Oscar is a nice man and he was very helpful. The accommodation is ok, but only for 4 people.
We spent a night at Casa Balbi and had a comfortable stay. It isn't the easiest place to find but is just a few minutes away from Santa Elena town. The apartment is nice and comfortable with all of the amenities you'll need. We also had various tours pick us up right from our doorstep.
The surroundings at Casa Balbi are just serene. There is so much greenery, peace and quiet. All in all, this was a very nice place to stay at.
This was our first trip to Costa Rica and finding our B&Bs proved challenging even with a GPS. No one uses addresses there like we do in in the U.S. We called Oscar from a restaurant 45 minutes from his house, and he directed us to the grocery store on the main street of Monte Verde and met us there so we could follow him to his place. Super accommodating! Our goal was to visit Monte Verde Cloud Forest and Oscar's place was ideal. He arranged our canopy/zip line tour and the bus picked us up right in front of his house. It was quiet and we liked watching the horses grazing on the hillside. Around 10 pm the town's power went out for about 30 minutes so we were treated to an incredible star show without the street light. We gave it 3 stars instead of 4 because the bed was too firm for us, and the shower to chilly. That seems to be typical though in Costa Rica. If you decide to drive to Oscar's place, be sure to rent a 4 WD. The road is extremely rough and we were lucky to make it in our little 3 cylinder rental.
Mr. Oscar Sanchez is somebody we should all meet and get to know. What a man! His hospitality was beyond words. Not only we enjoyed the stay in his clean house but also enjoyed the fact that he kept calling and confirming all the activities we had already booked. Last day he came and dropped us in the bus station.
What we learnt out of our trip to Costa Rica is that having a good host is more important than anything else.
We are four travelling adults from the United States. We spent two wonderful nights with Larry and Oscar at Casita Balbi. Larry was an outstanding concierge. He spent considerable time talking with us and finding out what types of things we wanted to do while we were in the area. He was able to sign us up for tours with pick-up and drop off right at our door. He also told us about things to do and see for the remainder of our trip. Their home is slightly out of town which was great. Peaceful and beautiful setting. With the full kitchen in the four person unit we were able to dine in or take a short drive to town for dinner. Larry is also tied in to the local art and music scene and passionate about their music, local history and all aspects of mother nature that surround their area. Two days well spent. Thank you Larry and Oscar. Pam, Barb, Craig and Carl
Larry and his father Oscar were friendly and really helpful, providing local knowledge, maps and a head up that found us some toucans. They were very accommodating, bringing us pots and pans and whatever we needed to cook, etc. and very responsive to ideas and feedback. The room was a rustic building on a farm and there's plenty of widlife inside and out! And that's what most people come to Monteverde forWe watched hummingbirds visit the garden. It's possible to do a long walk to the Santa Elena Reserve, and the bus leaves a few minutes away for the Monteverde Reserve, Curi Cancha Reserve, Cheese Factory, Orchid Garden, and much more. We had a great stay.

Retired in Monteverde. Our home in on site with 10 acres of farm land. It is so beautiful to live here and to enjoy the outdoors, we are very fortunate to have this opportunity in life and to also be able to share with others the beauty of Monteverde! For us it has always been so easy to help our friends that travel to Costa Rica to visit, we have helped on arranging travel in other areas of the country and to work out transportation or help in any way that we can with our local knowledge. We look forward to showing you our hospitality and share the wealth of this rich area in biodiversity.
