Simply a MUST for anyone wanting to stay in Madison. Where to begin? The location is incredible. A short walk to State St. for shopping and restaurants...also discovered a few great spots on Johnson St. as well (Fontaine design/gift shop, Sophia's for breakfast), just around the block from the house. The wintertime Lake Mendota views from the apartment were gorgeous, so I can only imagine how wonderful it is during the other seasons. The apartment was spacious and we really felt like we had our own "home within a home". The beds were comfortable with great linens, the shower had great pressure and plenty of hot water, and the sectional sofa was a great place to relax after a day of exploring the city.
Sonja and Jim invited us to have a glass of wine with them and we had a delightful time learning more about our hosts, the neighborhood, the city, and sharing a lot of laughs. But we also had complete privacy, as once we were in the apartment we felt like we were in own world. I'd definitely recommend these hosts, especially if you're new to airbnb. You'll be spoiled!
1. The place was not "entire house" as described in the listing, but just one floor of the house. 2. We have a group of five and we informed the host in advance. The host also agreed to accommodate five of us. However, there was no prepared bedding for the fifth guest and my friend sleep with his cloth on the first night. 3. The Internet was EXTREMELY slow that it takes a few minutes to open a page, which mainly ruined our night plan. 4. The queen bed room was very cold because there was no heating in that room. It was in Madison winter. Youn know. 5. The worse experience is that the host didn't tell us in advance that the fifth guest will be charge extra 40 bucks for two nights and on the booking page, we can only select up to 4 guests. The host knew we are a group of five but didn't tell us any extra charge in advance. When we are going to leave, the host required us to give her 40$ cash and her reason was we failed to choose " five guest" online so we have to pay it in person with cash. But the reality is there was no such option on line at all and she definitely knew it. The absence of this option was host's mistake, and as a guest, who already told the host we have five, should not be charged extra money after we already spent two nights in her place.why not tell us in advance? If we know the final price is 40$ more (and all the problems mentioned above), we will surely choose another place to live. It's really a surprise to us. Finally we gave the money to host because we dont want to waste time to argue, but we will never choose the place ever again and we will not recommend it to anyone. Well, maybe yes if you have a group less than four. If you have a large group, be sure to ask the price in advance! Otherwise you never know how much extra you need to pay after you slept over: the price on Internet will be claimed as not the final price and the host won't let you know it in advance.
This mix up was all easily corrected. We do accomodate 5; two people on each queen bed and one person on a twin bed. This is very clear if you look at our description. I would have no way of knowing they each wanted their own bed.
Also, it is easy to type in five people, not just four. We have had groups of 5 before.
No one has ever expected to get a whole house from our description. I believe it was a cultural mistake in the way they read it. Don't think they have had any previous Airbnb experience. I tried to give back the extra $40 dollars since they were upset about the fifth person paying for his two day share. Sorry that it all wasn't great; I believe they don't know how Airbnb works.
Great location, great hosts. We stayed over the Christmas holidays, and enjoyed being close to the lake (and skating at the Edgewater), as well as State Street and the Christmas decorations at the Capitol. Sonia and Jim were incredibly welcoming, they even baked cookies for us with their grandchildren. Would absolutely stay here the next time we're in Madison.
Sonja and her delightful husband have once again made my stay in Madison a pure joy. From the festive holiday decorations to the best sheets I've ever slept in, I want to call this place home.
I use AirBNB several times a year all across the country. And I have never EVER stayed at a place as nice as this apartment in Madison! The place is gorgeous, with super comfy beds and amazing views of the lake. We rented a car but almost never needed it, because almost everything is a quick walk away. Oh, and Sonja even offered to pick us up from the airport, something no AirBNB host has ever suggested. No clue if I'll ever be in Madison again, but if so, I wouldn't stay anywhere else!
Sonja was a delightful and welcoming host, and the apartment was absolutely charming. It was the perfect place to spend our time in Madison!
Everything in the apartment was comfortable, and the kitchen was well-stocked with every kind of pot, pan, and utensil we needed. We will stay here again!
Our family couldn't have asked for more during our extended weekend in Madison. Sonja was a wonderful host and really helped our three kids (5.5 years / 4 years / 2 years) feel at home. The space had a crib, high-chair, stroller, and car seat which we put to good use and helped us cut down on traveling with equipment. She even brought up a laundry basket of toys which our children really enjoyed and kept them occupied throughout our stay. We had the whole 3rd floor to ourselves and was enough room for a family of five to fit comfortably. The kitchen had everything we needed (dishwasher, pots/pans, microwave, full range, etc) and some really nice touches (didn't have to run out to get coffee grounds that first day......Sonja had coffee/tea ready to go for us). She even came to the rescue that first dinner with some bananas for the kids from downstairs. The space was immaculate, bed was extremely comfortable, and had the most amazing view of the lake.
Lastly, Sonja really went above/beyond in supporting our family on the last day of our trip. When our train was ~4 hours delayed our young family had very few options in arriving at the station at the new updated time. Sonja offered to keep us out of the elements as well as transport the family to the station, truly a kind gesture from the heart. Sonja is a great host, her space is wonderful, and we 100% recommend it to anybody visiting Madison.
