Private, cozy and quiet room in 2 floor apartment in a classic, beautiful New England style two family home. Located in wonderful, artsy neighborhood. Easy access to colleges, downtown by bus, subway, or bike.
Two bedrooms available for rent (Please note that each room is rented separately). Each room accommodates 2 people: one with a twin bed with pull-out trundle bed for two people; one with a bunk-bed which can sleep two people).
I am a very hospitable, friendly host; traveled a lot, lived abroad; speak 7 languages; enjoy different cultures; have three older kids (but they are away so it will be quite quiet!).
Shared bathroom, kitchen, living room, dining room, beautiful garden, parking, big ole' front and back porch, with porch furniture. I work during day so you pretty much have the house to yourself from 8:30 to 6, sometimes for longer.
Excellent location in vibrant, cultural neighborhood (Jamaica Plain): located on friendly, beautiful, tree-lined street. About 25-35 minutes total to downtown. One and half blocks from Jamaica Pond as well as the Arboretum (park). 5 minutes walk to shops, cafes, eclectic shops, great ethnic restaurants: Thai, Indian, Sushi, Japanese, Korean, Ethiopian, Italian, Chinese, Greek, and - unbelievable but true - even American!. It's 5 minutes walk to the bus going downtown Boston. It's ten minutes walk to the subway line going straight to downtown. The open design of the common areas offers plenty of space to entertain friends and family, yet private when quiet time needed.
There is a lake 5 minutes walk away where during the summer you can do sailing, row boating, and kayaking (they rent the boats at a very affordable rate). It's quite beautiful. If you're coming with kids, we also have board games like Monopoly, Risk, Clue, chess, backgammon, cards, etc. so there is plenty to keep them entertained. The Arnold Arboretum park is very big and a beautiful place to hike or stroll around, with plants and trees from around the world. You could easily spend half a day there.
Included: fully equipped kitchen, dishwasher, microwave, DVD, WiFi, computer, upright grand piano, outdoor ping-pong table. Washing machine negotiable. We have foamies or thermorest pads if you need extra sleeping spots. Just let me know.
There's always street parking available: it's free and no 'resident parking only' sticker needed. We have two short-haired cats who mostly spend their cushy little lives outside the house day and night. If you would prefer it, they can be kept at a neighbor's house for the time you are visiting.
Location is on Dunster Road in Jamaica Plain between Center and Dane. You can check out what the street looks like on (website hidden) Maps, street view, for a 'virtual drive' down the street.

Other Things to Note

Jonathan was (and is) a wonderful host. When he realized that there was an issue with fitting the mattress on the bed we were set to sleep in, he let us sleep in what I assume to be HIS room. And all of this happened while we were out, before we even noticed any issue. Not to mention that he is an extremely warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, and humorous guy overall. On the morning of the last day, he bought everyone staying in his house croissants! Sure, the apartment, like many in New England, is old and has its fair share of quirks that you wouldn't find in a hotel room. The stairs might creak and the doorknobs may be odd. But the stay was affordable, in a quiet but convenient neighborhood, and, once again, featured an awesome host. I would recommend Jonathan and his apartment to anybody who 1) is on a budget, 2) likes walking and taking public transit, 3) doesn't mind not having the sparkly hotel experience, and 4) likes cats.

About the Host, Jonathan
A father of three, with my eldest away in college, I am community-minded resident of a close-knit, friendly street in the vibrant, cultural, cosmopolitan and multi-cultural community of Jamaica Plain. I work as a grant-writer at an international human rights development agency. Originally from Canada, I have lived in Africa, Central America, Quebec, England and I speak 7 languages - to varying degrees. I am interested in international travel, affairs, politics, and meeting people of different cultures. I am active, like sports such as soccer, cross-country skiing, badminton, biking, kayaking, hiking, and camping. Our home is located in a very special and unique neighborhood, kind of like the way caring family neighborhoods used to be in the past - like living in a small village but located right in the core of a modern, cosmopolitan city. I love it!
