About this listing
The Red Brick House is in the Uphill neighborhood of Nelson, a cool and sometimes kitschy area with an eclectic mix of people and many Victorian era homes like ours. 200m from Gyro Park with a superb lookout point on the city, a swimming pool for kids and a play-picnic area. 5-10 min walk to downtown (5 min downhill, 10 min up!), the main street and Osso Negro, the ultimate coffee shop where the locals go for organic treats and fair trade java.
Upstairs loft apartment in a newly renovated and restored heritage house for holiday rental. In the heart of Nelson's historic Uphill district, within walking distance of the town center (5 min), Gyro Park and Pool (2 min.), Lakeside Park Beach (20 min.), local bus (1 min.) and Mountain Station biking trails (15 min. ride up, 3 min ride down!!). It has taken us 20 years to truly do what we wanted to with this house- open up the 9 foot attic and build a loft with a beautiful lakeview, making a cool and chic space for a summer or winter holiday. Whitewater Ski resort is a 22 km drive, Ainsworth Hot Springs 47 km.
The house has one double bed, two single beds and a sofa bed. Private parking, a shed and basement storage for skis or bikes, a large yard, fully equipped bathroom and kitchen; bedding provided. Entrance is through the front door on Silica St. Minimum stay is now 30 days. Please contact us and we can explain why.
Come discover a town with a fascinating blend of hip, quirky, unpretentious and progressive minded people. I have lived in many places and few compare for the quality of living and the creative energy amongst its local population.

The house is a duplex that is divided up-down. the space available for our guests is the upstairs, 1.5 floors with the main area having a bedroom-kitchen-living room-bathroom and the upper level a 20x10 loft with a great view of the lake (!)
Interaction with guests
Please note that we have a caretaker who meets our guests upon arrival
and departure and also does the housekeeping. It is important to contact her in advance (we will provide you her contact email and phone number) so that a time can be set. Otherwise the default time will be 17h00 on the day of your arrival, to allow cleaning to be completed (our ad says 13h00 check in time- this is possible but it needs to be confirmed in advance please). Hopefully this will avoid either party having to wait at the house unnecessarily.
City Bus (service is actually quite good for such a small town) passes in front of the house
Debra is the name of the woman who takes care of the house and our guests when we are away. She lives out of town and has two other jobs so it is important to contact her as much in advance as possible to arrange your check in time with her, since she is not available 24-7. The best way to reach her is by email, which I can send to you once a booking is made.
Skis, bikes, sports gear must go in the basement or storage shed. No shoes or boots inside the apartment please- leave them at the bottom of the stairs. We have permanent renters downstairs and ask that you be respectful of them- quiet times are from 23h00-07h00 at all times.
We now have a 30 day min stay. Contact us and we can explain more why this is the case
I taught high school 20 years ago in BC and since that time Nelson (both the town and the house I bought) has been a long term project and dream for me, and later my wife Danielle. I've been a climbing instructor, volunteer project coordinator in Africa and Latin America, motorcycle mechanic, text corrector, property manager, flight attendant and goalie coach and it seemed like half the people in Nelson were way more eclectic and interesting than me! Such a cool and welcoming vibe; I knew I wanted to keep roots there. My wife (who is an airline pilot) and I, plus our two teenage kids, live in Quebec City in a great downtown triplex that we've renovated with space for guests. It has allowed me to park the car and walk or ride my bicycle all year round, with the summer festival, the winter carnival and the old town just minutes away. We feel very fortunate for the opportunity to live in such beautiful places and hope you can share in some measure by staying at our red brick house on Silica or with us in downtown Québec City.
