About This Listing
Classy, private studio with a unique, vintage feel, celebrating the city that Bombay was - and now, right in the heart of Mumbai's most convenient central suburb!
A 250 sq foot private, independent, air-conditioned studio with full breadth windows overlooking palm tree-tops and open spaces
OLDE BOMBAY is an elegant, self-contained, retro designer studio in Chembur. It has air-conditioning, wi-fi, secure wardrobes, a drop-down dining table/desk, two comfortable cup chairs, coffee table, bedside table, console and the biggest (king-size) bed you will find on airbnb in Mumbai! Most of the furniture in this studio is vintage, pretty priceless and much-loved :-) This unique studio has its own entryway, attached bath with hot water, and fully equipped kitchenette with fridge, single gas stove-top, microwave, hot water kettle, cookware and diningware. Tea, coffee, milk powder, biscuits/crackers and toiletries form the welcome package.
Guests have independent use of the Bombay studio. They are also welcome to hang out on the upper floor balcony for chai, a smoke, or a chat - or on the spacious rooftop terrace with its organic veggie garden. Accompanying kids can also use the family-owned front lawn, swing and climbing frame - a rarity in space-starved Mumbai....
Interaction with Guests
When I'm not traveling myself, I would be there to meet you and introduce you to Mumbai - the magnificent and sometimes exasperating city that I call home! I have enjoyed the company of many of my guests and like to host decent, interesting folks who know how to enjoy the good life. If I am not there, be sure that I will have a very reliable and friendly person to host you in my place – and will be in email contact throughout.
This is a safe and convenient neighborhood with nearly 15 banks and ATMs on our street alone. For some reason several spas have come up - there are 3 within a two minute walk away. Besides banks and spas, we've got a Costa Coffee across the street, a Barista's down the street, and very good restaurants (North Indian, South Indian, Coastal and Continental), a new wine lounge and lots of shopping options nearby.
There are autorickshaws outside the gate, a taxi stand and bus stop opposite the house, and train station seven minutes walk away. A new road connects Chembur to South Mumbai by elevated freeway to get you there in 15 minutes. A new monorail goes to Central Mumbai, and will soon touch South Mumbai. The city's first metro now links Chembur to the western suburbs…and there’s more to come as this new city centre is very well connected for access to all parts of the metropolitan area.
Other Things to Note
*** I have two suites and three studios in Chembur. If this one is reserved, please check for availability in the others…....
Dining-in – There are lots of dining options and I encourage you to eat out and try India’s varied and wonderful cuisines. If however you are at least two guests in your party and prefer home-cooked meals, I can hire a cook to make your meals at a nominal cost.
Airport Pickup/Dropoff – If you are familiar with the city and its interesting taxi drivers, I recommend you refer to the detailed house directions on your reservation to get here on your own. However, if this is your first time in Mumbai and/or you are arriving at night and/or you do not speak the local language, and especially if you are a single woman, please use our airport pick up service. For a reasonable $30 charge to cover our time and travel costs, you will be met by a reliable friend of mine who will bring you directly to your suite by ac taxi, saving all of us a whole lot of stress. I cannot tell you how many times I have received frantic calls from guests who land up jet-lagged at the airport at 3 am to realize that there are no GPS-enabled taxis in Mumbai, the taxi drivers do not speak English and can be very rude, and that they are well and truly lost in the middle of the night (A useful tip: In India we use landmarks and directions from locals, not maps, to find our way.)
Other Services - We have folks on call who provide Ayurvedic massages, Mehendi Applications, Beauty Treatments, and Indian Cooking Classes at nominal costs. Also, I stock menus of all the nearby restaurants so you can make yourself cozy at home and just order in!
What's really not done….
Bringing in day/night visitors without letting us know
Using the studio for work/meeting clients etc/any commercial purpose
Engaging in any illegal activity
Leaving an unholy mess behind :-)
Antique bed and table, tile inlay, vintage fittings, and b/w memories of the beauty of olde worlde Bombay
Our stay at Mandy's was unfortunately cut short because of trouble with internet access. First it was a router problem which she had promptly fixed, but then a problem with a local construction project came up that interrupted the Internet and it was out of her control. It was a temporary problem, but since we are two freelancers having WiFi was a necessity for us while traveling. Because of this issue, Mandy suggested we find other accommodations to meet our internet needs, which we did. As with any trip, if you have a specific need, double check with the host beforehand and be clear about a cancellation agreement if you have to leave. Additionally, we were asked to not use the house phone to order food or taxis, so I would recommend getting a local cell phone or SIM card if possible.. Lastly, we were asked to pay extra for using the air conditioning during the day - it would have been helpful if this was laid out in the rental guidelines beforehand.
