About this listing
'Chivy Chase' is an original log miners cabin set in the beautiful Australian Bush.
Sit back and listen to the kookaburras and if you are lucky you might spot the resident wombat in the backyard.
The house consists of 2 bedrooms, 2 small sun-rooms, bathroom and the original cabin which has a further 2 beds, kitchenette and living area. There is also a small log cabin out-building called 'Dillie Dorrie' with a double bed which can be used in summer.
The log cabin was built early last century and various rooms have been added over the years, hence its non-conventional layout. The 2nd bedroom has to be entered via the first.
The house is full of rustic charm and it’s a wonderful place for getting back to nature. We have deliberately not put in a phone or internet connection, nor TV reception.
However, there is a small TV with a selection of DVD's and lots of magazines to read.
There is an open fire in the cabin and portable column heaters in the (website hidden) facilities include; very small oven and 2 burner stove, microwave, electric frying pan, slow cooker and sandwich maker.
There is also an outdoor area and BBQ (in shed). It's great to sit out the back and admire the bush and wildlife.
The property is within 10 minutes walk of the famous St Erth gardens and a great base to explore the surrounding areas including Trentham and Daylesford. There are lots of great bush walks nearby.
There are plenty of doonas, blankets and pillows, but please bring your own sheets or sleeping bags, pillow cases, towels and tea towels. There is 1 queen and 3 single beds, plus if needed 2 single beds in the cabin. In summer the double bed in Dillie Dorrie can be used.
We look forward to hearing from you.
The place is snug and works well in winter, huddled around the fire. There are ample cooking utensils and heaps of books and DVDs and the walks near the garden of St. Erth are pretty! If you're entertaining a big crowd, the bbq will work well, aside from this there is an electric two burner stove and composite oven. If you want to cook oven things, I recommend an oval shaped Dutch oven!
This is the second time I have stayed in the cabin and it was just as great as last time. Colin and Joy have decked out the cabin with all sorts of bits and pieces that come in handy, especially in the kitchen and when it comes to keeping warm. They are excellent communicators and ensure that they provide concise information before staying. I'll likely be back again!
Thanks Colin and Joy. I had a great stay in the cabin. It was very warm with the big open fire. Winter shouldn't deter anyone from a trip to Blackwood. The days can be crisp and clear and there are plenty of great walks close by.
Another lovely stay at Chivy! Visited the (very) nearby Garden of St Erth this time round. Nice surprise! Colin and Joy are great and responsive hosts.
A perfect place to stay in this area. Close to some great walks and the house is a unique little bit of fun in itself.
Chivy chase is the cutest little place in the woods. Really character and charm. The five of us had a wonderful stay. The open fire place is amazing. I can see why people want to sleep in that room!!
We loved our two-night stay in the miner's cottage. It was exactly the sort of authentic, no-frills weekender experience we wanted. The old wattle-and-daub cottage is very atmospheric. You can't help but imagine the lives of the tough, hard-working people who sought to make a living from gold mining, all those years ago. Blackwood is a lovely spot and really worth a visit.
