Bush Retreat, bordering Opua Forest, is a spacious family home with a large garden set against a huge bush backdrop. We are about 8 minutes' drive from Paihia and it is a one-minute drive to the Russell car ferry. Opua is a deep water harbour with a long history, but since the marina was built it has become a haven for international yachtsmen.
The price includes continental breakfast: cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt, toast and spreads and coffee and tea. If you wish to cook a meal, you are welcome to use our kitchen facilities any time. Internet access is available.
Room 2 has a comfortable queen bed with bedside tables. Share bathroom and separate toilet if we have other guests.
Bush Retreat is a smoke-free environment, but the garden is large enough for those wish to have a 'puff' so nobody else is disturbed!
There is ample parking. We do not have any pets, and hesitate to have a dog, as kiwis can sometimes be heard in the bush at night.
Minimum stay 2 nights.
A coastal walk, and a cycle track within walking distance. The Marina Cafe is just down the road and the Cruising Club offers dinners and often some great entertainment.
Interaction with Guests
We are always happy to interact with our guests, offering tips and pointers for activities. In the evenings we like to see how their day has gone and to enjoy a drink with them.
The sheer beauty of the coastline is stunning. There is a good chance to interact with the friendly locals in the Cruising Club.
There is no public transport, but a shuttle service is available. We have taxied our guests around for a nominal fee.
We were first time airbnb users so we had no idea what to expect. We were extremely happy. Both Susan and her husband are excellent hosts. We felt like we were visiting old friends, Susan couldn't do enough to help us. We were told about the local area and tons to sew amd do. Breakfast was a feast. I totally recommend this place and this couple
Very nice house and lovely hosts! Private room, bathroom and toilet are shared with other quests. Everything is clean and in good condition. Super location for exploring Bay of Islands. Breakfast is one of the best in NZ Airbnb. We were lucky to meet a nice couple who stayed there at the same time with us.
This place is such a treat. Susan and her husband are so hospitable and fed us homemade cookies, cake, and jam. We also met other travelers in their home. The house was big, easy to find, plenty of parking, close to a running trail and great historical and local knowledge from our hosts.
Great experience. Lovely family. Very friendly stay and dlicious breakfast.
A wonderful and peaceful house where we could listen to the Kiwi calling at night from our window. Both hosts are really nice and considerate, thank you so much.
Our stay was very good. The place was very clean and well kept. We were nicely looked after and the hosts Susan and Vladislav are absolutely amazing and very warm people. Added attraction for guests can be the garden both maintain with their select plantations of various fresh fruits and veges (for the nature lovers :)).
All in all a really good and warm place to stay. Strongly recommended.
Susan and Ladislav were wonderful hosts, we felt welcome and had a nice conversation in the evening. The bed was comfy and everything was clean and tidy. After the good breakfast, it was hard to say goodbye. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend.

We fell in love with the beautiful Bay of Islands while on holiday with our children. We love the sea and bush, and are enjoying life in the small, friendly community of Opua. We have travelled extensively, usually visiting friends and family in Europe and Australia, but other trips have included campervanning in Northern Territory and Western Australia. Ladis's passions are his garden, cooking, fishing and feeding the flock of quails which visit us from the bush. Sue cannot live without a good book, and good social life. She is treasurer of the Bay of Islands Travel Club, does aquarobics, belongs to a book club and is a regular at the local quiz night at the Cruising Club. She runs a Spanish evening class.
Running the house as a B&B is fun. We have made some good friends, and enjoyed learning from our guests, while making them as comfortable as possible. People sometimes come for a night, then ask if they can stay for week.
The Bay of Islands does not have a local bus service, so if you arrive without your own transport we can pick you up and drop you off at your arrival destination, and at your tour pickup points for a nominal fee, which will be calculated on the mileage incurred.
