The Space

Our lovely large private Tuscany villa-country house is superbly located in the heart of the famous Chianti countryside on a hill top position with stunning views from every window, terrace, courtyard, pavillion and gardens. We are close to Florence (20 minutes) , Siena (35 minutes) and Tuscany's most famous and beautiful hill top towns.

**Please note*, our villa is private, you do not share our private gardens and relaxation spaces with any other guests. There are many cheaper accommodations listed on Airbnb where you only get an apartment in a shared complex. **

Our 500 year old stone country house-villa (230 square meters or 2, 475 square foot) and has been lovingly and completely restored to the highest standards and in keeping with the beautiful Tuscan aesthetic.

Our villa is an ideal base to explore Tuscany and Florence as it is superbly located 20 minutes south of Florence (direction Siena) in classic Tuscan Chianti countryside and is surrounded by rolling hills, tree lined valleys, olive groves, vineyards, wine estates, castles and renaissance villas. For wine lovers the house overlooks vineyards and is situated in wine country being close some of Tuscany's best wine estates. For gourmet lovers, nearby are wonderful restaurants and wineries as well as farms that produce delicious Tuscan products such a cheese, olive oil and hams. Close by is the village of San Casciano Val di Pesa which is listed as one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany.

The villa has large spacious bedrooms and living areas, antiques, stone floored bathrooms with high quality fittings, four poster beds and traditional architectural elements including a hand carved large fire place and ancient wooden beamed ceilings as well as a sensitive restoration of original doors and windows.

The villa is on four levels and has traditional terra cotta flooring throughout. The villa comes with fine furnishings and linens as well as antiques and high quality home wares including ceramics, cutlery and all new superb quality European kitchen appliances. It has three large double bedrooms, three bathrooms with the highest quality fittings; two large lounge rooms, (sleeps up to 8) and one large live in kitchen as well as a separate laundry.

Local artisans have hand crafted to order fine furniture and fittings in traditional style including an iron four poster bed and an antique style traditional kitchen dresser. Outdoor areas include a large loggia (traditional covered veranda with oak beams and terra cotta floors) with beautiful views. The loggia has a large new gourmet BBQ as well as a large iron antique table with wooden top (seating 10) with iron patio chairs and out door divan lounge. Off the loggia in front of the house is a large ancient stone court yard, a separate oak beamed pavilion with lounge seats and table with iron balustrade and beautiful views. The courtyard also comes with a medieval stone well and troughs and leads onto a lower court yard and terrace, a forest area with oaks, private gardens and a large above ground pool.

The garden is planted in traditional Tuscan style with olive trees, lavenders, rosemary, traditional old style roses and pomegranates.

All the rooms and gardens have beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside as the villa is situated on a hill and overlooks grand historical estates such as the 1,000 year old Castle of Bibbione, mentioned in Salman Rushdie's latest book 'The Enchantress of Florence'.

We also have an above ground pool with four large reclining teak lounge chairs and bar fridge all set on a hillside with beautiful views.

We can also provide a cooking teacher for learning Tuscan cuisine, a cleaner, a cook and great discounts on wine tours and art tours for Tuscany, Florence, Venice and Rome through Artviva.

  • This was a very beautiful place that felt like living in an interior design magazine. The villa came with a chef that could be hired for a very reasonable rate to cook all three meals if desired. We had one dinner cooked for 5 people and it was spectacular - a private chef in a Tuscan villa - what more can I say. Even though the place seems secluded it is only a 5 minute drive to the town. It was clean, the beds were comfortable and it was well stocked with everything that could be needed. The house is very private and is not shared with anyone. But there is another house very close. The villa has full-time tenant in another section of the but there is no noise or contact with anyone. There is a beautiful view but only from one section of the courtyard. The house itself does not face the view and there is no porch that faces the view. To enjoy the view you must sit in a covered patio off the courtyard. It is a beautiful setting and nothing to complain about. But it is a small letdown when you go into this beautiful villa and realize there are no views from any windows or patios - unless you go out of the house and onto the sitting area across the courtyard. Because of the mosquitos we weren't able to enjoy the view as much as we would have liked. I am sure the house could sleep 10 people fairly comfortably and 3 couples would all have their own rooms and own double beds. This would make the house a bargain. Taking my family there was too expensive for what it offered. But it was a beautiful place and we had a wonderful time.

  • We've always wanted to stay in a Tuscan villa and were so excited to stay in this one! After a few hiccups, we managed to settle in nicely into this homely, cosy villa. Michele the caretaker and in-villa chef cooked the most delicious barbecue meal during our last night here. Having him around was a real blessing as he was always very hospitable and friendly. A very hardworking, honest man he was. We highly recommend this villa if you don't mind it being located deep inside an off the beaten track rough road. Worth the drive though as the view surrounding the villa is breathtaking! There are two bathrooms in the villa, the third one was not used as it was located outside the villa, another floor down. But it wasn't an issue for us as we all used the bathroom at separate times. Kitchen is very well equipped, rooms are large and there was more than enough space to move around for our family of 6 adults and 1 infant. There are good restaurants around but PLEASE rent a car as we doubt public transport is convenient because we didn't see any taxis at all. All in all it was a good family holiday for us.

