"It’s easy to get lost here in Akaretler, not because it’s confusing or large (it’s neither), but because the mind is apt to transport you to the places of your past. The scent of fresh pizza wafts freely as car tires rumble over furtive cobblestone: am I in Rome? Distant hillside homes appear stacked like wayward LEGO bricks: is that you, Rio de Janeiro? The city around me refuses to sleep: what happened to New York? History, it has been said, repeats itself, and Akaretler is no different. What was once a thriving, vibrant quarter of Constantinople is now a thriving, vibrant quarter of Istanbul.
