Bush Retreat is in Opua, in the Bay of Islands, just one minute's drive from the car ferry to Russell, and about 8 minutes' drive to Paihia. It is a spacious home with three spare bedrooms, two queen and a twin share, with one bathroom and separate toilet, so if we have other guests, the bathroom and toilet will be shared. The garden has a huge lawn with a beautiful bush backdrop. Guests are welcome to use the free wireless internet connection. It is a smoke free zone, but the garden is large enough to escape to for a puff without disturbing other guests. There is ample parking.
The nightly rate includes a continental breakfast, and our kitchen is available at all times for extra cooking if required.
Your hosts are Sue and Ladislav Graczer. Between us we speak a number of languages, including Czech, Hungarian, Slovak, Spanish and German. Ladis enjoys cooking and gardening, and taking his 16ft boat out on fishing trips. Sue is treasurer of the Bay of Islands Travel Club, is a regular at the Opua Cruising club quiz night, swims a lot, and teaches languages in evening classes. We have both travelled widely, and love meeting new people.
We look forward to meeting you.
A coastal walk, a cycle track, both within walking distance.

Susan and Lettie are a warm, endearing couple who were constantly striving to make our visit with them a most pleasurable experience! We enjoyed chatting with them and found Lettie's story about his past life living under a communist regime in Czechoslovakia and his eventual escape to Austria very fascinating! Susan warmly welcomed us on our day of arrival with red wine and snacks. She also spared no expense in preparing an amazing breastfast for us each morning featuring a wide assortment of items too numerous to list separately! They were also very thoughtful as witnessed by their bringing in our swimming attire left outside on the clothesline to dry. The room was very comfortable and we had the unexpected privilege of having the bathroom all to ourselves as there were no other guests during our visit. The location is only 5km from Paihia which offers a variety of dinner choices. It is also a great base for exploring the beautiful Bay of Islands.
We were greeted warmly by Susan and Ladislav and really appreciated a cold drink after our long drive. We had some great chats with both of them. Although we were there only a short time we felt quite comfortable and slept very well. I am quite grateful and impressed that Susan checked our dietary requirements beforehand and catered to them very well (which mean this gluten-free girl could enjoy the delicious breakfast)!
We had a wonderful stay with Susan who prepared fabulous breakfasts. We followed her recommendation for taking the tour by bus to Cape Reinga and had a great day with rain holding off til we were back.
Best airbnb experience!! We had an awesome time with Susan and Ladislav. They are a lovely couple and really caring to make you have a perfect stay. The breakfast is unbeatable and gives the best start for every day. We can highly recommend this accomodation to anyone!
We stayed with Susan and Lanislav for 4 nights over New Years. They were very welcoming, always lovely to chat with, and very knowledgeable about the area. The location in the bush was serene, with the added highlight of hearing kiwis & morepork in the evening. Breakfast each morning was fresh and generous - a great start to each morning in the beautiful Bay of Islands. We also enjoyed meeting the other travelling guests and have made connections sure to last longer than our short stay in Opua. Susan and Lanislav are extremely accommodating hosts and we would recommend their place to anyone heading to the area.
We could not have wished for better hosts - Susan and Ladis made us feel right at home and we enjoyed chatting with them over cups of tea or a glass of wine. They have a lovely home (and garden), and our room was clean, bright and airy. it is in a great location, a short drive away from Paihia and within walking distance of Opua harbour. Each morning a feast was laid out for our breakfast, which was delicious. We really enjoyed our few days here and definitely plan on returning next time we visit the Bay of Islands!

We fell in love with the beautiful Bay of Islands while on holiday with our children. We love the sea and bush, and are enjoying life in the small, friendly community of Opua. We have travelled extensively, usually visiting friends and family in Europe and Australia, but other trips have included campervanning in Northern Territory and Western Australia. Ladis's passions are his garden, cooking, fishing and feeding the flock of quails which visit us from the bush. Sue cannot live without a good book, and good social life. She is treasurer of the Bay of Islands Travel Club, does aquarobics, belongs to a book club and is a regular at the local quiz night at the Cruising Club. She runs a Spanish evening class.
Running the house as a B&B is fun. We have made some good friends, and enjoyed learning from our guests, while making them as comfortable as possible. People sometimes come for a night, then ask if they can stay for week.
The Bay of Islands does not have a local bus service, so if you arrive without your own transport we can pick you up and drop you off at your arrival destination, and at your tour pickup points for a nominal fee, which will be calculated on the mileage incurred.
