About this listing
Havas Haz is a sweet little mid century house located right next door to its big brother Arts and Crafts neighbor, Hobbit House. Havas Haz or Snowy Cottage in Hungarian was named in deference to the Hungarian-American fireman and his wife who built it in 1950. It is furnished in a clean lean somewhat tongue-in-cheek retro manner with hardwood floors and original local art. The garage has been restored to its original Dutch Lap wooden siding and the yard entirely relandscaped. The operative descriptors are peaceful, light-filled (even in overcast South Bend winters), intelligent and whimsical.
Havas is across the street from a bus stop to downtown and an easy bike ride along the River Walk to Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College. It is also in close proximity to the airport and South Shore train/Coach bus line to Chicago.
Owner/host has lived in South Bend for over fifteen years and is full of ideas and suggestions about where to eat, shop and go in the greater area including the lovely shore towns along Lake Michigan some of which are only a half an hour away.
Interaction with guests
I will interact with guest to the degree they do or do not want. I will drive them to locations if they like, advise them on local restaurants and shopping, again if they like, or leave them entirely alone.
I ask guests to please smoke outside if they smoke although I think this request pretty much comes with Air BnB territory. The same is true for cleanliness and conscientiousness. They make all the difference when it comes to the little house earning its keep and my enjoyment in being a host. I fully expect normal changing of sheets and general tidying up but if a full day or more of cleaning up dishes, food and more is required it cuts severely into my margins which I try hard to keep fair. Thank you so much.

Once upon a time my then young son described me as a "consummate citizen" and I happen to like that as the thread that ties it all together. For years I have participated in and cared about neighborhood and community wherever I have lived----Colorado, New England, Indiana. Regarding the picture that's Daria, my last great full time tenant, on the left with me, Sidney, on the right. Daria's husband Frank took the picture last summer just before they took off for a new job at Providence College. To allay my sadness at losing "the best neighbors ever" I decided to try offering my little house on Air B&B for short term rentals. To that end I painted almost the entire interior and furnished the whole house from top to bottom. I think it's been a big success and hope my guests will too. I look forward to meeting new people!
