  • Joe and Susan rent a warm and cozy apartment attached to their home, which is perched on the side of gentle valley half-way between Greenfield and Shelburne Falls. Every detail of house and its setting is carefully thought out -- just what you would expect from an architect building a place for himself and his family. Had a lovely four-day stay. Would happily do it again.

  • We reserved Joseph's home for our son and daughter-in-law for Christmas visit, after my husband and I had stayed here in November. As nice as ever for them. They loved the New England scenery surrounding the home and enjoyed their visit as much as we did ours. Would definitely recommend to any couple, or single, visiting the Pioneer Valley area.

  • Would be hard to find a more comfortable place to stay in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. This is a very cozy, warm and well-equipped mother-in-law apartment. It is on a beautiful rural road but yet has easy access to I-91 and Greenfield. The setting is really beautiful. Would be nice to just walk, jog or bike along the country roads. Apartment has a very nice small kitchen, wonderful king bed and nice bathroom. Really couldn't be better!

  • We could not have been more pleased with our stay. Both the property itself and our hosts were terrific. That the apartment and the land on which it is situated are gorgeous should be clear from photographs; they do not lie! And above and beyond aesthetics, the Matteis' hospitality was abundant and thoughtful but always unobtrusive, from the provision of basic foodstuffs to suggestions for things to do. We certainly hope to be back soon.

  • We had a great stay at Josep's apartment. The apartment was comfortable, cozy and clean. Joseph was incredibly kind and accommodating. He went above and beyond providing even some breakfast foods/ toiletries. If we are every in the area we will surely stay there again.

  • We had a fantastic stay at Joseph & Susan's apartment. It is clean and cozy and well stocked. We found everything we needed from towels to kitchen utensils. It's on a beautiful country road but just minutes from town. We would absolutely stay here again.

  • Joseph's home and proprety in Northwestern Mass was absolutely beautiful! Located on a quaint backcountry road, the home offers sweeping views of lush grasses and wildflowers, a pond, and animals from a nearby farm. The guest wing of Joseph's house features a gracious king-sized bed in the bedroom, cozy living room (with an great DVD collection), immaculate bathroom, and well-stocked kitchen. Both Joseph and his wife were friendly and welcoming hosts, offering us useful tips on local happenings! We highly recommend this listing-- and we'd love to go back!

  • Joseph and Susan's place was amazing. We were easily greeted and shown the house we were staying in, told of some local restaurants to go to and things to do. The house had a beautiful living room, and cozy bedroom with tons of windows and sunlight, and in the morning birds chirping! The area was beautiful with rolling hills and farms and we went on some scenic morning walks holding a cup of coffee. We definitely want to come back in the fall! -April 2013

  • What a fabulous place to stay! We loved it and would definitely stay here again. The apartment is warm and cozy. It has every amenity and the hosts were marvelous! They even invited us to a party they were having on Saturday night. Their friends were really nice.

The Shingle Valley is a beautiful part of the world. Very secluded with small family farms here and there. It's sort of like going back in time. We're looking forward to visiting again!

Hi! I'm an architect and my office is in our home. I have primarily worked in Western New England but during my early career I designed several building in Kansas and Colorado. My wife Susan and I live in this rural area of Western Massachusetts, close to Rt 91, with easy access to all that Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, and New Hampshire have to offer. I have my own practice and Susan works in development for a local college. We have an In-law apartment as a part of our home that has been unused, so we decided to try out Airbnb. We have 7 1/2 acres of land, mostly open. Our home has a panoramic view, from above a wet meadow, looking down on a beaver pond, in our "little" Shingle Valley. At night, when the lights are off, it's dark. You can actually see the stars here! Originally our property was part of a larger family farm.
