This room is up three flights of stairs - it's pretty quiet, and in a great location - guests would share a bathroom and kitchen with Geoffrey, my roommate when I'm in NYC. Washer Dryer, plenty of clean linens, and a comfortable bed!

The space

Rent my quiet back from the street room in the East Village. It's private and has everything you need, from wi fi to a tidy bathroom.! Its an extremely safe 24 hour neighborhood. There's lots of work by local artists in my kitchen, and a washer dryer you can use with the guidance of your hostess - it drains into the sink, nyc tenement style! Couples are ok, its just extra~! The bed is full size and has pillows galore, and the linens are fresh. It's a third floor walk up, in a well maintained prewar building, My block has a couple of nice restaurants, Supper and Il Bogato, and my favorite pizza is Rizzo's, a block and a half away on Clinton Street. Its close to a lot of pubs and shops but my particular street isn't noisy or crowded - things go block by block here in manhattan. I've had good experiences with all my guests so far - we've both been lucky!

Guest access

Guests have a washer/dryer they can use, and I'll leave a list of reasonable cleaning ladies - there's a courtyard on the ground floor where we leave our recyclables and trash, and all the basic comforts.

Interaction with guests

I'll be in California with my family - my usual roommate, Thomas, will be here - he's an experienced New Yorker, a low key photographer and personal assistant, and is a good guy to talk to if you're in the mood or need information. Otherwise he's usually in his room online or unwinding.

Other things to note

The apartment is in a 100 year old tenement building, and it slopes a bit - that's characteristic of the old East Village, as we're close to sea level and in fact as you get down towards Avenue D and C, you're on former swamp land!

No smoking - you'll have a roommate who lives in a separate room on the other side of the kitchen, washer dryer, and bathroom - there's lots of privacy and respect for personal space. Be courteous to my neighbors! There's a washer/dryer, but its a little tricky so don't use it until I show you how - be a bit quieter during the late night hours.

The cleanliness of the place is disastrous. My wife and I just moved to New York from Croatia, where rental apartment industry is pretty developed because of tourism, so we were expecting a certain level of cleanliness. The floor in the kitchen looks like it was never mopped, bottom of the bathtub is greasy and everything in the apartment has a layer of dust on it like it wasn't cleaned for a very long time. On top of that, the apartment is overcrowded with stuff, kitchen cupboards are filled with what looks like a pile of various old stuff and junk, and there is no sunlight whatsoever in the bedroom or kitchen. The whole place thus feels pretty suffocating. The dining table in the kitchen is barley usable because of its loose wooden legs, so you basically don't have a proper place to eat a meal in the whole apartment. The bathroom wasn't cleaned before we arrived, although the cleaning lady was supposed to do it, according to Jennifer. We complained and Jennifer reacted promptly and hired a cleaning lady again, so the bathroom was eventually "cleaned". Finally, the pictures posted on Airbnb website are outdated, the room was redecorated in the meantime and is actually nicer than shown in the pictures. Everything considered, a pretty horrible experience with a price tag of $1500 for a month long stay.

Response from Jennifer:
I did take care of Harvey's complaint the morning after his arrival. I think moving from Croatia the the economy and quality of life in a small apartment that is incredibly inexpensive for Manhattan was a jolt for him. Hope things get better!

The place was in a great location, walking distance to everything and my room was very private.

We enjoyed our stay in the East Village. This location was convenient as the metro is nearby, and there are many fantastic food places around (Katz, Supper). This place was very affordable for a stay in Manhattan. The room was cosy and very warm, which was great for our Winter stay! There was also an AC unit in the room in case it got too warm. Note that this is an old building with no elevator so all luggage has to be carried up 3 flights of stairs - pack appropriately for this! Jennifer was not in town when we visited but her roommate Geoffrey was friendly and welcoming and mostly hung out in his room. The only issues we encountered with this place were with the bathroom - the door could not be fully closed and locked, and the hot water from the shower was irregular and would turn cold intermittently. Guests should also be warned about the hot metal pipe in the bathroom that is not fully insulated - it is VERY hot and burns if accidentally touched. Aside from that, this apartment was cosy, warm and an excellent place for our first trip to New York. Highly recommended!

Very nice neighborhood with plenty of restaurants. I did not meet host, who was out of town, but she was very easy to work with and she had a very nice friend set me up.

I enjoyed the stay. It is very close to the F line so it's pretty convenient. Although I didn't get a chance to meet Jennifer, she had a friend open the door and drop off the keys for me which worked well. The apartment itself is quite small and old, but it provides a cozy feel and it had everything we needed. Highly recommended!

Jennifer was a great hostess, helping me , at the last moment, so I could stay near my daughter's apartment. She went out of her way to assist me. Classic east village apartment, augmented by a great TV and air conditioner.

I'm a New York based writer and singer who does a lot of spoken word gigs, and often visits San Francisco. I have 4 pop type books published, I hang out at Double Down, Eastern Bloc, and many other spots in the East Village. NIcky's Vietnamese is right across the street, and has the best sandwiches I've had in my life! My friend Leslie will be your host if I'm in California - she's a painter and really knows the area. We're pretty laid back!
