The Space

The Guest Wing has so much room! In addition to the spacious bedrooms, gallery, and den that are your private retreat, you get an outdoor bonus. This is the only part of New Orleans where you can walk right beside the Mississippi River. Not climb over a wall, or railroad track, Bang! it is right there and you can practically reach out and touch the tugs.

It is a short hop to the action of Bourbon, but quiet at night like a country village. Free parking right at your door is a big plus. No driving around hoping to find a spot to park within a few blocks of your place.

Relax on your porch or in the private, shady backyard.

The Gallery is a wide hallway running the length of the Guest Wing. Both roomy bedrooms open from the hall, not shotgun style like so many New Orleans rentals so guests have plenty of privacy.

Guest Access

Guests have a private entrance at side porch with a security door with screen.

Enjoy morning coffee, or an evening refreshment, on your private porch while catching a glimpse of ships on The River.

This is an " elevated house," constructed as a plantation home 6 and 1/2 feet above grade, probably before the Civil War. Stairs are part of the charm, and give guests a wonderful vantage point from which to see river boats passing from the front, side, and back of the house. Our sincere apologies to people with mobility challenges. However, once inside there are no thresholds or obstacles, and the wide gallery creates a very light and spacious environment.

Guests may sit in the shady backyard in a number of comfortable chairs. Sometimes it is nice to pause for a minute and sit on the the garden bench along your entrance way. We keep a few comfortable, padded lounge chairs stored under the house, and there are lots of other outdoor chairs and tables to help you spend some leisure time reading or visiting in the backyard. A wide variety of birds sing, with especially lovely melodies at dusk and dawn.

While reading that book you have been putting off, remember to look up every once in a while to see the ships going by.

Interaction with Guests

We respect your privacy, but we are happy to visit and share tips about New Orleans over a glass of wine or morning coffee if our schedules mesh. We have enjoyed socializing with guests and, true to the airbnb pattern, some have become long-term friends.

Our meticulous housekeeper, Giezelle, may greet you upon arrival. Giezelle has lived just around the corner all her life and is always willing to help with directions and local information. We are a little on the neat-freak side, and you will discover that the cleanliness of our Guest Wing rivals some of the 5 star hotels. If there is something special you need, we may have it for you, or we can help you find it. Just ask hosts or Giezelle.

The Neighborhood

We love to walk on The Levee!

It is a thrill to be right beside The Mighty Mississippi River. We appreciate the breeze on a hot day and the beautiful sunsets. We keep posting new ones on our photo gallery.

Most of all, we love our neighborhood. The Historic Holy Cross Neighborhood is part of the famous Lower 9th Ward. This area is home to several Mardi Gras Indian tribes and legendary musicians like Fats Domino. Fat's house is just a few blocks over.

The Lower 9 is also home to lots of up-and-coming talent, like award-winning trumpet player Jamarr Allen; the Country-Indie Bands "Hooray for the Riff Raff, and "The Tumbleweeds" If you are lucky, you might catch some rehearsal music 3 doors down when "The Deslondes" are not on tour someplace around the world. Check all of these artists out online.

Recently we had the rare privilege of a 7 night Mardi Gras Indian vigil for one of our Indian neighbors. Chanting and singing came wafting through the oaks each evening. Everyone was welcome to attend the service on Saturday morning. After the funeral, vividly-arrayed Mardi Gras Indians and a brass band led a second line procession through the neighborhood to honor the memory of their brother.

Getting around

Buses run on St Claude Avenue, about a 10 minute walk from the Guest Wing. It is convenient to take the bus into the Quarter in the daytime, but safer to take a cab home at night.

We advise renting a car during your visit because it is economical and you can see more of the NOLA area. Even with so much to do in the city, you will enjoy a trip out to the many bayous.

Guests find that by using the discount sites like priceline and orbitz it will cost about the same as round trip cab fare to the airport to rent a car for 3 or 4 days.

Other Things to Note

The Historic Holy Cross Neighborhood is a feast for the eyes! It is on the National Historic Register. Walking around the blocks near the Guest Wing will take you back in time as you see rare architectural details and fantastic color combinations.

Bringing this area back after "The Storm" was a Herculean effort by homeowners and volunteers and is still ongoing. You will have a special appreciation for the post-Katrina resilience of the neighborhood after your visit.

If you book our Guest Wing By The River we will provide detailed directions. DO NOT USE your GPS without double-checking with us about the route suggested. Many of the streets in New Orleans are still in need of repair, and some GPS routes will be terrible!

