The Space

... and Local Flavor. Adjacent to the Nature Reserve, on a hilltop in Barrio Monte Carmelo; sleeps 2-6 with 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2 large wrap-around terraces with an outdoor dining area and built-in grill. Our beautiful, architecturally-designed home offers incredible views in all directions with breezes to match. Wake up to unobstructed views of the Reserve and the island of Culebra, and even St. John and St. Croix on a clear day, or have a cocktail on the front balcony while you watch the lights of Vieques and main-island Puerto Rico twinkle in the distance. The countryside location is in the center of the island so you can be just about anywhere in 10-20 minutes — from the island's best beaches to restaurants and shopping. Our Viequense neighbors are friendly and respond in kind to a smile and a wave. Friendly dogs, wandering chickens and free-roaming horses are all a part of day-to-day life in Monte Carmelo, so if an insulated resort-like experience is what you're looking for, then our house is not for you. But if you are looking to experience real-life Vieques in the comfort of a safe and stylish house, then we have no doubt you will love it here. Free wifi and hard-wired computer access. The high-season rate is $220 per-night; If only 1 bedroom of the 3 is used with the house, the per-night rate is reduced to $200. In low-season, the cost is $175 per night for the house.

  • We just spent the most wonderful few days in Vieques! Perri was a great host, sending us guidelines to the house, as well as tips to enjoy the island that were absolutely spot-on and saved us time and money for sure.
The house is so so so beautiful, airy and comfortable. The decor is lovely, and the views, especially from the master bedroom, are spectacular. The sunshine in the morning is particularly wonderful. The garden is lovely and lush, we even picked pomegranates from the trees for snacks.
The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking, and we ate almost every meal at the little table on the terrace outside the kitchen. What a treat!
The house also had everything we needed for the beach, including towels, a cooler, snorkel gear, and even floatie toys.
The neighborhood is pretty secluded, up on a hilltop overlooking the jungle. a great place to forget about the rest of the world. There are stray dogs around, and they come looking for scraps, but they are not dangerous. They do bark quite a lot at night time. Also the wind from the ocean, though it cooled us off and smelled divine, made some noise at night also. What we missed sleep we more than made up for with the relaxing experience of the house and the island in general.
I really can't wait to go back with a few more people! Only two of us went this time, but six could very comfortably stay there. It is a perfect place for a romantic, secluded getaway, or a group party-vacation.

    Response from Perri:

For future guests: Many of the residents on Vieques do not tie up their dogs or horses which is why you'll find them roaming throughout the island. It's part of the island culture. Monte Carmelo is a Viequense neighborhood and the area pups are indeed owned by residents. They are friendly and cute, but we recommend not feeding them to try to keep them at their own homes.

  • This house is breathtaking, forget windows, there are doors everywhere that open up to beautiful views and a cool breeze. I stayed here as a getaway with my best girlfriends for my bachelorette and it was just what I wanted. It was relaxing, and ultra comfortable. Merriam the house keeper was super accommodating after check out my friend had forgot her passport and ID, Merriam mailed it to me, thanks! We made friends with the neighbor Abe and he played the guitar for us, we had choir going, it was so much fun! We bought groceries and made breakfast every morning, we ate on the balcony over looking the mountains it was quite the experience.

  • The house is beautiful - the pictures are great, but the house is even nicer than what's conveyed in them. We really appreciated that beach chairs, an umbrella and a cooler were available to use. It made our beach days more comfortable.

The view is amazing and it comes with nearly ever-present breezes that keep the house cool. The area is off the beaten path, yet still convenient to town, beaches and Esperanza.

Perri made booking easy and she checked on us during our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. Miriam was very helpful and also checked in to make sure everything was good for us.

On our last day, we started talking about when we could go back. This place is that nice.

  • From the booking to our departure, our stay at the Dormilón was superb. Perri was quick to respond to my booking request and made sure our arrival was made easy. The welcome letter you get has great suggestions if you've never been to the island before.

The house and property is absolutely amazing--close to some of my favorite beaches. You'll need to rent a jeep to get around. Miriam, who helps maintain the property, is very welcoming and makes sure you have everything you need.

I would never stay anywhere else and look forward to a return trip!

  • We absolutely loved this house, which suited our needs perfectly: one couple in the master bedroom, another couple and their kids downstairs.

Since the downstairs rooms are separate from the main house (no internal stairs), this made it a bit "raw" during rain to travel back and forth. Thankfully it rains very little here. But the night time privacy was nice for all.

The house is BEAUTIFUL. The sitting couches that also serve as beds have spoiled us. The eternal breezes kept mosquitos and flies away and kept us cool out on the deck. We all enjoyed the view we were greeted with every morning (even my 16 year old twins marveled at the views, and they're jaded about EVERYTHING).

The three water hoses were very well placed, allowing us many trips to the beaches: we were able to hose off our feet and legs before stepping into the house. The floors, however, were easy to sweep out, if needed.

