The Neighborhood

- Colle Val d' Elsa , near Siena
Too busy to run to the most famous San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and Montepulciano , many go before the walls of Colle Val D'Elsa thinking that the city does not deserve a visit.

Instead, Hill is one of the villages of the surroundings of Siena precious , and it has some corners and curiosity not to be missed .

First of all , it is the " City of Crystal ", a centuries-old craft tradition (now also industrial ) led the crystals of Colle Val D'Elsa in the world . 85% of the crystals produced in Italy and 15 % of the world are from here.

The windows of the artisans of the center are an irresistible temptation for those who want to take home a unique souvenir , valuable (and expensive), while for those who want to learn more there is a Museum of Glass.

Between a purchase and a look at the windows, you can admire the village and the castle, which is accessed from the Bridge of Bell, one of the most picturesque corners of Colle Val D' Elsa.

From here you enter the ancient heart of the Hill, with the Palace of the Captain of the sixteenth century , the Palazzo Buonaccorsi (XV century ) , Palazzo Giusti (XV - XVI century), and the tower-house where he was born the famous architect Arnolfo di exchange (XIII century).

- Abbey of Monte Oliveto , near Siena
Founded in 1313 by San Bernardo Tolomei , a member of one of the most powerful families of Siena and strong observer of the Rule of St. Benedict ( Ora et Labora ) , the Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore was founded on a hill and is defended on three sides by insurmountable precipices . Currently the Abbey is home to the Benedictine Congregation of Monte Oliveto , and houses the Institute of book restoration . contains a rich collection of herbs.

- Montalcino, near Siena
Montalcino , from its hill upon which rests the fourteenth-century fortress , able to dominate the valleys dell'Ombrone and Asso .

Its history has seen alternating moments of peace and prosperity in periods of violent conflict, but the fortune of the city has always been to be in a prestigious area for growing grapes ; and its production of wines such as Rosso, S. Antimo and the famous Brunello di Montalcino territory made the famous and celebrated around the world.

The city is still surrounded by walls built in the thirteenth century and strolling along its streets , between artisan shops and small cafes , you can admire the Town Hall, the Bishop's Palace , home to the Museum of Montalcino which houses important works of art Siena from the twelfth to the nineteenth century ; and yet the churches of Sant'Agostino and Sant'Egidio St. Francis. Travel a bit ' out of town, Castelnuovo Abbot , you can leave enveloped by the magical atmosphere surrounding the Abbey of St. Antimo , commissioned by Charlemagne in 781.

- Abbey of San Galgano, near Siena
The Abbey of San Galgano is a sight that takes your breath away : it is said of many monuments, but for San Galgano this is no longer true.

Imagine a church with a Latin cross plan with three naves, 72 meters long , 21 wide , with the outer walls still intact , but ... homeless. This Cistercian abbey , in fact , everything is left standing , except the cover. Built in 1218 , in the fourteenth century it reached moments of great splendor thanks to the imperial privileges and immunity he enjoyed. After the splendor came the decline, which reduced the monastery to ruins but always majestic.
A few steps away , on the hill of Montesiepi , there is the sword in the stone stuck by Galgano Guidotti , a noble arrogant and violent seized by religious conversion , stuck it in the ground as a sign of renunciation of violence and to create a cross on which to pray .

There are many similarities between San Galgano and Gawain , one of King Arthur's knights . Who knows San Galgano was not one of them and this is not the famous sword in the stone ...
