This place was the first and best place out of many where my family and I stayed in CR. Here are some great things about this place:
-The place. It's on top of a hill, and the walk up is through a beautiful tropical forest. It has a hot tub. Beautiful view. Cozy Hammoks. Cleaned every day. Breakfast, delicious and cooked by Maria, a local that helped out at the Bnb.
-El Castillo. I reccommend staying there multiple days, as this cozy town grows on you by the hour. It is a little out of the way, and has a strong family feel to it: everyone knows each other, is super friendly and welcoming. Not overrun with tourists which was very refreshing.
-Anna. Anna is a photographer from Pennsylvania whom helps Ellen (whom, unfortunately, we didn't meet) during the summer months. She was incredibly accomodating and kind. For instance, one night the electricity went out in town because of a storm, and she cooked dinner for us and we hung out in candle light.
This place is perfect for anyone looking to stay away from big hotels and for an authentic experience. Absolutely reccommend!
Ellen was a wonderful hostess and the Hummingbird Nest was a great way to experience Arenal. The B&B was near Sky Adventures, the Arenal Observatory and many other great experiences and restaurants that Ellen suggested. She helped book us for two Sky Adventures and EcoTermales, which were all amazing. Breakfast every morning was delicious and prompt. Couldn't have asked for a better stay.
The Hummingbird Nest and El Castillo was a cool, welcome respite after our HOT week in Santa Teresa (Nicoya Peninsula). We were espcially glad to be in El Castillo once we saw the touristic sprawl that is La Fortuna, the more popular lodging alternative.
Breakfast was great--always fresh fruit, and the kids loved the pancakes. I'm an eggs guy myself, and wished for a little more protein in the offerings.
Rooms were sufficient, but as a traveling family (four adults, two kids), it would have been great to have connected suites with some common space, as we usually find on Air BnB.
Ellen was helpful and friendly, and the rooms seemed a decent value.
We has a very nice stay! You will get a much better sense of true Costa rica by visiting this area a little out of la fortuna. Great breakfast and book the amazing horse backriding to cascade by local rancher. The reserve with butterflies and frogs was great learning to allow a more informes trip. The local soda, mercado and café ventana will make you think about moving here!!!! Arenal observatory Trail !!!
Costa Rica fantastic
Thank you Gwen. I appreciate the idea of drinks from the kitchen but does not make much sense when there are mini bar refrigerators in the rooms stocked w/ Imperial beer, Cuba Libre, Smirnoff Ice and bottled juices. If the kitchen were closed due to no one here to supervise, then drinks would not be available. Bottled water is not necessary as our potable water comes directly from the springs of our mountains. Most guests just fill their water bottles up from the kitchen sink.
I had the daunting task of planning a week vacation for my family of 6 (4 boys, ages of 16-25) along with one of my son's girlfriend. We picked Costa Rica, a destination that we had never been to and I immediately scoured Airbnb for a place to stay. For the first half of the trip we wanted to go to the rainforest and see the volcanos....Hummingbird Nest B & B looked perfect.
Ellen was wonderful before we even got there; answering all my questions promptly and even booking us a time at the hot springs! Once we arrived, the place was exactly as it was described. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate the days we were there to allow us to see an unobstructed view of the volcano. Ellen was a perfect host; she was there when we needed her, but also gave us our privacy. Full of information and suggestions as to what to do. The breakfasts were wonderful and different each day we were there. We would venture out during the day and return late afternoon for a soak in the hot tub. In the evenings after dinner out, we would hang out around the kitchen table, sharing our pictures and days activities, playing cards, or planning the next day's activities.
The 9 km road to Hummingbird Nest is unpaved and rough riding....definitely manageable with a 4 wheel SUV. After a few times on it, you get used to it....part of the adventure. As a prior review mentioned the walk from the parking lot to the accommodations is a long, winding, steep one.
I would definitely recommend Hummingbird Nest B & B if you are looking for a relaxing, quiet, serene place. Also, would recommend the Chocolate Plantation tour!
The Hummingbird B and B was the first leg of our journey. Ellen was most welcoming and gracious. The rooms were clean and beautiful. The wall of windows looked out to the most beautiful garden. We were in the middle of a beautiful rainforest with beautiful birds, flowers, lizards, and insects. What a way to start our first trip to Costa Rica. Pura vida!
We researched the area and knew we wanted to be close to the rain forest and we were! Ellen greeted us upon our arrival which was very nice. Ellen knows the area well and helped us with making arrangements for tours and dinner reservations. The breakfasts were delicious, always including wonderful fruit. The outdoor shower was great! We loved being close to everything while staying in a beautifully serene guest house surrounded by birds and flowering trees.
