  • We enjoyed our stay at the cabina, it is very well kept and has a nice homie-nook feel. The only two things that didnt go well for us were that in the three days we stayed here the maid never came which only really caused an issue with the bathroom garbage space and the cabina is located right next to the main street in town (which can be noisy due to the dirt bikes and quads). When you stay here you have access to the Banana Bars pool which is nice. Pia helped us check in after hours and she is very friendly.

  • Pia's Studio is great! So close to the beach and very relaxing. The shower smelt a little bit but i think you have to expect that when travelling to tropical places. The Air Conditioning worked good, the bed was comfy and the kitchen had all utensils to make pretty much everything. We had a great stay :)

  • The reservation was canceled 99 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.

  • To say that my stay was nothing short of a complete mistake and misunderstanding is an understatement.

I should start by saying that my review is based mostly on the fact that I did not do research before booking this location and the property. With that said, I urge you to please do research before booking!!!

I was not able to cancel the room because I booked it the day before and then realized that it was located 5hrs away from SJO airport and had to purchase a charter flight from SJO to Tambor. But I decide to make the best of it and not cry over spilled milk.

Upon arriving Pia was kind enough to have a taxi waiting for me for $45. 30min later on an extremely bad dirt road, I arrived to paradise.Um, Not exactly! Pia was more pleasant via emails than she is in person. She seems reserved and uninviting, which made it hard to try and hold a conversation.

The room is as described and not much else to see, and though it was low season (Sept) I would've appreciated some sort of info on where to go, other than the generic "go to your right or left, most restaurants are closed for low season, but enjoy and relax". The view is what you would expect and based on the way everyone speaks about the beaches I was expecting the next best thing this side of heaven! To my dismay, the beach was a disaster. It looked uninhabited, desolate and in desperate need of a face lift. But serene at the same time. So I sucked it up and enjoyed the waves reading a book.
There was no light in the restroom and the light in the balcony was out which made it for a very Dark first night. Especially when the lights on the compound went out completely. Pia, did have someone fix it in the morning, and was apologetic about it. Based on one review I read, she still has yet to fix the bed out on the balcony which would have been a great save, since most people would like to sit and read and enjoy a night cap, coffee or wine.

The worst part of this was the shower which smelled as bad as a New York City sewer! The water though came out clear had an odor alone made it difficult to shower. The TV was also hard to watch, as the bed is so absolutely low to the ground and the TV is no where near eye level, I'd suggest moving the tv down a bit if the cable extended, but that I assume would make too much sense.

So, that's pretty much my rant. In a nutshell, this destination is pretty much for hippies, surf junkies, and nature lovers, who want the literal sense of "Pura Vida". It's a simpler life than I expected or was use to, to say the least.

  • Pia and Pini were great hosts. They were easy to communicate with and the villa was exactly as described. If your idea of a Costa Rican vacation is to enjoy a modern, yet rustic villa so close to the beach that you can hear the waves breaking as you are enjoying breakfast on a huge and tastefully decorated front yard, then Pia's villa is for you. We did not want to leave and coming back from our daily adventures felt like coming home. Pura Vida indeed!

  • The place is just as advertised and pictured. Pia and everyone that works there were very friendly and helpful. The grounds are kept nice, I felt safe, and it is really, really close to the beach. The kitchenette pretty much has everything you need and there is a market close by. I had to work part time while I was there and I really enjoyed brewing a cup of coffee and bringing my computer out to the balcony for a relaxing workspace. You are backed up to the road (many places are in Santa Teresa) but I didn’t really notice it because the cabina faces out towards a nice garden. I had a great stay and would come back.

  • Santa Teresa was fabulous. We could have stayed forever on the beach playing in the waves. It was very relaxing. Fabulous location!!
The accommodation was like camping out; adequate and functional, but very basic. We enjoyed cooking food and eating outdoors under the covered veranda.
We had some difficulty finding the cabina and the dirt road into Santa Teresa was treacherous. We would stay here again.

  • We stayed in Pia's place the first two weeks of April 2013. When we arrived at 19:30 we couldn't get the keys as the receptionist had left for some reason. Pia quickly resolved the issue though and had the keys driven up to a nearby restaurant where we were waiting.

When we got in a number of things were missing or didn't work properly. The toilet didn't flush, there was no light in the kitchen, the TV had heavy static on all channels, rotten drain smell in the bathroom, the outside couch was broken etc. This was very disappointing and we actually considered cancelling our stay there. But when we told Pia she really did all she could to get most things in order very quickly.

The cabina is very basic. It is completely unromantic but fairly clean. Basically it's a place to sleep but not a place you'd want to spend time during the day. There is one room with two wide beds but no other furniture like tables or chairs. So if you want to eat inside you have to eat on your bed. The kitchen is very limited. We did cook but were missing essential things like a kettle, knife, bowl, corkscrew etc. There is no AC and this was more of a problem than we expected. It gets extremely hot during the night and we woke up every morning in a bed soaked in sweat. We tried not to think too much about all the previous guests' sweat. :) The shower works ok though and there is a very nice cleaning lady that comes by every other day or so.

All in all Pia was a great host and worked hard to get everything in order but her place was basically working against her. We actually felt a bit sorry about all the work we caused her. We got the feeling that she very much wants this to be a great place so maybe she'll improve it over time.

As disappointed as we were with the cabina, the location is quite amazing. It is close to a fantastic beach with lots of hammocks, a very nice and paradisal garden area and an ok pool area. The location is definitely five star.

  • We had an amazing stay!! The house is absolutely adorable, our perfect dream beach house. With a massive backyard we spent most of our time at the beach or on the hammocks. The house was clean and the beds so comfortable. The bathroom may have been the best part, with an enclosed/outdoor shower covered by palm trees. The people in mal Pais were so nice! Make sure to try the bakery and pasta basta (mojitos were to die for). The supermarkets are within walking distance. Our favorite part of the day was going out to the beach before sunset and watching the surfers catch some waves. Mal Pais was the perfect location to get away from mainstream society and be surrounded by kind people, ocean, and small town lifestyle. We defiantly plan on coming back again!! Pia sent a made every day to keep the house clean and she was available to help us with our every need.

  • We had a great stay, 9/10 points.

The beach front veranda is superb and the same holds true for the location on maybe the best beach in the country. I already recommended it to friends and would go again anytime.

Some things to add, also w. respect to the previous evaluations
    - The kitchen is now fully equipped, also with basic ingredients like salt, oil, drinking water, and coffee
    - There is a modern gas grill outside
    - The pool belongs to the Luz de Vida bungalows next door but you can use it.

Not giving 10/10 because the dorm rooms don't cool down at night (no AC).

    Tips:
If you need a good surf instructur ask for a guy called Ran. Habanero restaurant serves great dinner on the beach and is just 2 minutes away.

    Pura vida!