Besides that, we found the accommodations to be clean and well taken care of and the property beautiful. Mandy handled getting us from the airport which was extremely helpful after our long trip. Filtered water was provided upon request, and the rooms were cleaned regularly. The bed is big and comfortable. The elevator was a relief as well, as it can be tough carrying luggage up and down in the Mumbai heat.
The neighborhood of Chembur was in a good location (easy access to the freeway and downtown and not far from Bandra either) with lots of good local food and shopping, which Mandy recommended. There is a coffee shop right across the street where we got our morning coffee and worked (they had wifi but it was not very dependable or easy to access). We especially loved Hotel Saroj (which is not a hotel but a restaurant) just a block away. The food was amazing there and the owner was very helpful to us as first time visitors to the city. Also Gheeta Bevhan, a little hole in the wall Indian restaurant near by, had delicious food and was very inexpensive - we ate like kings for under $5. There is not a lot of nightlife in Chembur in terms of a variety of things to do, like bars, clubs, movie theaters, but we found more of this downtown and in Bandra.
Erin & Jason, I'm glad that at least some things met your expectations during your stay :-) My apologies for the wifi disruption because of unforeseen road maintenance issues - and even though this was no fault of mine, do acknowledge that I credited you for this inconvenience. I also took the hit of the AC bill myself, when I returned all the money you had paid towards 24/7 use of utilities for your commercial use of my studio. It was nice meeting you, and I wish we had more time to actually get to know each other. I hope you enjoy the rest of your India trip. Good luck and safe travels!
With friend of mine we arrived in Bombay and india for the first time and start coudnt be better. Mandy was so helpful i cannot praise her enough. Her driver friend picked us up from the airport and within 40min we were already lying in bed and resting from the flight. Mandy showed us around and told us everything what we needed to know. To get to central bombay is around 45min on taxi and its around 250r. Room which we stayed was perfect. Very clean. As pictures show all looks like that. Just lovely indeed. And Fridge to keep our beer cold was surely hudge benefit! Anyway i can honestly say Mandy was the best airbnb host ever! Thanks again my friend.
Being my third time here you can understand how much I like it the Room is beautiful great furniture in goan style and hostess is fun and very informativ about Mumbai and the location is good you could REALLY say Its in the middle of Mumbai as far to south as to north, you reach ANY place in an hour or less if Its not to much trafik.the house is VERY well maintained and there s a vegetable garden on the roof and a garden in front of the house.I Highland recomend this place
Amazing location, clean and well kept. A gracious host to compliment the place. Highly recommended.
The studio had everything we needed. Mandy was very helpful and made sure to make our short stay very pleasant. The neighborhood was nice, with good transport connections nearby.
Amazing apartment, fantastic location and warm hospitality. What more can a guest ask for? :)
The location is fairly convenient- 20-30 minutes from the airport, with a lot of amenities in walking distance. And the delightful host is the icing on the cake- one of those rare people with whom you instantly build a rapport with.
Highly recommended, will be dropping in soon :)
A great experience and a perfect introduction to India for me. Mandy is lovely and the room, house and garden are just what I like. Helpful advice on where to go,lots of tea and a balcony to smoke on. Full marks!

About the Host, Mandy
Hi there, I'm Mandy - never-say-die globe trotter and inveterate rolling stone - former journalist, designer, management professional, academic and entrepreneur - to name a few :-) I'm also a greenie, and have a little organic farm on my terrace in Mumbai that keeps me grounded when I'm not traveling! Besides travel, I enjoy the good life, great music, soul-stirring movies, awesome literature and inspiring company - the last item being the reason I've been an airbnb host since 2009 :-)
I have homes in India and the US, so catch me wherever...and know that even if I'm not home when you visit, I'd have a reliable and friendly person hosting for me. My homes are clean, comfortable and conveniently located - five listings in Mumbai (same location - good for group reservations) and two in upstate NY (same location).
IMPORTANT: Please see photos, descriptions, and previous guest reviews before contacting me, to save our time. Also, know that I may simply not respond if:
a) you have a blank profile
b) you seem to be email bombing many hosts to begin a price war
c) you have no introductions, verifications or reviews, are quite mysterious about your purpose of visit, but still want me to rendezvous with you somewhere and take you - a complete and utter stranger - back to my home for a viewing of the room :-)
That having been said, I'm glad to answer GENUINE inquiries from GOOD FOLKS! And if you end up being my guest, will gladly go out of my way to make your stay a GREAT experience :-)
