About this listing
It’s much more than a single room, a little less than a whole house. Welcome to the Pierce Street Suite, which occupies the entire top-floor attic of a 1896 Queen Anne Victorian, right in the heart of San Francisco’s uber-requested neighborhood, the Lower Haight / Duboce Triangle.
First, the space you’ll be occupying: bright and airy, clean and cozy, we've just remodeled our attic floor, a project which was completed in October 2012, and had been originally executed for the daughter of the house, who picked up and returned to Italy in November. of 2012. She married the Italian twice in 2014 (once in SF and once in Italy) and a granddaughter was welcomed at the end of March.
Her loss is your gain. Ask me about it when you get here over a glass of wine; it's a good story.
This attic is...well, everything you'd want a remodeled Victorian attic to be: sloped ceilings, lots of skylights, with original redwood flooring and walls. There's a modern, deluxe bathroom with a huge tiled shower. There's also a small but serviceable kitchenette with a mini-fridge and microwave, so you can make coffee, tea, drink wine, heat left-overs from San Francisco's wonderful restaurants and eat snacks. There's a separate bedroom with a cozy sleeping nook, with a super comfortable queen-sized bed and ample space for clothes. The main living area includes a work space with writing desk, loveseat (that pulls out into a twin bed), and a bookshelf full of books, many of which are in Italian. The space is perfect for 1 or 2 people, who appreciate quiet and privacy, but also enjoy having a local host around. While the attic can theoretically accommodate three people (using the love seat pullout or a single futon), the third person is generally limited to a child over the age of five.
I was born in S.F. and have been living in this house since 1976. There's a private washer and dryer in the basement should you need them. Sometimes--not always--there is a very shy dog named Clipper, so anyone allergic should know this. But she's very sweet.
Now, the neighborhood. Objectively, it's probably one of the city's best locations: the Lower Haight is easy walking distance to the Haight, the Castro, the Mission, the Fillmore, Hayes Valley. Two blocks to the left is the spacious, sunny Duboce Park, and two blocks to the right, the legendary Alamo Square with its Painted Ladies. There's more public transportation than you will know what to do with: buses and streetcars will easily take you downtown, to Golden Gate Park, or to the Marina / Chrissy Fields.
The Pierce Street Suite is a very special place. It was created with a lot of love, and this house has been occupied by the same family for more than 35 years. Since I am now an empty-nester, I often have out of town friends and/or family members staying in the main part of the house. I look forward to meeting you and making your stay in the World's Best City something to remember and cherish.
Other Things to Note
The attic is designed for two adults so the third person is normally limited to a child over the age of five.
California is in the midst of a serious drought so I ask that you shower quickly and be aware of your use of water.
Please treat my house as you would your own.
I'm a little compulsive re. lights and heat being turned off when no one is around.
No smoking please.
Since the attic sleeping area is right above master bedroom, shoe removal is appreciated.
There are space heaters. However, please do not use a space heater and the microwave at the same time.
Have a wonderful visit.
The attic room is fabulous! It is even more spacious than it appears in photos. Very comfortable, classy yet down-to-earth and homey at the same time. Lots of natural light and skylight windows you can crank open for ventilation gives the space a light and airy feel. The neighborhood is great! Very convenient to public transportation -- about one block to an N-Judah stop -- so you can get anywhere you want to go in the bay area via the Muni trains, busses and BART. Get a Muni Passport (1, 3 or 7 day-- the 7 day is on $35, and you can get on any of the Muni train or bus lines, plus the cable cars). Neighborhood is safe and walkable. Good restaurants and small grocery stores very close by, with a Safeway and Whole Foods within reasonable walking distance. Beautiful small parks in very easy walking distance, with Golden Gate Park (main entrance) a little over a mile away. Jane is great! Very helpful and had good tips for sightseeing. It was our first Airbnb experience and I am already hooked. It is so nice to feel like a "local" rather than staying in a hotel packed with other toursists. I definitely left a Piece of My Heart in San Francisco and when I return to claim it, I'm definitely staying at Jane's attic room!
Vielen Dank, Jane!

Jane is a lovely host! My husband and I are so glad we booked with this listing. The neighborhood is central and relatively close to all the places we wanted to see on our first SF trip. The attic is beautiful and really felt like home to us during our stay. We had a rough start to our trip when our flight was delayed but Jane was very accomodating and understanding. We know where we'll be staying next time we're in San Francisco! Thanks Jane!!
We had a lovely stay in San Francisco. Janes house is in a fantastic location and easily accessible to everything you'd need. The info list she left was like our bible - we went to a restaurant every night from her recommendations and The Grind for breakfast which was yummy! We even bumped into a lovely neighbour and as we walked to the front door he introduced himself. San Francisco is not somewhere I'd like to visit again if I had to stay in the centre so if you're thinking of visiting I definitely recommend you book to stay here. The loft was perfect for us and very clean
Jane's place was perfect for my mother and nephews' short stay in SF. Jane was a great host and made them feel very comfortable, even leaving them with snacks in the refrigerator. The attic room is very cute with great decor and in a great location for exploring the city. Overall, a comfortable and pleasant place to stay after being out and about all day. Thanks again, Jane!
Jane was a welcoming host with a lovely home in a beautiful location. We found it a great base for exploring San Francisco with Jane offering helpful tips for using public transport, local restaurants and shops. The kitchenette complete with lovely breakfast offerings and treats was great.
We had a wonderful stay in Jane's Attic suite. Its beautiful, spacious and the pictures don't really do it justice. Jane is a lovely host who is often on hand for a chat or with some useful information on things to see/do. The chocolates and snacks she left in the fridge were much appreciated. Jane's house is in a nice quiet neighbourhood just down from the bustle of upper Haight St with a park at the end of the road if you feel like sitting in the sun. There are some great places to eat in drink only a few footsteps away. This was our first stay using airbnb and it couldn't have been better - Thanks Jane!
About the Host, Jane
I'm an enthusiastic bicyclist who works as a family lawyer to keep myself in bike socks. Born in San Francisco, grew up near Stanford University, and moved around a lot before I got back to San Francisco in 1976. I've raised two children in this house and they've always claimed they grew up in the best neighborhood in San Francisco.
Since both my children live elsewhere (but have left their hearts in San Francisco), I'm now occupying this 4-story Victorian on my own--sometimes accompanied by my very shy dog, who prefers the Sierra foothills, where I often go on the weekends. I love meeting new people, but can assure you that you'll have plenty of privacy, as the Attic Suite is on the top floor and is quite separate from the main house.
I travel often to Europe to visit my daughter (here we are in Italy a few years ago), and spent two years living and teaching in Africa. This is a wonderful city and a dynamic, friendly neighborhood that I feel fortunate to live in and share.
