Stay off the beaten path at The Cottage Retreat and enjoy a peaceful and authentic Santa Barbara experience down a quiet lane in a guesthouse on the same property as your hosts, happy to point out Santa Barbara's best secret spots!

The Space

Less than a 2 minute drive (or 15 min walk) to one of Santa Barbara's loveliest beaches, The Cottage Retreat is a serene and stylish alternative to the downtown hotel or inn.

The Cottage Retreat is an inviting 900 square-foot 1 bd/1ba cottage perfect for up to two people located on a 1 acre estate with figs, grapes, citrus, peaches, berries, hens, and honey bees which provide fresh produce for you to enjoy while you are here. The cottage offers skylights, french doors, vaulted ceilings, kitchen, living room, bedroom with pillow-top king-bed and the highest quality cotton linens, fireplace, Wi-Fi, Netflix, DVD player w/DVD collection, ipod speakers, CD/radio player, board games, washer/dryer, private garden area, and zero traffic noise. We also include a DIY breakfast (eggs, cereal, milk, oatmeal, fruit, and some type of breakfast bread, usually croissants or bagels), plus tea and coffee.

The cottage is just a few minutes drive to Arroyo Burro Beach, the Mesa, Ellings Park, the bluff walk at the Douglas Family Preserve, and the upscale Hope Ranch area and famous Sunset Point. We are a 5 minute drive to downtown and a 10 minute drive to UCSB. The cottage provides a perfect, secluded home base for your stay in Santa Barbara as well as for day trips to the Santa Ynez wine country, the Channel Islands, Solvang, Ventura, or the Los Padres National Forest.

(While it is possible to visit Santa Barbara without a car, and there is a bus stop 15 minutes walk from the cottage, Santa Barbara is more enjoyable with wheels of your own.)

Guest Access

Our guests will have access to their own private garden in addition to the cottage. All amenities we offer are just for you, we do not share them.

Interaction with Guests

The cottage is a guesthouse on our property so we are usually just a phone call away. Generally, we will be there to greet you when you arrive and we are available during your stay should you need recommendations, directions or anything else. We are here for you as little or as much as you wish. If you want privacy, we are happy to give it to you but if you are the more gregarious sort we always enjoy getting to know our guests - it is one of the best perks of hosting.

The Neighborhood

We live in a quiet neighborhood called "Yankee Farm", which is just two minutes up the street from Arroyo Burro beach and the Boat House restaurant. We are sandwiched between Arroyo Burro beach and Santa Barbara's elite Hope Ranch area. We love our area because it is essentially a "country-like" feel but still very close to town. We live down a small lane so it is very serene and we have few neighbors since the properties here are all at least an acre. Hope Ranch has many horse trails that you can take walks on as well.

We are also very near to the groceries, restaurants, and shops on the Mesa and the beautiful bluff walk along the Douglas Preserve. Elings park is nearby as well and a gorgeous spot for a walk or picnic.

Getting around

Parking is included, we have a designated spot in our driveway for the cottage.

The beach is a two minute drive from here.

We do recommend that guests have a car while they are here as the bus stop is a 10-15 minute walk that includes a hill. Also, Santa Barbara's public transportation system can be slow and frustrating so we'd also recommend a car for that reason.

We are 15 minutes from SBA (Santa Barbara's airport) and 10 minutes from the train station.

Other Things to Note

We love to know a bit about our guests to better tailor our recommendations for you, so please include a brief description of yourselves and what you might enjoy while you're here with your message. Please give us your first and last name. Thanks so much.

  • I stayed at the cottage of Eve a few days for a conference at UCSB. It was an amazing experience to have such an exceptional host like Eve. From the first moment I felt welcome. With all the little details in the house you feel from the beginning that here is someone who is really caring for the guests!
The cottage is really great for a stay in Santa Barbara. The location was perfect for me. The beach is nearby and downtown Santa Barbara is not far away. You will get a fully equipped kitchen and even the fridge was filled! I slept wonderful in the bed.
For my next stay in Santa Barbara I certainly will ask Eve for the Cottage again! Thank you so much!

  • This is a great set up for an extended stay. The place is open and roomy and the host supplies everything you need. There's a lot of attention to detail...it's really as nice as it looks. The bedroom is spacious and the bed is comfortable. It's a very short drive to the beach. Eve and Craig are fabulous guests..very engaging and thoughtful. We took Eve's advice on where to go and had a great time wine tasting in Los Olivos and Solvang. We had a great time and you'll feel like your at home. It's your own little private cottage in Santa Barbara.

  • I can sum up our stay in Eve's cottage in one word....amazing! We were greeted by Eve who I must say is a wonderful woman. She showed us all of the amenities of the cottage then showed us around the property.

She has chickens and every morning we had fresh eggs waiting for us! Directly outside of the cottage were blackberries, raspberries and strawberries which we picked and ate daily. :) There was also a lemon tree. So, of course, fresh lemons every day!

The cottage is decorated very nicely. It had a warm feeling to it. The bed was comfortable and Eve stocks the cottage with everything you need.

It is in a great location close to a popular beach and relatively close to downtown Santa Barbara.

We look forward to staying at Eve's cottage on our next trip to Santa Barbara. :)

  • Perfection! Exactly what my husband and I needed. The cottage was so welcoming and comfortable. It was so peaceful & quiet. We loved the bedroom and slept better at the cottage than at home. The beach was really close and we enjoyed the weather and took long walks on the beach. Eve & Tiana made our experience extra special. The attention to detail was very impressive. We had fresh eggs everyday. Tiana baked fresh croissants and scones for us. We enjoyed ourselves everyday and would highly recommend the Leed's Cottage. We can't wait to go back again.

  • This place is priceless. It is so peaceful, no traffic noises, no power tools, no kids screaming just peace and quiet. The cleanliness is excellent. the decor is totally appropriate for a beach side cottage, simple and not so polished that you feel like you are in resort. There was plenty of breakfast and extra foods and great local information provided.
Eve is a beautiful person, a delight to converse with and then she just left me alone, which was exactly what I needed. She is a gardener, generous and easy going, and knows beauty.
This whole experience was food for the soul. So much appreciated, thank you Eve.

  • I brought my husband here as a surprise for his birthday and our 2 year wedding anniversary. The beautiful drive into the cottage made us feel like we were driving into a heavenly wonderland and added even more to the surprise then I could have ever hoped. We had an incredible time staying here, meeting Eve, the most gracious host, enjoying the fresh fruit from the garden and the fresh eggs from her chickens for breakfast. Our stay was not long enough at all as it has left us yearning to come back again. We can not to wait to journey back very soon! Thank you Eve for opening your home for others to explore!

  • Eve's cottage was absolutely delightful. It is spacious, tastefully decorated, private, very quiet, and it is close to one of our favorite beaches. The cottage is extremely well stocked. The bed is very comfortable, and there were many thoughtful little extras that made this our best airbnb experience ever. Eve and her daughter Tiana have created a perfect place for travelers like us who come to visit family in Santa Barbara. When you read the reviews of this place, you can see that everyone has the same reaction: it's wonderful!

About
Hi, my husband and I have lived in Santa Barbara for 30+ years, and have been married just as long. We have three kids, though all are grown now, or nearly so. My daughter does most of our managing for us for the cottage so you'll likely get to meet her too while you're here. We enjoy traveling (Costa Rica, Nepal and New Zealand are our favorites!), hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling, and are suckers for the perfect high tea (I am originally from England). Welcome to our home town! We hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do. If you have any questions on what might be fun while you're here, which restaurants to go to, etc. we are happy to help if you'd like a recommendation. We will fill you in on all the secret local favs!