  • My wife and I had an excellent experience staying with N & L Hoffman at the Guest Wing. The accommodations were generous clean and well appointed. There was very good attention to details that made us feel welcome and cared for. The entire place was clean and homey with loads of New Orleans charm. Our host was charming and helpful with insights into the area and insider tips on places to check out. The location was great for us. It was awesome to be so close to the Mississippi and be able to walk along the levee and watch the ships. Since our daughter lives here, it's likely that my wife and I will be visiting often. Will will definitely check availability here first

Larraine received us as if we were her guests (as the advert mentioned, "guests wing"), giving us a very warm and kind welcome all along our stay. She shared her passion for her city and her typical neighborhood, just next to the Mississippi.
We were delighted by the appartment and especially by the patio, where it was really pleasant to have lunch or stay to enjoy the calm, the greeny and the bird sing. Moreover, the appartment is just 10 minutes away from the French Quarter.
We recommend it with no hesitation !

  • My husband, parents, and I stayed at the Guest Wing for our first trip together to New Orleans. Larraine's place is everything it is advertised to be and more. Her house is located in a very cute neighborhood that is in the process of rebuilding from Katrina. It is comfortable, well-kept, clean, and cozy, and it (email hidden) to call our home base after a long day of walking around the French Quarter. We really enjoyed exploring the neighborhood and walking up to the levee to watch the barges and riverboats while sipping on a delicious beverage from the Daq Shack.

If you stay with Larraine, you will learn that she is very passionate and knowledgeable about her community. The attractions in the French Quarter are classic, but definitely check out what's going on in the 9th Ward. The best food we ate our whole trip came from Cafe Dauphine and Gerald's (where we ate four times during our stay - best donuts and king cake!).

Larraine is extremely easy to communicate with all around, and gave good direction in the planning of our trip and during our stay. She is also very fun! We shared several meals with her as well as an evening of Zydeco dancing. She made sure that we had everything we needed to make our trip enjoyable and treated us like family. We look forward to the next time we will be able to stay at the Guest Wing by the River!

  • I can't say enough great things about this amazing woman, and her lovely home! From the second you get there, you're greeted with a smile and a hug, and if you're lucky (like I was) a slice of some amazing crawfish pie. The guest wing was beautiful, well stocked, and very relaxing. Right on the banks of the levee, and with a great porch, it was very hard to get me to leave and go into town (I was practically dragged off the porch by my friends!). All in all, this was one of the greatest trips to New Orleans I've had, and after this great stay, I don't see myself ever staying in a hotel again in town!

  • I stayed at Larraine's place with my family, so we were 5 people in total. We had plenty of space, and the beds were comfortable. It was a bit cold though, but I imagine it would be a really nice place to stay during summertime, since there is a porch one can use. Larraine was very nice and friendly and even came with cake for us one evening.

  • Lorraine is extra lovely. She was wonderfully supportive of our trip and freely shared her insights and love for New Orleans.

  • For the money, this is a gem.

Not far from trendy Bywater, the house is also about 15 min from the french quarter and center city with light traffic. I stayed for 6 weeks with two friends and had no issues with the neighborhood; we even had a cleaning service which was very gracious and hospitable. Larraine (email hidden) and was very accommodating to our needs. I would highly recommend this if you want to do NOLA on a budget.

  • We had a wonderful stay here. The house was very spacious and Lorraine left us some great snacks to munch on which was nice. She had lots of blankets and towels. Any time we had any questions she was very responsive and helped us have an enjoyable experience

  • Lorraine made us feel welcome and at home while we stayed the week in the guest wing. It was a very quiet location and it was a very comfortable house. We were able to show our friends the city that we love and we were able to feel at home while we did it! I can not say enough good things about this wonderful house.

Like other professional people who spend time away from home, there is a point where you say "Enough of this..we deserve more" Airbnb gets that. After staying in many boring hotels, plus a few wonderful B and B's, we know what it takes for a really pleasant stay, so we decided to share our New Orleans home with occasional guests through Airbnb. Zyceco Dancing and Eating Oysters top the list of fun things to do year-round. Catching the coolest parade throws, including neck-bending piles of beads, make Mardi Gras way more fun than grown-ups are used to experiencing. Our home is in the vibrant Lower 9th Ward, right by The River. It is a joy to see neighbors rebuilding homes that suffered through the post Katrina floods. The spirit of New Orleans is evident everywhere and is highly contagious. We enjoy the adventure of finding just the right pieces of furniture, and decorating in an eclectic style, making our home as much fun to return to as the New Orleans music and culinary scene. We hope you feel the same way after your visit. Laissez les Bon Temps Rouillez!
