About this listing
A bach on the water's edge with a stunning view of a quiet lagoon, beautiful beach with prime swimming and snorkelling spots, away from the crowds yet close to a few other luxury holiday homes, resort, restaurant and local supermarket.
A cozy house on a quiet sandy beach, overlooking a postcard like turquoise lagoon, one of the most beautiful spots on Rarotonga. Sparkling clean water filled with small tropical fish and some blue starfish are easy to spot too.
The house is a private property but is available for rent each year for a few months when we are away.
The House has all the modern facilities, everything you may need if you want to try local specialities and exotic fruits, juicers and blenders, hammock on the deck, optionally 2 bikes (extra)
Please note this is not a hotel but a modest private home with the owners away. If you expect round the clock room service or a front desk, this place is not for you. Staying in someone else's home requires sometimes communicating with the owner and service providers (i.e. Meter Reader, Tradespeople).
There is one bedroom available with big king size bed and a cosy lighting, big lounge with wooden table for 4, comfy leather sofa, small open plan kitchen with 4 windows and big sliding 4 segment door to the deck.
There is big high table on the deck with two stools allowing you a great view of the lagoon but you can also take the table from inside to the deck. You can enjoy your breakfast or dinners by the water's edge (there is a wooden table and bench under the house) - great sunsets over the lagoon and you can see the sunrise from your bedroom window. Half of the deck outside the bedroom has glass windows so you can lounge there even if you happen to have a bad weather day.
one of the best beaches on Rarotonga - clean, quiet, beautiful spot for snorkelling and swimming with crystal clear turquoise water.
There is a wooden table with benches so each morning you can have your breakfast with sand under your feet and each night you can sit right in front of our house, listen to the surf and watch the stars. You can often see a lazy starfish and school of little fish right from your bedroom window. If you go further into the water, up to your chest, you have a a view of our majestic mountains covered with lush tropical forest.
BUILDING AND VIEW
The building itself is simple, not very fancy, this is why the price is low for what the house has to offer in terms of interior and stunning view and location. The house is raised up on high stilts so that it overlooks the lagoon.
As you walk onto the property it's not impressive but once you get up the steps and open the gate to the deck you have the most fantastic view you can imagine. There are mountains behind you and a sparkling turquoise lagoon with the ocean beyond in front of you, fine, soft sand of the beach fringed with swaying coconut trees and most of the time no one else, just one quiet house, very few people passing by on their walks, otherwise just you and breathtaking nature.
If you value privacy and a pristine beach the water here is exceptionally clean, there is one house next to us but not too close, we basically don't see the neighbours as their entrance is on the far side of their house and there is a driveway and some palm trees between our houses. There is a huge empty section opposite our house, seen from the kitchen windows, behind it there is a view of majestic mountains. There are also two empty sections on one side of the house. A walk away there is a nice resort with a restaurant but the visitors usually stay in front of the resort on the beach chairs and rarely wander this way.
COMFORT and security- WHAT MATTERS IN RAROTONGA
The house has mosquito nets in all the windows. There are big sliding doors and high windows along the whole beach side of the house opening onto the roofed deck so the house is bright but not hot. There are also 4 windows on the other sides in the main room and another one in the bedroom allowing the breeze to go through. basically when it's hot you can always find a window to get some air in. This is something very important on the island.
There are tiles on the floor to keep the house cool and having it raised up means there are no CRAWLY VISITORS - no centipedes or other uninvited crawling guests here ever, very few mosquitos (only at certain part of the day and when it's really hot and still) so you can enjoy time on the deck and on the beach without need to use mosquito spray.
The bus stops wherever you flag it down. You can walk to the best, third biggest supermarket on the island where you can get good deals on local vegetables and fruit and where you can find some local specialities - apart from having all main brands they sell bread from local bakery and dishes cooked by the people from the village. You can get here ika mata - coconut fish, freshly squeezed coconut cream, locally baked cakes, plates of delicious local food. A trade mark of the shop is its icecream - big island scoops. get one and use the wifi sitting at the tables in front of the shop.
Next to the supermarket there is a Take away and a small cafe -very good value for money.
A good restaurant, "Vaima" serves Parrot fish, a must try here. You can walk to Vaima either on the road, a bit past the supermarket, about 10 minutes walk, or stroll there along the beach. you can dine at the tables on the beach, sand between your toes.
For rent only to very reliable respectful and cultured people with reference. We entrust you with all our earthly possessions so we would like to be sure you are going to take good care of them and respect our little slice of paradise.
