The space

Walk directly into Joshua Tree National Park from this “tiny modernist jewel” (Western Interiors Magazine), situated among iconic granite boulders on five untouched acres, right on the border of the Park.

The Modernist Cabin provides unmatched access to the Park in a truly private setting, but is just four miles from the village of Joshua Tree. Designed by Ron Radziner of Marmol Radziner and Associates, this re-imagined homestead cabin is the perfect base camp for exploring the Park, star gazing, catching the spring wildflower bloom, attending the JT Music Festival, rock climbing, or sampling the local arts and music scene.

Take a soak outside in the luxe cowboy tub or relax on the patio with a view as stunning as anything in the Park. On Saturday's, visit Joshua Tree’s Certified Farmer’s Market and prepare gourmet meals in the fully-appointed kitchen, or attend a yoga class in town -- free passes to Instant Karma Yoga in Joshua Tree are provided with every booking, and private yoga classes can be arranged.

Featured in Western Interiors Magazine (“a shack for the twenty-first century”), on the cover of the LA Times Home Section, and in Haven: Cozy Hideaways and Dream Retreats (“a modern house that takes design cues from the land itself”), this is THE place for the discerning traveler in search of the ultimate Joshua Tree experience.

The Modernist Cabin is small (about 400 square feet), so bookings are limited to singles and couples without children or pets. Please take a look at the pictures to decide whether it meets your needs. For those booking in colder months, the shower is partially outside, so it can be a bit brisk. But the tankless water heater provides abundant hot water and most of our guests love it year round. We hope to see you soon!

This place is such a rare and amazing experience-- right on the edge of the park, we saw road runners, quail, and a family of bunnies everyday. It was over 100 degrees everyday that we were there, but the home was always cool and refreshing. At night, the stars and outdoor tub can't be beat!

John and Clea's place was incredible. The beautifully designed cabin had everything we needed, was super comfortable and the setting was spectacular. We never left the entire weekend. Went hiking straight from the cabin into the park and didn't see a single soul while scrambling over the rocks and boulders. Spent lots of down time lounging outside on the covered patio, reading and staring off into the landscape while watching the rabbits, quails, lizards and desert squirrels (or chipmunks?). Love the outdoor soaking tub and shower. The sunset and moon rising over the mountains were gorgeous, especially with the full moon. Wish we stayed another day - it ended too soon!

Perfect. Simply perfect. The cabin is the best place I've ever seen that is perfectly situated to enjoy the natural surroundings. The windows look out to gorgeous views or rocks and flora and wildlife. There are two wonderful outdoor areas as week to enjoy lounging or drinking coffee I. The morning and listening to the birds. The cabin was sparkling clean and

We absolutely loved John & Clea's place!! The cabin was right at the border of the Joshua Tree National Park, so these beautiful boulder rock formations are literally in your back yard. The house has these large glass windows, so this gorgeous view is present everywhere (even in the outdoor shower and tub!). John & Clea were very responsive and the house was extremely well appointed. They even provide bunny chow so that you can attract bunnies and other wildlife to your doorstep. We highly recommend this place to anyone coming to Joshua Tree. Thank you for a wonderful stay!!

This little cabin made for the PERFECT stay in Joshua Tree. It's as close to the park as you can get, we loved exploring the "backyard". The cabin is incredible, by far the best place we've ever stayed. There is more than enough space to live in, and the patios are great spaces to hang out. The indoor/outdoor shower was so fun, and the soaking tub was a great way to watch the stars. Can't recommend it enough!

What a wonderful place, calm and full of life at the same time. You can literally touch the national park and see how it changes. The cabin was very nice, clean and well-appointed. Hope we will come back at least once again. Thanks! P+T

John & Clea User Profile

We moved to Joshua Tree from LA in 2005. John's a former trial lawyer and entrepreneur. Clea's a former fashion designer who owns and operates Instant Karma Yoga in Joshua Tree. Since 2004, we've redeveloped several commercial properties in the village of Joshua Tree, including The Starlite complex which is home to Pie for the People (NY pizza), Instant Karma Yoga and Joshua Tree Coffee Co. The Modernist Cabin originally served as our weekend get-away. It is now used exclusively as a vacation rental.
