Finding Billy and this Guesthouse in Bogue Heights is honestly one of the biggest blessings I've ever received. Simply put, this is the place to stay in Jamaica if you are visiting the Montego Bay area. I'll break my review down by a few key categories: 1. The house itself: it is located in Bogue Heights, about an 8 minute drive to The Hip Strip (tourist area). It is located on a hill (hence the name Heights) and is surrounded by locals, a true and authentic Jamaican neighborhood. There are little stands and pop-up shops located 200 feet away from Billy's Guesthouse and they are so amazing and convenient to buy water/juice, beer, hot Jamaican meals, food, really anything. The neighbors are all very nice and immediately recognized me as one of Billy's guests, therefore giving me true Jamaican prices on everything I bought. The guest room is spacious, incredibly secure/safe and has a nice bathroom with a well working shower, toilet, sink, a kitchen with a fairly large freezer and fridge, gas stove, small table, two chairs and a kitchen sink. You get your own key to lock up the steel entrance to your patio, which provides a great view for yourself. The bedrooms each have high powered fans and the rooms were clean and comfortable. The WiFi worked great and I had absolutely no issues at all. Again, simply put, Billy does an amazing job of keeping this place comfortable, clean, safe and extremely livable. Accessibility: Billy is always welcome to giving you and your party a ride to anywhere for a very small and fair fee. Just ask him ahead of time, and he will do the best he can to accommodate! For the more adventurous, you can take a 10 minute walk down the hill (which has beautiful views) and get to a major road where you can take route taxis and buses. This is what all the locals do and it is extremely cheap and again convenient, but just look up on Travel Advisor on how to locate and deal with public transportation in Jamaica. Even if you don't ask Billy for any transportation services, he is very knowledgable about the island and can point you in the direction on how to best and safely get around. Billy himself: he is one of the coolest, most down to earth guys you will ever meet. Just by the fact that he picks you up from the airport, immediately takes you to get money exchanged at the best rate on the island and takes you to a Grocery store all before getting to his house is a true testament of his willingness to make your trip the best possible. He loves people and that's why he does this. Truly, he loves being around people, sharing stories/meals, and even listening to music and inviting you to go up the hill to hang out with some of his friends outside and getting to know his guests. He will give...
I don't think we could have asked for a better start to our time in Jamaica... Billy and Maria picked us up from the airport and we drove to their place via a supermarket so we could withdraw some cash and pick up a couple of supplies.
Once we had settled in, Billy took us down the road to the nearby jerk centre so we could grab a bite to eat and we met a few of the locals, confirming that this is the real Jamaica and not the one you will find in a resort - exactly what we wanted to experience.
We ended up having a great evening with Billy and Maria, with good conversation over some Jamaican rum and they gave us some handy advice for starting our 10-day trip around the country the next day. They even drove us to the bus depot the next day for a small fee so we could catch a route taxi towards Treasure Beach.
We also ended up catching up with Billy for a couple of beers before we left Jamaica and will definitely look them up again if we head back.
This was a great start to our Jamaica experience as we were greeted at the airport by Billy and Maria. They stopped by a grocery store on the way for us to pick up supplies. Being new to Jamaica this was a huge benefit! We are on a budget so having a kitchen and groceries right away helped to plan meals. We ate the first meal on the roof with a candle Maria gave us and enjoyed the View...so fun! We recommend Billy's for sure as a start to your Jamaican experience. Try to run the hill they are on. We did it our first morning and met the neighbors and had a great time. It's a huge hill though so we walked some. There are cheap route taxis just outside the house that are the way to go for transportation into town.
From the moment Billy and his wife Maria, picked me up from the airport, I knew this trip would be wonderful. They were very welcoming and I immediately felt as if I were visiting good friends. The location of their guesthouse provided the perfect get away that my spirit needed. Each morning I was delighted to step outside and take in the sights and sounds of the hillsides and marvel at the abundance of surrounding trees, many bearing exotic fruits. I loved the sense of community present in the area and enjoyed my interactions with children, shopkeepers and neighbors. One kind neighbor in particular, was very generous and provided fresh fish and freshly picked vegetables that were deliciously prepared by Maria and incorporated in amazing meals. During my stay, I took a couple of day trips with Billy and Maria to Scott’s Cove and Ahh…Ras Natango. I always felt safe and ventured out by myself to downtown Montego Bay, the Hip Strip and Negril. Taxis were very inexpensive, ran frequently and were easily accessible just a very short walk down the hill. The room was comfortable. Each day I enjoyed relaxing afternoon naps. I also enjoyed evening rum cocktails and attending a couple of local neighborhood parties. Time with Billy, Maria and their friends was always filled with great conversation and laughter. I’m very grateful for each moment of my stay. Even though this was my fourth trip to Jamaica, it was my first time experiencing true Jamaican culture. I definitely recommend Billy’s place and look forward to staying at the Irie Ites Guesthouse again!