To replace even simple things here is often very difficult and stuff is expensive. A lot of our stuff came from New Zealand at high shipping costs, like our beloved sofa or bean bags.
So if you use an outdoor sofa, bean bags or wooden table on the beach and there is going to be high tide, please remember to pull these things back up or they might get washed away.
We hope you will enjoy your holidays here and will do our best to help you with all your arrangements and advice.
It is always really rewarding to hear back or find letters from our gusts praising the place and telling us how they enjoyed it here. With some we remained friends. So far we only had good experiences and hope it will stay like this.
2014 we stayed in Europe for 3 months, we have arranged a cleaner and paid in advance, sadly you can't always count on the cleaners in Raro, the ones who came specifically to do cleaning job are employed full time in the resorts, others come when it suits them. It's easier when you are there.
We tried to do our best to have the house presentable for the guests, the neighbour offered to replace the cleaner, she then stayed in the house when the guests were not using it and sadly she did not our email where we explained we offered to one of our guests an very early arrival and when they arrived she was still staying in the house. She cleaned it and then proved a great help to them and to our other guests with everything but this is island reality to you.
That's a little story to show you not everything there goes according to the plan but if you can relax and accept the island way it often rewards you in the end.
i really hope that everything will go smoothly when you are there but in case of any problems at all talk to us straight away, happy to fix any problem distance allowing or refund or talk to our neighbour (we will give you emergency phone numbers and emails)
other than this - just enjoy your stay!
beach table, baby cot (please request well in advance), juicer, blender, towels
Interaction with Guests
We rent out this house only when we are overseas and provide local phone numbers and a phone to call these numbers for free for:
- friend with mechanical skills
- us via local number
Vaimaanga - great beach, never crowded, often empty, good swiming spot and everything you need within walking distance - great little supermarket, best on the island for fresh bread, vegies, fish, steak and fruits (Wigmore's Super Store) Palm Grove Resort and Vaima Restaurant, Cafe, Bus stop, playground for kids
there is a bus that stops right in front of the house - just flag down the hourly buses in either direction. Check rarotonga buses for the schedule. Buses are once an hour. Renting a car, scooter or our bikes are another option to get around if you even want to get a away from the beach or the jungle hikes that are possible by heading inland.
Other Things to Note
We do have a 42" TV but no reception, you are welcome to bring your own movies on a USB Stick or small 2.5" self powered hard drive. Landline phone and internet available on request.
no smoking inside the house
Please take notice of our check in and check out time. We often can't be flexible as most of our guests arrive really early and leave on the midnight flight so allowing everyone stay longer means the cleaning in between the guests would be impossible. Some guests book extra nights or night to ensure longer stay. When there is no other bookings till the last moments we are happy to let you stay longer but we can't promise anything. Ask if you want - it never hurts, otherwise please plan according to the check in and check out times. Thanks
future mum happy soon she will bring a little treasure to this piece of paradise - what a place for kids to grow up
Ev's property was fantastic. Exactly as described in the listing. It was the perfect beach bungalow in a beautiful beach setting. You can tell the owners take pride in the property. They left a packet and brochures with helpful tips and spots to visit around the island. We almost felt like locals!
The location is extremely convenient as it is close to Wigmore's supermarket (try the 30 different ice cream flavors), and many other resorts which offer food and drink options.
We look forward to coming back to this little slice of paradise.
Marcus and Eve have a prefect beach house overlooking the lagoon for a relaxing holiday. The hosts are attentive and prompt answering all our questions and helping us out with any issues we had. The beach out the front is perfect for snorkelling with clear shallow water full of coral and fish. Of the six locations we dived on Rarotonga, in front of the house turned out to be one of the best locations. Thank you for a memorable holiday, I can't recommend this place more highly. We will definitely be back.
Aaron and his partner were very attentive and easygoing guests and we cannot recommend this young couple highly enough to any host. All the communication was very pleasant and if something needed attention Aaron was helpful and patient. Once again thank you for being such great guests. We will definitely welcome you back.
