We has a very nice stay! You will get a much better sense of true Costa rica by visiting this area a little out of la fortuna. Great breakfast and book the amazing horse backriding to cascade by local rancher. The reserve with butterflies and frogs was great learning to allow a more informes trip. The local soda, mercado and café ventana will make you think about moving here!!!! Arenal observatory Trail !!!
Costa Rica fantastic
Thank you Gwen. I appreciate the idea of drinks from the kitchen but does not make much sense when there are mini bar refrigerators in the rooms stocked w/ Imperial beer, Cuba Libre, Smirnoff Ice and bottled juices. If the kitchen were closed due to no one here to supervise, then drinks would not be available. Bottled water is not necessary as our potable water comes directly from the springs of our mountains. Most guests just fill their water bottles up from the kitchen sink.
I had the daunting task of planning a week vacation for my family of 6 (4 boys, ages of 16-25) along with one of my son's girlfriend. We picked Costa Rica, a destination that we had never been to and I immediately scoured Airbnb for a place to stay. For the first half of the trip we wanted to go to the rainforest and see the volcanos....Hummingbird Nest B & B looked perfect.
Ellen was wonderful before we even got there; answering all my questions promptly and even booking us a time at the hot springs! Once we arrived, the place was exactly as it was described. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate the days we were there to allow us to see an unobstructed view of the volcano. Ellen was a perfect host; she was there when we needed her, but also gave us our privacy. Full of information and suggestions as to what to do. The breakfasts were wonderful and different each day we were there. We would venture out during the day and return late afternoon for a soak in the hot tub. In the evenings after dinner out, we would hang out around the kitchen table, sharing our pictures and days activities, playing cards, or planning the next day's activities.
The 9 km road to Hummingbird Nest is unpaved and rough riding....definitely manageable with a 4 wheel SUV. After a few times on it, you get used to it....part of the adventure. As a prior review mentioned the walk from the parking lot to the accommodations is a long, winding, steep one.
I would definitely recommend Hummingbird Nest B & B if you are looking for a relaxing, quiet, serene place. Also, would recommend the Chocolate Plantation tour!
The Hummingbird B and B was the first leg of our journey. Ellen was most welcoming and gracious. The rooms were clean and beautiful. The wall of windows looked out to the most beautiful garden. We were in the middle of a beautiful rainforest with beautiful birds, flowers, lizards, and insects. What a way to start our first trip to Costa Rica. Pura vida!
We researched the area and knew we wanted to be close to the rain forest and we were! Ellen greeted us upon our arrival which was very nice. Ellen knows the area well and helped us with making arrangements for tours and dinner reservations. The breakfasts were delicious, always including wonderful fruit. The outdoor shower was great! We loved being close to everything while staying in a beautifully serene guest house surrounded by birds and flowering trees.
If you want a quaint place in the rainforest near Arenal, then this is the place to go. It is close to La Fortuna (but not too close - La Fortuna is a tourist trap), and Ellen was super helpful in giving us tips to navigate the area. Tall windows in the room look out to the rainforest, and so does the hot tub and kitchen (where we got a great breakfast). The road in is bumpy but I was expecting much worse based on the other reviews - it's not off-roading, it's just a dirt road with a lot of potholes and any sedan can make it through if driven slowly. Highly recommend this place!
The place has a nice view of the lake, but not directly from your room. Also, the place is kind of far from the main road. The room was nice but there was a smell of moisture and it was not very clean when we got there. Also, you have to walk through a path that goes up and it's not accessible for people that have problems walking, however we were able to enter through a hotel that's right next to the room.
Apart from that, the breakfast was great and José was very polite and helpful.
Prime location, 10 min drive to Arenal Volcano and about 30 mins from The Springs Resort & Spa, where we enjoyed a day of hot springs, river tube riding, rock climbing and an animal tour. You can see the volcano from the B&B, our rooms were clean and welcoming. You wake up hearing animals and are surrounded by the rainforest. The hammocks outside were a nice touch. There is a restaurant located right across the street with authentic costa rican food.
Only downside was that there was no hot water, we showered with cold water both days. Also be prepared to walk up the pathway where the rooms are located, the B&B is located on top of a hill, it definitely gives you a daily workout.
Unfortunately, we did not have a chance to meet Ellen but Chefe and Maria were amazing hosts! They cooked us breakfast every morning and it was ready by 7:30am. The breakfast consisted of pancakes, fresh fruit, freshly baked bread with butter, coffee, yogurt and cheese - muy delicioso!
Overall, great location and hosts were amazing. If you are looking for a place that is close to the Arenal Volcano this B&B is the place for you.