Perri and Miriam were great helps with our stay on the island. The information packet is a great source of information, I strongly suggest reading it over when you arrive. You will regret it if you don't, because restaurant and shopping information is great.

  • Staying at Perri's place was a phenomenal experience. Vieques itself was a great destination but staying at Perri's definitely made our week even better, I cannot imagine staying anywhere else on the island. We arrived early on our check-in day and were able to drop our bags before starting to explore the island. The house was exactly as advertised and the interior was as beautiful as the views. The balconies off the first floor and second floor bedroom are awesome and have unbelievable views. She had beach chairs, cooler, and towels which made going to the beach really easy. The grill made it so easy to make dinner on nights we didn't feel like eating out. Additionally, Perri's informational pack was so helpful in navigating the stores, markets, restaurants on the island. If you're planning a trip to Vieques defintiely stay at Perri's place. We can't wait to go back.

  • The pictures do not even begin to do this house justice. This place is absolutely beautiful, secluded yet accessible, authentic with all the comforts home (including Wi-Fi and more importantly, scrabble!). My friends and I, 5 years out of college, were looking for a spring break out of the ordinary and we definitely found that in Vieques. The house is sandwiched between two sleepy towns (Esperanza and Isabel II) almost equidistant. Esperanza, the larger of the two, lights up at night with music emanating from the bars and restaurants on the main drag. We had amazing food experiences in Esperanza, Belly Buttons for breakfast, Duffy’s for lunch and dinner and El Quenepo for a special, more expensive night out (Get the Mofongo!!!). There were several other places suggested that we just didn’t have time for. Both Miriam and Perri offered amazing recommendations for beaches and we found Blue Beach (Bahia La Chiva) to be our favorite but tried to go to as many beaches as possible. We also frequented the W Hotel several times post-beach for a little late afternoon sun and drinks by their infinity pools. Renting a car is mandatory, but affordable! You can be virtually anywhere on the island in 10-20 minutes. It was well worth the money. Miriam was great in preparation for our arrival and was very responsive to queries via text and phone. This vacation practically ran itself, which I think is a testament to the property, the DeFinos and Miriam. I will definitely be coming back!

  • This house was stunning, better than the pictures, and we had an incredible time! We were so happy with our choice to stay at Perri and Jamie's, and will without a doubt stay here agin when we return. My only wish was that we had stayed longer, so we could have spent an entire day just enjoying the house and spectacular views! Love!

  • We really enjoyed staying at this house. The views were spectacular - probably the best on the island! Perri was a very responsive and accommodating host. Our travel plans changed at the 11th hour and we ended up heading to Vieques a day earlier than planned. On the ferry ride over, I called Perri to see if we could get in a day earlier. She was not sure, but she did everything she could (and spent much of her free time) making it happen. We were very grateful to settle into the house after a very long day of travelling. A quick pointer for those arriving at night: make sure you have a good map and understand where the house is located before driving up the hill to find it. It can be very challenging to find the house and the narrow roads leading up to it sometimes look like they will lead you straight off a cliff. Better to know your bearings. Also, we struggled a lot with the BBQ. You will need a BBQ lighter to get it started. I suggest you try this out before buying/preparing your food to avoid any last-minute disappointments. For all your meat and seafood, Bon Provecho is the best store in town. It is pricey, but worth every penny. Perri had recommended it in her house guidelines and she was right on the mark. Perri's other recommendations were also very helpful. We referred to her list frequently during our stay. One final point of clarification - the two bedrooms downstairs are not linked to the upstairs by staircase so you have to go outside to get to them. This may not be ideal for young kids, but would be great for dividing up a large group. The two bedrooms downstairs are separated by a bathroom, and there is a fair amount of privacy between the two rooms. The layout in the main house is best suited for a family or small group, keeping in mind that there is really only one large bedroom upstairs (the master) that spans the entire top floor (with stunning views!) A second double bed is found behind the King size bed, but there are no dividing walls between the two. Perfect for a couple with a small kid. The third bed is in the living room on the main floor with the kitchen and bathroom beside it. Enjoy your stay on Vieques! It is a memorable experience!

  • This is the perfect place to stay in Vieques!

The house is even more lovely in person than in the very accurate photos! I loved how Perri wove together the Spanish revival concrete floor tiles with the fabulous Central Asian, Indian, and African textiles and carved wood furniture pieces. The details were all right on!

The location is central to some of the island's best beaches and the views from the terrace are amazing. The man we rented a car from told us not to bother going out to dinner because we had the best view on the island. . .he was right! I loved watching the sun rising in the morning while listening to the roosters crowing!

The house is well stocked with beach gear (snorkling stuff, beach chairs, etc.), good books to read, and a washer and dryer.

Perri and her house manager Miriam were both very accessible and quick to respond to emails, texts and phone calls. When our flight out was in danger of being cancelled because of bad weather Miriam very kindly waited to clean until we were able to leave just in case we needed to stay another night. Big, big, thanks!

    We will be back!