  • We had an unforgettable week at Poggio Canali. The villa was a home away from - very comfortable and liveable. We were in a group of three couples and a baby and the size was perfect. The kitchen had everything we could need and more. (Except for a microwave, but that was no problem, as Michele cooked for us almost every night!) The beds were very comfortable, with gorgeous views from each bedroom. One has an ensuite with a bath which was perfect for travelling with a baby, but was a little difficult to use as a shower due the handheld shower head and no curtain. The other two bedrooms share bathroom with an enormous double shower. We didn't use the third bathroom as it is separated from the villa by outdoor stairs.

The location of the villa could not be better! Having previously stayed in San Gimignano, and another time near Gaiole in Chianti, this was without doubt the best position in terms of seeing the gorgeous Tuscan countryside, small medieval villages, as well as the big ticket items in Florence and Siena. San Casciano was not an especially memorable town but was very convenient for groceries, pizza, gelato and espresso.

Rose was extremely helpful, right from the time of booking through until after check out. The information and suggestions she provided were invaluable - in particular we are in definite agreement on the "best restaurant in the world" in Rignana! We were most thankful for the provision of a travel cot and linen, and especially for the kind offer of some grocery staples purchased ready for our arrival. So thoughtful! The villa caretaker, Michele, was friendly and obliging. He is a fantastic cook and prepared our dinner (and cleaned up afterwards!) on all but two of our nights. What a treat to spend the day exploring the Tuscan countryside, return to an idyllic villa and enjoy a sunset drink on the terrace, without having to worry about what to cook for dinner! Better yet, relax in front of an open fire while someone else cleans the kitchen afterwards! Again, perfect when travelling with a baby when going out to dinner is not so easy.

Thankyou so much Rose and Michele for a wonderful stay at your beautiful villa.

  • The house is beautiful, better that the pictures and the descriptions! It is very evident how much love and care was put into every detail. We felt right at home. The views are wonderful and the location is great. San Casciano is at the center of the beautiful Chianti region, with great access to all the towns both the ones in the tour guides and those that are not but are just as wonderful.

Everything we dreamed of when we decided to come to Toscana.

We followed most of the careful suggestions to decide on our day trips and they turned out great.

  • Quaint little villa in the Tuscan countryside. Spacious, well stocked with basic amenities. General location is nice with a Coop (grocery store) about a 10 minutes drive away.

At a broader level, this is a great vantage point for traveling all over Tuscany. We covered Pisa, Venice, Siena, San Gimignano and of course Florence from here. Had we chosen to, we could also have covered Milan from here. We found it better to stay put in one place and cover multiple locations than pack and move every other day.

If you choose to stay here, you must have a rented car though. Even then, you need someone to take you there the first time. Once there, you need to store the location on your GPS device for coming back.

  • We can't wait to go back! The villa was exactly as promised. Beautifully appointed, every amenity we could want, gorgeous views and conveniently located. The owners' careful decoration, in keeping with traditional Tuscan style and craftsmanship gave every room a serene and calming effect. Several wonderful restaurants and vineyards were within a 15 min drive. August is very hot, so the children particularly appreciated the pool to cool off in. Mom appreciated the convenient laundry facilities as well as the handy maps and guidebooks supplied. It was all so lovely we often opted to stay home and enjoy the villa rather than sightsee! We were a family of 7 and had plenty of room.

  • This Villa was everything we hoped for in visiting Tuscany. It was off the beaten path, literally about 1km from the street. The house was very spacious, a tremendous location, with easy Autostrada access for day trips south to Siena, north to Bologna...30 min bus ride to heart of Firenze and <10 min to the bus depot by car. The host was super accomodating, we arrived late (10pm) and departed early (6am) and she was there when we arrived and made a special effort to check us out the evening before departure. We were traveling with a 3 year old and she was gracious enough to buy us a few staples before we arrived.

  • This is such a beautiful villa! My family enjoyed a memorable week at Poggio Canali in July 2011. The owners and staff were so gracious and polite. They speak fluent English and offered amazing suggestions for outings in the area. The house is so beautifully decorated and well kept. Each room is gorgeous. There were 2 amazing bathrooms upstairs and the third full bathroom was in the courtyard area. The 4 minute drive down the dirt road to reach the villa was breathtaking and at times, exciting! Be mindful not to have a car that is too low to the ground. The gourmet kitchen and al fresco dining room are superb! The nearby village has great food/wine shops. Don't forget mosquito repellent if you stay during the summer. We hope to return to Poggio Canali again! Grazie mille!

  • I can not express in words how wonderful the house in Tuscany was. Set up on a hill, well off the road, I felt I truly was in Tuscany. The views extraordinary! The accomodations excellent. A week was not enough!
