About This Listing
Havas Haz is a sweet little mid century house located right next door to its big brother Arts and Crafts neighbor, Hobbit House. Havas Haz or Snowy Cottage in Hungarian was named in deference to the Hungarian-American fireman and his wife who built it in 1950. It is furnished in a clean lean somewhat tongue-in-cheek retro manner with hardwood floors and original local art. The garage has been restored to its original Dutch Lap wooden siding and the yard entirely relandscaped. The operative descriptors are peaceful, light-filled (even in overcast South Bend winters), intelligent and whimsical.
Havas is across the street from a bus stop to downtown and an easy bike ride along the River Walk to Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College. It is also in close proximity to the airport and South Shore train/Coach bus line to Chicago.
Owner/host has lived in South Bend for over fifteen years and is full of ideas and suggestions about where to eat, shop and go in the greater area including the lovely shore towns along Lake Michigan some of which are only a half an hour away.
Interaction with Guests
I will interact with guest to the degree they do or do not want. I will drive them to locations if they like, advise them on local restaurants and shopping, again if they like, or leave them entirely alone.
The best thing about my neighborhood in the River Walk--a walking/biking trail along the St.Joseph river. Technically one can walk or bike all the way to Notre Dame albeit it is about 3.5 miles.
If I'm available, I'm wiling to drive football guests up to campus and drop them off.
I ask guests to please smoke outside if they smoke although I think this request pretty much comes with Air BnB territory. The same is true for cleanliness and conscientiousness. They make all the difference when it comes to the little house earning its keep and my enjoyment in being a host. I fully expect normal changing of sheets and general tidying up but if a full day or more of cleaning up dishes, food and more is required it cuts severely into my margins which I try hard to keep fair. Thank you so much.
We just left Havas Haz and had a wonderful visit in South Bend. The football game was a lot of fun but I have to say meeting Sidney and staying here was just as wonderful! The pictures show the house just as it is. It is spotless and very quaint! If we ever make it back up here again, we will definitely stay here again! Thanks Sidney!
We loved staying at Havas Haz! 3 of of stayed in the house for a quick night and Sidney was more than accommodating. We appreciated the 3 beds and had plenty of space for all of us to be comfortable for the evening. The place was clean and she had coffee and tea available for the morning. The neighborhood is adorable and we really enjoyed all the architecture in that area of town. The morning of checkout, Sidney met us and dropped us off on campus as she mentions in her review. We were easily able to get a cab back and saved money and sanity by not parking on campus on a game day! I hope we can come back again the next time we're in South Bend! Finally, communication was great!
Our stay was fantastic! Sidney was such a wonderful hostess. The house was perfect for us. She was great at communicating from start to finish. I would most definitely want to stay there again upon my return for a Notre Dame football game. Many thanks!
Our host Sidney was great. The home we rented was clean and as advertised. The neighborhood was nice, We had a great time and recommend to anyone going to South Bend.
We enjoyed our stay at Sidney's house. The house became a great place to relax, which was a good contrast to the busy Notre Dame football weekend schedule. Checkin was very easy and Sidney was flexible with our arrival time. When we entered the cute little white house we were pleasantly surprised that everything was as pictured in the photos and much more spacious than we had thought it would be.
There were only two of us staying but the house could easily accommodate 4 or maybe 5 people. It was very clean and Sidney provided all the essentials for a home away from home. I even found an umbrella which was useful for the wet weekend. We cooked a few times and had some great coffee in a coffee press that was provided by Sidney. She was also thoughtful and left a few biscotti's. The bed and the bedding were very comfortable. We spent a lot of time in bed watching Netflix, keeping toasty and listening to the rain. The quiet neighborhood was not far from campus and located near many amenities. The only noise was the rain which made the road a little noisy and there were a few planes that flew overhead, but we were still able to sleep peacefully.
I only talked to Sidney briefly at the beginning of the weekend. She seemed very friendly and was respectful of our privacy. At the end of the weekend, Sidney could not be there for our checkout but she made it simple. This was my first airbnb experience and if they all turn out the way it was at Sidney's, I look forward to my next trip. I would definitely recommend the Havas Haz and would stay here again.
About the Host, Sidney
Once upon a time my then young son described me as a "consummate citizen" and I happen to like that as the thread that ties it all together. For years I have participated in and cared about neighborhood and community wherever I have lived----Colorado, New England, Indiana. Regarding the picture that's Daria, my last great full time tenant, on the left with me, Sidney, on the right. Daria's husband Frank took the picture last summer just before they took off for a new job at Providence College. To allay my sadness at losing "the best neighbors ever" I decided to try offering my little house on Air B&B for short term rentals. To that end I painted almost the entire interior and furnished the whole house from top to bottom. I think it's been a big success and hope my guests will too. I look forward to meeting new people!
