Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Clear water, coconut palms, great surf and a laid-back Caribbean atmosphere make Puerto Viejo a favorite among travelers.
Formerly a small fishing village, Puerto Viejo has grown rapidly in recent years. Avid surfers, drawn to the famous Salsa Brava waves, have made Puerto Viejo a hotspot on the surfing circuit.
The center of town now has many souvenir and surf shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and tour companies.
Casa Caribe is the perfect place to stay in Puerto Viejo and Alex is a great host!
We spent our one week honeymoon there and it was awesome. The house is big for one couple, and is very close to town but surrounded by nature. We mostly kept to ourselves and did several of the nice things to do around Puerto Viejo such as biking to Manzanillo, visiting the Cahuita national park, and rafting (highly recommended). Alex was around if needed and is accommodating and friendly. At one point he had us taste and drink two different types of coconut he had just cut off a tree, which was great.
In short: Highly recommended.
Some tips: We spent 50 dollars each on a transfer (in our case it was Gecko Trails which we reserved online) directly from the airport to Casa Caribe and feel it was worth it. The drivers know the place just by name "Casa Caribe" or if needed you tell them its the street passing by "Kaya's place". The exchange on the "departure's" part of the Alajuela airport (second floor) is fair, you need to show a passport and say where you're staying, definitely buy some Colones there. There's also an ATM and a bank (also fair exchange rate) in Puerto Viejo, sometimes the ATM runs out of money (this happened our last weekend because of "Easter").
Very luxurious house. Very secure with a fence and gate. The patio on the second floor was great to hang out on the hammock and have breakfast at the table since it got nice cool breezes. The landscaping around the house was great too as there were lots of beautiful trees, plants and flowers. The were also lots of birds that would hang out around the house and sing their songs. Alex lives in the house right next door and we had him take us snorkeling in Manzanillo which was quite the treat (for an additional fee of course, but it was reasonable). It is a short walk to cross the street to get to the beautiful black sand beach which is great for swimming or just relaxing and taking in the ocean. Also just a short walk to get to the north side of town which has a good supermarket to buy food at.
The house is huge and beautiful. There are tons of windows but it’s well shaded and doesn’t get too hot. The bedrooms are small but it means the living room and kitchen are large and have tons of room to hang out in. The hammock on the upstairs deck was also really nice to hang out in!
The house is right outside of town, and away from the road (so it’s much quieter) but still close enough to walk to Playa Negra in a few minutes, or walk to the town in 10 mins or so. Not bad at all.
Alex was a great host and gave us recommendations when we asked about things to do in the area, and shared some of his favorites with us.
Alex's place was beautiful, spacious, clean and comfortable. Alex was a wonderful and welcoming host and he helped make our stay in Puerto Viejo comfortable and fun. The rental is perfectly situated near both the town of Puerto Viejo and the beach. It was the perfect location for our vacation needs.
We had an amazing time in Casa Caribe. (As others before me wrote) Casa Caribe is specious, beautiful and a very comfortable place to stay in. We took our kids (5 & 2) and opted for the ac option. The daily SIESTA became such a great time for relaxing and recharging before the evenings adventure. The kitchen is very convenient, we cooked and had salads when we didn't think the kids will handle eating out (or the long wait for the food...). The place is close enough to Puerto Viejo, that there is no problem getting there with the kids by foot, but not too close to suffer from the noise. It's very close to Playa Negra, which is great for swimming (be sure to remember your flip flops as the sand does get hot). And Alex and Yanira. Great hosts, attentive, welcoming, helpful and accommodating. Everything you would want your hosts to be.
Grasias por todo, Pura Vida! :-)
Liel and family.
I love Alex and this place!
I thought it looked nice in the pictures and had great reviews so I booked it but honestly, the pictures don't even do it justice.
It is spacious for two but could easily hold four. It is a short walk to the beach and in to Puerto Viejo. I spent many hours in the hammock listening to the ocean and birds and then was delighted to walk back inside to AIR CONDITIONING! It was a nice bonus on a few really hot days.
I would 100% recommend this place and Alex will take wonderful care of you.
Alex is a very kind, polite, and responsible host. We stayed only briefly (one night) but the place was tidy and as described. It is located right next to black beach which is great for swimming (no reefs), and very close to the center of PV. We highly recommend Alexander as a host.
Good luck finding a better value than Casa Caribe in Puerto Viejo. I'm sure there are more luxurious vacation rentals in the area, but for the price Casa Caribe is clean, comfortable, well located, spacious, and comes with as gracious a host as you could ever ask for.
The house is more than big enough for a couple, perfect for two couples (although the bathroom isn't particularly private), and could easily sleep 6 surfers.
It's comfortable enough that, on the day we were stuck inside due to rain, we happily passed the time reading on the balcony and listening to the jungle. It's also well air conditioned. Location-wise, it's a short walk (5-10 minutes, depending) into the heart of town, and the black sand beach across the street -- while not the cleanest beach in the world -- is perfect for swimming.
The kitchen is huge and there are plenty of dishes, cups, and silverware, as well as a coffee maker and blender. There was also a large fresh water jug which was enough for two of us for six days. There are only a few pots and pans and no proper knives for food prep, but we didn't have any trouble making a few meals while we were there.
Alex is right next door, super friendly, attentive, and a great resource for anything from restaurant recommendations to a detailed explanation of all the area's surf breaks. He runs Casa Caribe less like an Air Bnb and more like an old school one, where you have a local to answer your questions each day. He also mixes a great drink.
The next time we visit Puerto Viejo, we'll definitely stay at Casa Caribe.
You are absolutely right, the beach should be perfectly clean, unfortunately the local government only serves to collect taxes and don’t do their work. We must do more as a community but it has been hard to come together.
Tell your surfing friends I'll have the best knives and pots and also a grill to make grilled fish after a day of good waves in Salsa Brava!
Micah, thanks for the tips.
Alex and Yanira were wonderful hosts. Their rental is clean, quiet and very beautiful. Had a wonderful time as Alex arranged for surfing and snorkeling. Their property is a little off the main busy area of town but a short 5 minute walk (which you can do either along the beach or the road leading into town. Perfect. Pura vida!
It was absolutely amazing! the house, the place, the host, everything was perfect. we travelled to puerto viejo to explore the pura vida and we definitely found it there. blacks beach is about 1 minute from the house and everything else is about 5-10 minutes with the bike.
a big thank you for this experience, it was 1 week in little paradise! if we ever come back to puerto viejo we would book this house again.highly recommend it!
* the house looks so much better than on the pictures, you may should take new ones:-)
