The space

Set back from the street and hidden behind a nondescript wall, you pass through a blue gate and enter a large graveled front garden.

Beyond the door lies an expansive home garden and large double-size lap pool nestled among jungle greenery.

The multi-winged home features stone-clad walls, casement wrought-iron windows and doors, and cement and wood decorative floors, with, industrial stainless steel fans throughout and soaring ceilings of 5.40 meters or 17 feet 8 inches high. Ambient lighting, all with dimmers, set the perfect get-away mood at a touch.

A formal entry flows easily into living dining library and kitchen spaces, with large openings for gracious transitions. Three grand French doors open onto a lush garden of native, fragrant plants like yellow Oleander, Chaya, and passion fruit on the vine. A favorite haunt of hummingbirds, the garden is anchored by a majestic Ceiba tree, an important symbol in Mayan mythology.

Off the library is a passage leading to the master bedroom suite lit with industrial lighting reclaimed from a ship. Luscious curtains separate the master bedroom suite from the library for maximum air flow.

The master bedroom has a queen size bed, a chest of drawers, and ample illumination for midnight reading.

The master bathroom has an extra large polished cement shower with a custom-designed limestone sink. An unseen transom overhead completes the airy feel and adds natural glow during the day.

A second bedroom is a private retreat separate from the main house, opening onto the private back garden and pool. It also has a queen size bed in an all white room surrounded by flowing curtains and birdsong. Local Artist Katrin Schikora makes the ethereal sconces that flick light about.

The second bathroom is reached through the garden patio and is not en suite with the second bedroom. It serves as a bathroom for the guest bedroom, and also, for post-pool use. It has a floating ceramic-vessel sink, and a strong rain shower head with excellent water pressure.

The kitchen is fully stocked featuring brand-name stainless steel appliances by Samsung, Cuisinart, Krups, and Bosch, and custom-designed lighting and cabinetry.

Off the kitchen is a fruit and herb garden. Make agua de chaya and passion fruit smoothies with the bounty of herbs and fruits from the garden.

What a wonderful home in really interesting city. We are a family of four - our children are quite small - and Giovanna was a fantastic host. She shopped for us before we arrived, gave us great info on where to go, and generally made sure we had everything we needed. We all loved the pool, and chilling out in the very peaceful garden. And Merida is well worth a visit - Giovanna's house is lovely, and she's a fabulous host.

Giovanna made us feel extra welcome in her absolutely stunning house in Merida. We really loved every bit of the house from the open and airy feel to all stylish details. It felt like we were staying in a luxurious and hip boutique hotel! As a host, Giovanna was always extra helpful with any questions we had and had so many excellent suggestions of things to do in the area. The location was also perfect. We all fell in love with Merida so much so that we hope to have a family home there one day. We really enjoyed walking through the charming streets with faded coloured walls and visiting the many places that Giovanna recommended including Maiz, Canela y Cilantro where Lili served us the most amazing blue corn enchiladas And, also, the Slow Food market on Saturdays was fantastic for picking up local products and the tastiest tamales. Another recommendation we also really enjoyed was the energetic local vibe at La Fundación Mezcalería, great for mezcal cocktails and dancing. Merida was also a great location for many enjoyable day trips. We really enjoyed swimming in the many cenotes in the area. And, our highlight was a trip to the serene setting of the mayan ruins at Uxmal which we thought was far better that the touristy Chicén Itzá. Giovanna's house is not only an exceptionally beautiful place to stay but also a fantastic location to truly have an amazing holiday experience in Mexico.

Set behind a wall on a very unassuming street, this was an absolutely beautiful property. The house's open design and huge living room makes the property feel airy and spacious but also intimate. The huge backyard and pool were also put to good use and made us feel like we weren't in a city at all. The place was plenty of space for the five of us staying. The property itself is about a 15-20 minute walk or 5 minute cab ride from the central area of Merida. While the walk over is through a quieter part of town we never felt unsafe or isolated. The street itself was fine for parking cars and the house was very secure when we were away. Overall we had a wonderful weekend staying in Giovanna's home and would highly recommend it to anybody visiting Merida!

Giovanna was extremely helpful. We had not visited Merida before and to have someone familiar with the place give us a few hints was perfect. Now onto the house - WOW! They have done such a beautiful job renovating and the whole play is very modern and clean. The house actually made our trip to Merida very enjoyable. We swam in the pool, relaxed in the hammock, chilled to music and were able to get places very easily. Anyone who is visiting Merida should stay in this house! It is perfect! Loved every minute.

Thanks you ever so much Giovanna for letting us stay in your magnificent place. You can probably see from the photos how beautiful the house is, and it would be hard pressed to find a more impressive place to stay on airbnb. Giovanna herself was a fabulous host: kind, considerate, responsive and full of useful information on all things Merida, thanks again!

Just got back from spending 4 nights at Giovanna's house in Merida. Her home and gardens are truly spectacular and much larger than you would think. The house itself is unusual for my neck of the woods, the northeast of the US, but in Merida, it may be quite common. The house is set behind a nondescript wall on a quiet side street about 8 blocks, 15 minute walk, to the main plaza. There is parking and a very private front garden. Once through the gates, the home is a wonder of beauty, delight, and whimsy. Upon entering the front door, the view of the inside of the home is breathtaking. Open plan, impossibly high ceilings, floor to ceiling walls of glass, dramatic lighting, ceiling fans, lots of comfy seating options, very well equipped kitchen, all with a gorgeous view of front and rear gardens. Giovanna's beautiful design sense is evident throughout. Additionally, the master bedroom and the stunning master bath are in this part of the house. The second bedroom and bath are accessed by going through one of the 3 glass doors from the living room or kitchen out to the rear garden. The bedroom is to the left and the bathroom to the right. Neither room has interior access so you may want to keep this in mind if you are traveling with small children or those afraid of the dark as you must leave the bedroom and walk through the garden to get to the bathroom. I chose to sleep in the outer bedroom and loved sleeping to the sounds of the hooting owls. The bathroom is small but has a wonderful shower, with rain head and vessel sink. Bedroom is very comfy with a lovely view of the garden. The rear garden is positively massive and has a large pool, numerous seating and dining areas, stone walls, plenty of room to meander, all with complete and total privacy. Merida is a wonderful city in a state of graceful decay. On every block, the diversity of homes runs from new renovations to crumbling ruins and Giovanna's street is no exception. However, the city is remarkably safe and we never felt uneasy walking everywhere, coming and going, at all hours of the night. Merida is very laid back and friendly and not once did I experience or witness any aggression of any kind. Very refreshing for someone coming from the cold brutality of the North East of the US. Giovanna is a perfect host and it was an honor to be trusted to be steward of her home for a few days. Her recommendations for dining, drinking, and experiencing the alegría de la vida that is Merida, were spot on and you would be wise to follow her suggestions as she has the knowledge only locals have. We were never steered wrong and have her to thank for some of our fondest memories of the city. She was always gracious and helpful whenever I had questions.
