Located on the shores of Lake Atitlán under the San Pedro, Atitlán, and Toliman volcanoes, La Fortuna at Atitlan is tucked into the private bay of Patzisotz, only a 5 minute boat ride from Panajachel. Here you can relax in our lush jungle and gardens, and take in the view of Central America’s most spectacular lake. We have two bungalow suites with king size beds, and luxurious private spa like outdoor garden bathrooms with hot tubs, and two regular bungalows with a queen bed and single, and private luxurious garden bathrooms. Breakfast and dinner is available. Hiking, kayaking, scuba diving, and exploring the indigenous villages around the lake can be organized through the lodge. Come and experience the natural and cultural wonder of Lago Atitlán at La Fortuna in Guatemala's most beautiful tourist destination. Suites are $99 a night, and regular rooms are $66. High season rates may be slightly higher (December and Holy Week). We are the only hotel on a private bay - and attract lots of birds including nesting herons because of the tranquility and being off the beaten track.
We have a lake front hot tub and free wi-fi on the property for all guests to enjoy.
Please note that this location is not ideal for those with mobility issues or small children.
I had a great experience at La Fortuna. The property and bungalow were even better than pictured and the food was great. In addition Kat and Steve were great hosts, meeting and chatting with us upon arrival, offering tips on places to check out, and helping coordinate transportation back to the airport. I highly recommend La Fortuna fofr other travelers seeking a quite/relaxed alternative to San Pedro/San Marcos/Pana.
My experience at La Fortuna was nothing short of amazing! My experience actually began a week before arrival when Steve and Kat communicated with me by text and email. They thoroughly addressed my questions and put my mind at ease. Upon arrival by water taxi I was immediately greeted at the dock by the GM, Georgy, who provided me with a fantastic overview of the accommodations. The bungalows were SO cool, the food was exquisite, and the company and conversation with the staff and other vacationers during dinner was delightful. I am also eternally grateful for Kat letting me borrow her backpack during a hike. Georgy also went above and beyond to show me the Pana market on her morning before work and help me purchase a souvenir by communicating with the shop owner. Such gracious hosts!! I would recommend La Fortuna to anyone.
My husband and I loved our time at La Fortuna and really didn't want to leave! The atmosphere of being "off-grid" is exactly the type of place we like to stay. Although it was off grid and so quiet and peaceful, the wifi was good and we were able to work while we were there which is a must for us.
Kat & Steve were very welcoming and accommodating and Steve is a great cook!! We enjoyed all our meals on property. Their attention to detail is noticeable and was appreciated from design and cleanliness to service and amenities.
Highly recommend staying at La Fortuna if you're looking for a retreat away from the hustle of the cities and towns around Guatemala.
We hope to return one day and would love to bring a group of friends to take over the whole property!!
Wow, what more could we say about La Fortuna that hasn't already been said? My boyfriend and I spent 3 lovely nights at this place and it was so hard to leave! Definitely was the most gorgeous place I've ever stayed on Airbnb. We could definitely tell so much thought was put into the place considering how much detail there was throughout the property. We loved the outdoor bathrooms, delicious breakfast brought to our bungalows, and the beautiful views throughout the property. The reception area was recently completed a few months ago and that was one of our favorite places to hang out during the day as well as to have dinner and conversations with so many other guests. We met so many interesting people during our stay! Wifi did not reach our bungalow, but there were various board games in our bungalow so we thought that was a nice entertainment touch. The new property manager, Georgy, was also so much fun to hang out with on days in which we were just lounging on the property. Kat & Steve also checked in on us everyday to see if we needed anything or had questions so the hospitality was superb. Overall, we absolutely loved our time at La Fortuna and wouldn't hesitate to book again should we find ourselves back in Lake Atitlan.
Warning to future guests as you do have to take a boat should you travel to other parts of the island, the public boat people will sometimes try to rip you off (especially when they see you have luggages/backpacks) by charging you a higher boat fee than what the locals were paying. Thank goodness for the information provided when we booked the place that the boat fee from Pana to La Fortuna (and vice versa) was 10 quetzales as they've tried charging us at least double the amount numerous times during our stay!
Our stay here was AMAZING! It really is eco luxury at its best: awesome bungalow, breathtaking views of the lake and an outdoor hot tub! Kat and Steve were lovely, and the new guest manager Georgie was so bubbly and went out of her way to help us. Really wished we could have spent a few extra nights here!
Amazing on all fronts, both location and service.
Atitlan is already incredible, there's no doubt about that. But this place they have built is beyond amazing. The unique details, the layout, the character and location. All executed awesomely by people who clearly have a passion for it.
We also had some tight logistical requirements we needed help sorting out, and they made suggestions and booked everything for us to get us where we needed to be.
We will be returning as soon as humanly possible and staying much longer next time.
La Fortuna is a little piece of paradise. We spent three glorious nights there; we kayaked, we swam, we went for walks, we rested. It was such a treat having our meals delivered to our little balcony every morning and evening. We would go back to Guatemala just to go to La Fortuna. Thanks so much Kat and Steve!

Steve and Katharine Kmack (us) met while travelling and working in Latin America, fell in love, and then fell in love with Guatemala. Inspired by the balinese style bungalows discovered on a backpacking trip through South East Asia in 2009, Steve dreamed up La Fortuna. Steve has worked in the tourism industry for the past 5 years, while Katharine has spent many years working in government to protect the environment .Combining their two passions, they have created an ecological haven on Lago Atitlan, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. All materials used in construction have been locally grown and crafted, while maintaining the most minimal impact on the environment. All electricity is generated by solar power.
