clair side in the grassy area parallel to the side of the house. Close to Charlottesville's historic Downtown Mall & Belmont area via car (2-3 minutes/2 miles), walking or biking distance too if you have more time, or there is a bus stop 2 blocks from house. Less than 3 miles to UVA Grounds and Monticello is less than 5 miles away--about 10 minutes by car. Perfect place for short-term stay with access to C-ville happenings and restaurants downtown, to UVA or a quick ride to the interstate. Location is ideal as its close to downtown without the hustle and bustle. And for those that enjoy nature, there is a section of the Rivanna trail just a block away to hop onto that follows the river and is an easy and peaceful walk in either direction. Please contact me with any questions. No smoking inside and no pets allowed. Again, we do have two short-haired lovable indoor cats. If willing, you can love and feed them or arrangements may possibly be made. Must not be allowed outside and guests need to be vigilant with the door not being left open so the cats will not escape.

We also offer the option of sharing the house and renting just the guest room for 1-2 people. This means sharing the kitchen, bathroom and common areas with me and my boyfriend, Judd as well during the stay. If interested in such an arrangement, please send me a message to learn more about this option.

And lastly, if you are a bigger group and wish to try to book other places in the neighborhood so you can stay close to each other, both of my direct neighbors who are wonderful also rent on Airbnb and can host 1-2 more people. Here are those links:

Please tell them I sent you if you do contact them!

Guest access

laundry, outdoor grill/deck, front porch, wifi/parking out front on the street and/or parallel to the side of the house in the grass.

Interaction with guests

depends...not so much if i have to leave the key, but prefer to meet whenever possible. when renting the whole house, i will not be present (but my cats will typically).

The neighborhood

easy access to walking trails as well as walking to downtown; quiet area at the end of a street with friendly neighbors. Locust Grove has recently been voted one of the most healthy neighborhoods in America! our place is just a few years old, amidst several older homes, in an eclectic area of Locust Grove.

Getting around

bus stop 2 blocks away/riding bikes/walking; downtown is 4 minutes by car, 10 minutes by bike and 25-30 minutes by foot. Uber is a great way to get around if you plan to visit breweries and wineries or check out

Other things to note

must realize my two sweet cats will most likely stay on the premises, assuming you are not allergic and don't mind feeding and caring for them. they are also strictly indoor only cats and have free reign of the house. they are not shy and love people. iggy is the white cat who is deaf, so sometimes he makes funny sounds as he cannot hear himself. monkey is the black cat and is super friendly and likes to be around you. despite my diligent cleaning, while you are here, you will probably encounter some cat hair/dust, so if you are not okay with that, please keep looking. my boyfriend's dog lives here part-time, but would not be there during your stay. typical check in time is 3PM, but inquire if you would like to check in a little earlier. no guarantees but will consider those requests on a case-by-case basis.

House Rules

No pets please and no smoking inside. Guests may smoke on the porch and use ashtray provided, (do not throw butts out onto the sidewalk or yard). Full use of the backyard is allowed, but no huge parties. If you use the grill, clean it. There is a $100 fee for smoking in the apartment, and $50 in cash for lost keys. If you desire an immersive cat experience in a transitional neighborhood and are artsy and alternative, this is the place for you. Although we never felt unsafe , we were surprised at the condition of some of the surrounding homes. For example , there is a dilapidated panel truck across the street that was an eye-sore. Cary's house is new and beautiful with a spacious living room, a modern kitchen and 2 bedrooms. The back deck is beautiful with a grill and fire pit.

Cary was a very gracious host. She was very clear and straight forward about the cats. It was a little more disruptive than i thought it was going to be but that's because i dont have cats. If you have cats and know what to expect the location is not to be beat, the house is great and Cary is a great host!

Cary's house is absolutely beautiful. Everywhere you look you notice something cute and unique. Without seeing her artwork it is obvious that she is a great artist by the vision she has to decorate her house. We were able to meet her as we were coming and she was leaving and she is lovely. Very easy to communicate with and when asked, gave us great recommendations for places to go in the area. Two things to keep in mind...you really need to like cats. They are not shy and will join you in bed, on the couch, etc. Also, because she lives there, there is limited space for your stuff (no drawers, table tops, closet space). We would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to any cat lover!!

Response from Cary & Judd:
Hey Echo - I appreciate your saying so. It's true, as this is our primary residence, for short weekend stays, we don't typically empty drawers or closets to accommodate guests in that way. The guest room definitely has closet and drawer space in the dresser though. I don't want to set up false expectations though, so I have amended both of my listing descriptions to reflect those things and thanks for pointing it out. People staying definitely need to be cat people for sure and hopefully that's understood as well from our detailed description.

We had a great and easy experience staying here. Very roomy and perfect for our foursome weekend in Charlottesville. Cary makes it easy to get into the home and provides detailed instructions on the cats and amenities so nothing was vague, in a great way.

The house is unbelievably charming and in a convenient-yet-quiet location, and Cary is one of the most thoughtful AirBnB hosts I've coordinated with. We had a little bit of trouble with one of the cats and some late-night howling, but having had multiple friends who have stayed in this rental, and with the cats, without any incident, it did seem to be a one-off issue (maybe a full moon or something?) rather than a consistent problem. I might suggest that it's a better location for guests more positively inclined towards felines than guests who aren't cat-lovers, since the kitties are definitely part of the deal. But the house is really a special place (especially the back deck with the inviting seating and fire pit), and Cary couldn't have done more to make us feel comfortable and to address issues when they did arise.

Response from Cary & Judd:
Hey Katie - You and your friends were super respectful of our home and things and awesome guests in general. We appreciate your taking good care of Iggy and Monkey and my apologies again for the one-off issue with Iggy as well. Let's chalk it up to a full-moon, or something! ;) Anyway, all the best to you and glad your stay was pleasant otherwise. Take care, Cary & Judd

Cary was a fabulous host! She left a personal welcome for our family, who was staying there during our daughter's wedding. Our stay could not have been better. The home was warm and inviting, beautifully decorated, and cozy. She thought of everything, so many nice touches at our fingertips! We appreciated the instructions she left, and the ease of finding whatever we needed while there. It's easy to tell that she and Judd have placed a high priority of making their guests feel at home and welcome. The back deck was so nice, and home is situated in a very nice neighborhood! Cary was easy to work with, making special arrangements for our particular wedding requests. The beds were comfortable, the house was immaculate; we wanted for nothing. When we had a question, she was available and prompt with an answer. We would love to stay with them again when visiting Charlottesville! Having their nice home as a local gathering place made all the difference for our family, who had all traveled to attend the wedding!

We had a wonderful weekend at Cary's house. The house was comfortable and inviting. Cary did a great job of providing instructions and making us feel welcome. The house was only a short drive to downtown and campus. It had everything we needed. Would definitely recommend it !!

I am an artist/photographer and an adventurer at heart (who doesn't get to travel nearly enough as I'd like). When traveling to new places, I love to live like a local--shop for food, cook, explore cafes and restaurants, and stray from the beaten path. When home, I'm a passionate cook, a lover of things green, a yogi, and an aspiring harmonica player. I live as sustainably as I can (also now with my boyfriend Judd), play with my two cats as often as I can, meditate when I can, and laugh a lot.
