We booked this apartment with Gilles White in February, 2014. It was my first time using the site and unfortunately, I entered the incorrect dates for our visit. Airbnb charges your card immediately so when my mistake was discovered, I asked Mr. White for a refund.
After several un-returned phone calls and emails to Mr. White, we found Airbnb's Resolution Process and used that. We formally requested a refund, which Mr. White refused. Mind you, this was 400 chf of ours he now had. We had not stepped one foot in his apartment AND we offered that he could retain the cleaning fee (this was MY mistake, after all). We then asked Airbnb to mediate (which is part of the Resolution Process) and even they could not persuade Mr. White to do the morally correct thing and return our money.
By contract, neither Mr. White nor Airbnb are required to refund money in an instance such as this. While Mr. White chose to keep money that he in no way earned, Airbnb did the right thing by this customer and refunded ALL of our money, even the cleaning fee and the Airbnb fee. THANK YOU, AIRBNB!!! Excellent customer service, timely responses to emails and overall, an efficient online booking site. However, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND AVOIDING GILLES WHITE and any/all property he owns and operates. I do not fault him for making money on a property he owns. I DO fault him for extremely poor business ethics and human moral judgment.
This apartment could not be in a better location! One block from the RER (train to CDG airport) and Metro. 2 blocks from Sainte Chapelle & Ile de la cite- we could walk practically everywhere from this apt! I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the shower doors wouldn't close and came off track very easily. Also, the historic spiral staircase leading up to the apartment was very dark in the evening, but we remedied that by using our phone's flashlight capability. This place was perfect for 2 people. Gilles was able to accomodate an earlier check-in (which we greatly appreciated!). The street on which the apt is located has a delicious creperie and many restaurants and cafes. I would certainly stay here again!
Unfortunately we had to cancel our trip due to my son becoming ill.
I have very mixed feelings about this rental. the apartment itself was ok - clean and perfectly located (heart of prestigious Saint-Germain, and only one block away from RER station that only takes you 20 minutes to CDG), with a nice layout of a converted studio. comfortable for a couple or 2-3 friends, but definitely not enough to accommodate 5 people as stated in the ad. the pictures were a bit deceiving, the place in fact looked smaller. NB: the same bedroom was shot twice with different lighting and bed linen set so it might appear as a separate sleeping place. (it's not!) there were couple things broken in the apartment: one of the sliding shower doors was off the rail and impossible to close, leaving the gap for water to run on the floor, while the shower head itself was simply gaffer-taped to the holder. there was a coffee table with broken legs in the center of the living room too, with a hand-written note about not using the legs (?). also, even though it was quite warm in Paris when we were there, the apartment seemed to be quite cold and dark. however, all this could be understood and forgotten (at the end, it's old lady Europe!) if not for the unresponsive host Gilles, with whom we started having problems at an early stage of our reservation. unfortunately, we couldn't get prompt replies from him, neither before the check-in nor after, so we were forced to involve Airbnb customer support into our communication. some requests (like the one about giving us at least one extra set of keys, as we were 3 friends, traveling in and out of the apartment separately) were completely ignored. being a host on Airbnb myself, I found this kind of approach to your tenants odd and upsetting. I must admit, if that would be my first time renting through Airbn (like it was for my friends traveling with me), I would think twice before doing it again *(
This apartment is located in a bustling, vibrant area one block from the Seine. It's in a quiet block with typical French features with large opening windows onto a courtyard, wooden floorboards and exposed beams. It is slightly noisy next to the school but it's not really an issue. The only criticisms are that the couches are incredibly uncomfortable and you wouldn't want to sit for any length of time on them! The other thing is the shower which works but is taped up and the position can't be adjusted and the shower screen doors do not slide. The kitchen is compact but useable with a dishwasher and washer/dryer.
Communication with Gilles was good apart from a miscommunication about the check in time.
Overall this is a great place to stay and in an area which makes Paris accessible by foot or the metro.
Great apartment and location. Was a perfect fit for what I wanted on my recent trip. Great light and apartment has a good feeling to it. I will definitely be back.
Gilles is very friendly and was easy to communicate with (speaks English, available by phone and email). He accommodate meeting us at an off-time for check in and is based nearby.
The apartment is lovely - newly renovated, lots of space, full kitchen equipment and bedding, wifi...its a huge space for the neighborhood!
The location was also great: central location - St. Michel is a lovely neighborhood - reminded me of the village in New York (a taste of back home) - its very young, tons of restaurants, bookstores and right around the corner from Notre Dame.
Overall, the place was great. I have to highly recommend it to anyone making short jaunts to Paris - basing out of St Michel is so convenient and fun. Gilles is a gem!
Great host. We had a great experience. Spent very little time at the apartment….. :)
I enjoyed my stay at this flat. Excellent location, and everything was in order. The construction others mentioned in reviews was not disturbing at all during my stay.