Great spot, stunning view and hardly any people around. So if you want R and R it's the perfect space. Would advise getting your own transport in form of bike or scooter so you can get around as the hourly bus can be a bit of a pain. Cheapest supermarket on island is close by
This a great spot on a virtually deserted beach, if you enjoy privacy this is the place. We were there for 10 days and had about 2 or 3 people a day walking by. The home can best be described as a rustic beach house. The stairs are quite steep, but would not be a problem for 90% of people. The sliding doors are not in the best shape, but they close and lock. It's about 10 minutes from Muri beach and 20 minutes from town on a scooter, a very good location. A scooter or car is the most practical way to get around. A scooter is about $20/day including fuel. Mosquito's were around, but not a problem
Thank you for your Feedback Brian. Like we explained the cleaner claimed he could not find the key the day before you arrived which was obviously a lame excuse and we had to ask a friend to look for the key who then went ahead and cleaned the house to the best of her abilities in exchange for your early checkin. The louvre windows can look 'dirty' after one heavy rain so if that had happened during the time of our departure and the next guest then we are sorry about that. I hope the bag you mentioned was outside the house as we sure always deposit our garbage outside on the hedge on collection days. We left two weeks before you arrived and there were other guests in the house before you.
We wish to extend my utmost gratitude for your kindness in opening up your home to us.
We had a lovely time in your house – it was truly one of our most favourite holidays!
Waking up every day to that beautiful view from your balcony and falling asleep to the sound of the waves crashing softly down below – it was absolutely breathtaking! Your home is set up so nicely with sufficient space and all the amenities are in working order which was fantastic!
Thank you for sharing your bit of paradise with us – we passed our days by building sand castles in front of your home, snorkelling, swimming, visiting the weekend markets, eating at the weeknight markets and having one too many icecreams at Wigmores!
We look forward to staying at your home in the near future!
Kia Orana Shayne,
we were also honoured to have you and your family as guests. We were very happy with how you treated our little place with care and understanding for all the things that require workarounds which makes you a perfect guest for any host everywhere. Yes those ice cream cones at Wigmore's are dangerous as they tend to make them extra large if children are with you. We too look forward to have you again. All the best, Marcus, Evita and Haumea
If your dream is to spend a holiday in a house at the beach this is the perfect way to do it. The beach was just below the house and the deck is overlooking a lagoon. There is a supermarket within a walking distance with all necessary supplies.
The description and pictures found on airbnb site were accurate. Neighbourhood was safe and friendly.
Ev and Marcus were very forthcoming and helpful (they even helped us book a taxi from the airport) and the house was great! We had a very relaxing 9 days there, snorkelling almost every day and seeing thousands of fish just outside. Everything was clean and neat and as described. The beach is very nice and very few people pass by there.
The only downsides were the shower (which is a bit temperamental - sometimes hot, sometimes cold) and the bicycles we rented from them (which were a bit worn down).
We would happily go there again.
Glad you liked your time in our place. sorry you had a bad experience with the bikes, I believe the chain broke in one when you were using it but this is just bad luck. We always tell people that the bikes are quite old but work just fine although you can't use all the gears in one of them but since there is only straight flat road in Raro it doesn't normally matter.
We offer it to our guests because it's nice to have an alternative to the car or bike and without a hustle of renting it.
We ask for a small cost sharing / contribution to cover small repairs (like the chain) and because when we leave the bikes in the house they rust so we need to replace them sooner. You can have newer bikes from a rental place but then you need to be prepared to pay 3 times as much and go through a bit of a hustle of renting it and returning it on time.
The shower - well it's partly a "beauty" of being on the island, the power is mightily expensive and the gas system works like this, I can tell you we stayed in some 4 and 5 star resorts and it took a while for the water to heat. We will look into this anyway, thanks for letting us know this one.
Hope to see you again and thanks for everything, best - e,m and H
About the Host, Ev
I am Polish, my husband is German. He has been working and living here for the last 13 years. I lived in Australia and new Zealand and three years ago came to Rarotonga on my way from Tahiti to New Zealand. it was supposed to be just a short stop over but I have been living here ever since. 2 months after I came we were engaged, soon after married and last year gave birth here to a little baby girl.
We love the island, the lifestyle, culture and the attitude people have and it is the best place to bring up a happy heathy child. people here love babies and babies are just part of their life, they do not turn their lives upside down because a new person arrived, becoming a parent is the most natural thing. Someone told me here that in Cook islands a house without children is like garden without flowers.
We both travelled a lot and our wee one, just a 6 months old now travelled around the world. She has been twice to New Zealand, Thailand, around Europe, Stop over in LA and is a great little traveller, loved meeting people and seeing new things.
We are happy, easy going and respectful. We love our little place. We go to Europe for a couple of months each year and would like to have people staying in our place. We hope that we can become friends with our visitors and so we will make all the effort to make their stay here comfortable and great as we would love to have them come back if they turn out to be respectful and responsible guest.
Enjoy our amazing little slice of paradise
