We love watching the change of the seasons in our little valley. We have countless types and numbers of birds here during Spring-Summer-Fall. Our beaver pond attracts a variety of wildlife to the area, also. And the working farm across the valley has goats, pigs, chickens, turkeys and other assorted barnyard friends. We always see deer, an occasional bear, rarely a moose, and last year a bobcat.
Public transportation is available in Greenfield.

We spent a wonderful week at Joseph's and Susan's lovely apartment. It is hard to imagine a more tranquil setting than the beautiful farmhouse-style compound Joseph designed and built overlooking the small, secluded valley. The apartment itself, although attached to the main house, was cozy and private. The king bed was incredibly comfortable, and we enjoyed our evening serenade of the bullfrogs in the cat tails down in the meadow, as well as the morning sounds of various farm animals from the neighbors farm (just far enough away not to be intrusive). The kitchen is small, but they stocked it with all sorts of nice treats and it had everything we needed. but who wanted to cook, with Shelburne Falls, a gem of a village, less than 15 minutes away. It has two of our favorite restaurants in the whole Pioneer Valley area -- the Blue Rock and the West End Pub. People also told us Gypsy Apple is amazing, but we missed it. We did have breakfast in, and the Gazebo was definitely an amazing setting for that! Another pleasant surprise was how easy it was to access I-91, which is literally 5 minutes from Joseph's front door. We will definitely keep Joseph's on our list of favorites. Well worth a visit.
This place is awesome and my husband and I loved staying here. It is a beautiful tranquil setting that we enjoyed both mornings sitting in the gazebo drinking coffee and eating breakfast with the sounds of birds and bullfrogs. We also saw a fawn walk into the cattails. The grounds are beautifully landscaped as well and we enjoyed walking around the property. We would have loved to spend more time in the area but we had spent the whole weekend at the Green River Festival and hope to be back next year! Joe was very nice and we enjoyed talking with him. The apartment was well stocked with food and drinks for breakfast which was a pleasant surprise and the bed was very comfortable! We also enjoyed the use of the full size refrigerator since we had quite a bit of food and drink that we were hauling to the festival each day.
Joseph was very accommodating in our communication leading up to our stay and gave us a very warm welcome on arrival. The space is exactly as pictured- very clean, comfortable and quiet.
Joseph was a generous host and his space offers a beautiful country-side get away!
This is an exceptional property and we were so pleased that we were able to stay here for three nights in mid-June. Joseph is a wonderful host: friendly, helpful, and attentive to his guest needs. The apartment is on the first floor of the red section of the house. It has its own entrance, leading directly into a well-equipped kitchen (note: no dishwasher or laundry.) The combination living and dining room was well-furnished. The bedroom had the most comfortable mattress we have ever used -- a sentiment of other guests writing in the guest book. The bathroom was sparkling clean and everything worked well. An unexpected touch was a kitchen that was comparatively well-stocked if you arrive, as we did, at the end of the day without the chance to purchase groceries.
We will long remember our stay at this house because of its outstanding grounds which guests have access to. The views were beautiful; the evening chorus of birds and frogs was incredibly serene. The woods lining the final miles of the approach to this house will remind you of a national park.
The near-by town of Greenfield has a surprisingly wide selection of stores. Located at the junction of Route 2 and I-91 it is easy to get to. Deerfield Village is very close-by. The Clark Art Institute, the art gallery at Williams College, and Mass MoCA are only an hour or so away. Access to the Boston Metropolitan area is a straight-forward drive along Route 2.
This is exactly the kind of experience that we all hope for when selecting an airbnb.com accommodation. Book this property.
Absolutely breathtaking setting! Close to everything, but away from any hustle and bustle. We really enjoyed our stay.
The Shingle Valley Apartment was the perfect get-away my parents and I were looking for. Surrounded by green trees, many species of birds, and a charming downtown, we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Joseph & family were friendly, helpful and generous! We hope to come again and send our family & friends.
The description Joe put up doesn't do his place justice -- absolutely gorgeous property. And Joe was amenable and flexible. Sometimes airbnb places aren't all they claim to be. In this case, it was more than we hoped for. Many thanks!
About the Host, Joseph
I'm an architect and my office is in our home. I have primarily worked in Western New England but during my early career I designed several building in Kansas and Colorado. My wife Susan and I live in this rural area of Western Massachusetts, close to Rt 91, with easy access to all that Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, and New Hampshire have to offer. I have my own practice and Susan works in development for a local college. We have an In-law apartment as a part of our home that has been unused, so we decided to try out Airbnb. We have 7 1/2 acres of land, mostly open. Our home has a panoramic view, from above a wet meadow, looking down on a beaver pond, in our "little" Shingle Valley. At night, when the lights are off, it's dark. You can actually see the stars here! Originally our property was part of a larger family farm.
