About This Listing
The cottage overlooks downtown Juneau and is also moments away for some of the best trails in town. A full kitchen, laundry, cable and fast internet give you all the conveniences, and off-street parking makes you the envy of our neighbors.
This two-bedroom, fully furnished and equipped apartment is available year-round. Located in a quiet, historic downtown Juneau neighborhood, it's only minutes walking from downtown shopping, historic gold mines, and boreal rainforest hikes. It offers B&B comfort with vacation rental independence. It's great spot for families and couples traveling together. Because the apartment has a full kitchen and dining room, our guests have the option to "eat in." Guests consistently comment on how comfortable they were during their stay because the apartment is so home-like. A second 2-bedroom apartment is also available at times, allowing for parties of up to 10 people.
You'll have access to all the standard kitchen equipment: pots, pans, toaster, coffee maker, microwave. You'll have cable television as well as a dvd player. You will enjoy your own laundry facility.
Interaction with Guests
I don't live at the cottage, but I am nearby, and almost always available by phone.
While the whole city of Juneau has about 30,000 people, it is squeezed between the mountains and the sea. "Downtown" Juneau, where the apartment is, feels more like a city of 8000 people. It is highly walkable, but expect lots of hills. Some of our streets are actually staircases!
The cottage is about a 5 minute walk from the center of downtown, yet is situated on edge of town overlooking the city. If you have a car, there is off-street parking (very rare in our neighborhood!). If you walk away from town on Basin Road, you will soon be at the trailhead for Perseverance Trail and Mount Roberts Trail, both great hikes.
Other Things to Note
This gets a little complicated: There are actually two apartments, an upstairs and a downstairs. Each have two bedrooms, each has a queen and two twin beds.
When guests make a reservation, they are sent a Guest Responsibilities document. Some general guidelines from the document include: 1) no smoking anywhere on the property (huge fire hazard in an historic neighborhood), 2) no pets are allowed inside the apartment, 3) no events or parties are to be held in the apartment without the owner's permission, 4) and illegal behavior will result in immediate eviction with no refund. These 4 items are not the only requirements, and the Guest Responsibilites must be followed in whole.

The cottage was exactly as described. It was well equipped with necessities for cooking, and most importantly a beautiful view of the mountains. Walking distance to town and several great hiking spots. I would definitely stay here again.
I am happy to join the chorus of praise for the Fiddlehead cottage in Juneau. My two grown sons and I spent three nights there and were quick to feel at home and very reluctant to leave when our stay was done.
From the welcome note on the door, the welcome pot of ham to the perfectly cozy beds and furnishings this cottage is a perfect place to stay and be comfortable. We were in the downstairs unit. No one was in the upstairs unit for two days and on our last night we finally heard some travel above but it wasn't bad.
I recommend this place heartily.
This 2 bedroom apartment is an excellent base for a family or 2 couples traveling together. Walking distance to downtown and easy access to hiking trails. Melissa was very helpful with her instructions ( eg., be aware of bear). The rooms are spacious and very comfortable.
Rainforest Cottage was the perfect home base for our stay in Juneau. Its location just outside of the downtown area was great. Easy to get into town, but away from the cruise ship scene. We loved people watching from the second floor as folks from town headed toward the trails up the road and walked their pets.
In setting up our trip and reservation, Melissa worked with us to accommodate our schedule. It was tricky since we were going backpacking in the middle of our stay. Initially she was going to store our luggage for us at a very nominal fee, but when the cottage wasn't rented for the two nights we were away, she allowed us to store our belonging in the cottage. What a treat not to have to pack and repack after the backpack!
Melissa also provided us with information about the Juneau area and restaurant recommendations before our arrival. Her directions from the airport to the cottage were spot on. Navigating the curving and steep streets of Juneau can be tricky.
The cottage (Fiddlehead) was more spacious than we thought it would be. We were able to easily accommodate 4 adults and one teen. The kitchen had plenty of space to cook and had all of the basic items that we needed to prepare our meals. Having the washer/dryer in the unit was great. After we arrived, we were missing some kitchen and bath linens. We let Melissa know and she quickly got them to us.
I'd highly recommend Rainforest Cottage to other travelers! It was a pleasure.

About the Host, Melissa
I am an event planner/wedding planner here in Juneau. Managing the Rainforest Cottage keeps me busy in the summer months and combats the rainy blahs the rest of the year. We also have a lot of wedding parties that like to stay with us. When my family travels, we like to stay at vacation rentals too, so we know what your needs are and hope to accomodate them!
