The Space

My partner and I share a two-bedroom two-bathroom apartment in a high-rise downtown. We're in the middle of the Central Business District, next to the transit center.

Attractions within a ten-minute walk include the stadiums Ford Field, Comerica Park and Joe Louis Arena, the second-largest theatre district in the united states including the Detroit Opera House, Music Hall, Fox, Fillmore, Elizabeth and Gem Theatres, over 150 bars and restaurants, Cobo Hall, home of the International Auto Show, Hart Plaza, home to Movement, Detroit's electronic music festival, Campus Martius Park, one of the top public spaces in the nation, two casinos, the region's flagship YMCA, amazing architecture and history, the Greektown district, and the trendy Corktown neighborhood.

Each of the bedrooms have their own private bathroom and are located on opposite ends of the apartment with the common areas in the middle. One of them is occupied by us. The available room pictured here contains a queen-sized bed, desk, walk-in closet and dresser, and its bathroom contains a tub with shower.

I love introducing people to the city, running a service called Backseat Detroit Tours. I also help people to "live, work and engage" in Detroit (email hidden) for D:Hive, our city's welcome center. My partner is a veterinarian. We're in the suite on the opposite side of the apartment, separated from the available suite by the common area which contains the living room, kitchen, dining area and West-facing balcony.

The Rosa Parks Transit Center, one block away, is the terminus for the city (DDOT) and suburban (SMART) bus systems and also a stop for Megabus and the Transit Windsor Tunnel Bus to Canada. Greyhound is a ten-minute walk. The Amtrak station is four miles up Woodward Avenue, and the bus to connect to it ends here as well. The building is attached to the Times Square People Mover stop, a monorail serving downtown.

We're pretty social and often spend time with our guests when it's possible to do so. My partner often works nights, so we can be up late, but the apartment features concrete walls and almost all sound comes from the street and not from adjacent rooms.

We have a PC hooked up to a projector with a surround sound system that can be used for iTunes, Netflix, video games, DVDs, etc. Wi-fi is provided.

There's a convenience grocer, pharmacy, and a laundry facility in the building.

Smoking is allowed on the balcony.

When you book, please let me know what time you would like to check in as well as whether you will need to park a car.

  • Joseph was an awesome host & he explained everything clearly. Also, the parking was very convenient & a brief history of Detroit was given when we arrived. The place is located very conveniently near Comerica Park & several blocks from the fist sculpture. I would definitely recommend the place. Thanks for accepting my friend & I on my first air bnb booking!

  • Joe is a way into Detroit. Whether or not you want to take one of his tours (which would be a good idea) he is more than happy to share his thoughts on the city and very helpful in guiding you in the right direction. He is very social and an interesting acquaintance.

If you are new to strange and enticing Detroit and don't know where to go for what, a bit of guidance is definitely needed.

The room is clean and bright, with a fantastic view from the 22nd floor and you even have your own bathroom. Being in a downtown building it is the perfect place for sightseeing and for sensing the slow, but certain recovery of the city.

  • Location was ideal and Joseph was a great host. Luckily for me, my zipcar reservation was right in the building's garage. The apt set up was ideal as the room is set up like a suite,

  • Hey guys,
Joe is a TOP adress to stay with in Detroit! The flat is located very central downtown, you get everywhere in a 10 minutes walk. On the roof you have the chance of getting a perfect overview about some parts of Detroit!
Joe works (email hidden) and is very helpful and happy in giving advice and showing his city. We found him very nice and hat even a few interesting discussions about Detroits changes and its cultures. In contrast to our fears, Detroit seems to be improving and rehabilitating a lot. Within the flat you have your own comfortable zone with bedroom and bathroom. Internet works pretty well, you can wash and dry your clothes.

  • Thank you Joe and Matt! You were so lovely and very helpful!
We had a great time in Detroit.
And the apartment building was such a great experience.
Also it was in a perfect location. It was so convenient and easy to get from there to any other neighborhood in no time.
Hope to return to Detroit someday.
    All the best!

  • Joe was extremely accommodating during my stay in Detroit! I stayed at the apartment for an entire week, and although I was gone for much of the day and evening for a conference, I really enjoyed my conversations with Joe. The guest bedroom is more like a suite, so there is plenty of privacy for the bathroom and the bedroom if your choose. The location was my favorite part--it was extremely convenient to get downtown and to the Renaissance Center as well as do any touring near the sports arenas (Comerica Park, Ford Field) and is an easy walk to the vibrant Midtown neighborhood. Joe is also extremely knowledgeable about the city and its history, and I highly recommend considering a tour with him while you are in town visiting. I wish every city I visited had someone like Joe to serve as host! Highly recommend staying here!
