The Space

A 1920's beach house located in the up-market Prout's Neck area of Scarborough, just 7 miles from the foodie heaven of Portland, Maine with its wonderful restaurants, pubs, shops, museums, sports facilities, and day voyages on Casco Bay. The house is just one block back from one of the prettiest beaches on the gorgeous Maine coast, 1/2 mile from another, and 5 minutes walk from the iconic Black Point Inn.

This quaint and rustic cottage was originally built in 1886 as a summer home. Many of the original features of the home remain giving it a timeless romantic feel. The house is within walking distance to all that Prouts Neck has to offer. Quiet Scarborough Beach is a stone's throw from the front door and has miles of beach to explore with the ocean waves crashing on the sand. Ferry Beach is on the bay facing Pine Point and Old Orchard Beach with white sand and calm waters. A short walk or bike ride away, the Black Point Inn offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a wonderful bar where you can watch the sun set over the Western Beach. Take the exceptional cliff walk around Prouts Neck to Winslow Homer's Studio, or spend an afternoon exploring the Bird Sanctuary. At home, sit on the screened in wrap around porch and read a book or just relax after a day at the beach.

The cottage has two bathrooms, one with a shower and the other with a four claw tub and shower fitting. There is a living room, dining room, kitchen and large screened in porch on the ground floor, and the three bedrooms on the second. The two double bedrooms have a queen and a full bed respectively, the third bedroom has two twins.

The back yard is fenced in for your furry friends to enjoy along with you, and the deck has a table and chairs with a parasol. The washer and dryer are located next to the kitchen, and the living room has a TV and a Blue Ray player with a selection of DVDs. There is free wi-fi.

The back yard has a charcoal grill.

Please note we can only accommodate rentals beginning or ending on a Saturday in July and August.

If you prefer Maine's gorgeous Western mountains (6 miles from Sunday River ski area) check out our other Airbnb listing or our sister establishment The Sudbury Inn in the four season resort village of Bethel, Maine.

Guest Access

The whole house is yours.

Interaction with Guests

We'd love to chat during the booking process, and can be as available as you wish. We'll try our best to be here to welcome you, but if not the house can be accessed via a lock box. We will always provide you with a back-up telephone number of someone in the immediate neighbourhood should we be unreachable in the case of an emergency.

Note to Guests

•Hosts like us want to know who our guests are. We enjoy seeing people. Post a profile photo of yourself (not your dog or cat) and write a bit about yourself and who you are traveling with. A novel of your life story isn't necessary; just write about what you think someone meeting you for the first time would want to know.

•In your profile please include your phone number in case we need to contact you urgently.

•Please verify your ID. Airbnb is going to require you to do this eventually, so do it while you aren't pressed for time. This shows you value trust in our community. (See https://www.airbnb.com/help/question/450 for more information about Verified ID.)

The Neighborhood

Apart from the beaches, the Black Point Inn, the amazing cliff walks, Prouts is calm and quiet and feels incredibly safe - fall sleep with the windows open to the sounds of the waves hitting the beach 200 yards away. Do abide by the strictly enforced 25 mile an hour speed limit though, and watch out for cyclists!

Please see the "Guidebook" section for recommendations on things to do/places to eat.

Getting Around

Prouts is easily accessed by car, and nearest bus routes are about 4 miles up the road. Portland Jetport is about 10 minutes away, and we're more than happy to recommend local taxi firms if you need them. Our dead end road is popular with cyclists, and connects to the Eastern Trail that runs from Kittery to Portland.

Other Things to Note

New this year: a gorgeous shower addition to the downstairs bath, an upgraded furnace for copious hot water, queen bedroom complete with black-out curtains, a sofa bed in the living room, revamped screen porch AND a clamming license!

Please note we can only accommodate rentals beginning or ending on a Saturday in July and August.

This is an old property redolent of the golden years of New England. But it's not squeaky clean and modern like a hotel, so if that's what you are looking for this might not be the property for you.

House Rules

Please note we can only accommodate rentals beginning or ending on a Saturday in July and August.

PLEASE no smoking in the house or yard.

PLEASE close and lock all doors and downstairs windows whenever you leave the house.

PLEASE leave the house as you found it – it’s our personal space and we have no cleaning staff, just me. For example, if you move furniture, etc., put it back in its original place.

PLEASE put the trash and recycling out for collection on Fridays by 7 am; often we have guests arriving the next week and it’s nice if they have a clean slate (can)!

PLEASE be considerate to our neighbors: no house parties or fireworks; keep noise to a minimum between 11 pm and 7 am.

Well-behaved dogs are very welcome with advance notice at no additional charge. Please inquire: our insurers have made us adopt a "pet policy" and we would be delighted to send you a copy.

The house is not really suitable for small children, but older kids/teenagers will love it!
