About this listing
Beautiful, rustic, well maintained 12th century medieval house in the vibrant village of Le Pouget in the stunning Languedoc region of southern France. Perfectly located to explore the region, Cloche-Piochet is a half hours drive from Montpellier, St Guilhelm le Desert, Sete, sandy beaches, and not much more than an hours drive from the Pont du Gard, Nimes historic colosseum, Carcassone and the Canal du Midi to name a few. French food at its best, local wines, beautiful villages nearby and very friendly locals will make your stay memorable.
As you enter Cloche-Piochet you will immediately be transported back in time as you peek into the ground floor 'cave' double bedroom before ascending the original medieval staircase to the light and airy first floor kitchen/living area with it's hundreds year old roman floor tiles and ancient stone walls. The kitchen is well equipped so you can cook up a storm with the irresistible local fresh produce, or heat up the plat du jour gourmet takeaway that the village butcher's wife cooks up each morning.
The old world ambience continues as you head upstairs to the second floor twin bedroom with its pretty little stain glass window and adjacent toilet and bathroom. Finally, what many of our guests over the years have called the 'view to die for' is at the top of the last small staircase. There, you'll walk through the attic bedroom that opens out onto the petit terrace that looks out over miles of surrounding villages, vineyards and beautiful french countryside. The terrace is a wonderful place to relax after a hard day's sightseeing with a cooling glass of local wine, an array of gorgeous french cheese and whatever else takes your fancy. Watch the sun go down as you linger on for dinner, or head back out in the morning to enjoy your morning coffee and croissants still warm from the village patisserie.
People have lived at Le Pouget for at least 35,000 years and probably for much longer and the village as it stands today is of medieval origin. It is a classic hilltop circulade with houses on narrow cobbled streets circling a central church and churchyard. Today Le Pouget is a vibrant village of approximately a thousand friendly locals. It has a weekly market, two restaurants, a bar, two well stocked epicierie's, a butcher, baker, tabac and more.
Le Pouget is located close to the towns of Clermont l'Herault, Gignac and Pezenas bustling with their great weekly markets and variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. The nearby village of Canet (3km) provides access to the clear, cool waters of the Herault river and it's popular local swimming spot.
A TV for your favourite movies is available - bring your own downloaded movies or TV shows on a USB (format = .mp4, .mov or .avi & .mpeg) & pre-programmed USBs are also available for your use. Please note the TV does not provide access to local or subscription television stations but is only for use with compatible USB formats.
A Nespresso coffee machine is available for your use - coffee pods are provided & we appreciate a donation toward replenishment if you use them.
There is also an iPad doc so you can listen to your favorite music and Wifi is available to keep up to date with emails & what's happening in the world - but unfortunately not for big downloads or streaming movies.
Please take the opportunity to use the picnic set in the upstairs hall cupboard and spend a lazy afternoon or two enjoying the beautiful French countryside.
Interaction with Guests
Happy to provide information and respond to queries about the house, village and the region, including any travel and transport arrangements.
One of the things I love about staying at Le Pouget is having the opportunity to observe and feel part of village life: the morning visits to the boulangerie for the breakfast baguettes, the rush to the boules square after hearing the 'allo allo' to see what home grown offerings are available today, or the soiree (email hidden) followed by dinner across the road at La Comporte.
By far the best way to get around to explore this beautiful region with it's tucked away villages, perfect picnic spots and memory making experiences - is to have your own car. Because the house is located in the oldest, walled 'circulade' part of the village, parking at the house isn't possible. But free parking is available in close proximity and our friendly, helpful property manager Bill will give you the lowdown on parking and everything else you need to know when he meets you at the village on your arrival.
However, if you are so inclined, buses to major nearby centers do stop regularly at the village and the local area is well able to be traversed by motor cycles and bikes.
In good faith we don't ask for a security deposit and in so doing request that you leave the house clean and in good order. We also ask that you replace any breakages that may occur during your stay.
Bill, our very helpful property manager is available to be contacted during your stay should you need him.
The gentleman who greeted us was exactly on time and helpful. Also, importantly Olive had been very responsive with questions before we went to Le Pouget.
Olive's house is a treasure. It has the most magnificent views of the French countryside from the rooftop terrace. This view alone is worth a stay at the house. The house is located at the top of a hill in a very traditional French village with cobblestone alleys not accessible by car but to us that was a part of the experience. The house is located a few feet away from a majestic old cathedral that tolls its bells every hour. We happen to truly enjoy this as it is a part of the entire ambience of the place and transports you to another era. The house is about a 30 to 45 minute drive to the beach and larger towns and even closer to many great wineries. You definitely do need a car to get around and enjoy all the beauties of the area. The house is very clean and large with a large fully-equiped kitchen. There is a lot of very useful literature provided in the house about the village and the area in general. We met Bill by the fountain in the village. He led us to the house and was very informative and enjoyable to talk to. Our brief encounter with Bill set the happy mood for our stay! We definitely enjoyed our stay at Olive's house.
Thanks so much for your lovely review Roobina, it's very much appreciated. We're so glad you enjoyed the house and we share your sentiments about the bell and the village - you certainly know you're in another time and place as you wend your way back and forward from the car park.
All the very best for your future travels.
Bye for now
The house more than lived up to our expectations. It was well equipped and nicely laid out and we loved the roof terrace with its beautiful views. The village seemed typically French and unspoilt and full of character.
Our stay in Olive's home was amazing. The village of Le Pouget is very old with a long history, with things to see on every turn. You have to park your car in the village centre and then walk to the house, through all of the cobbled streets lined with old homes. The home itself is also very old and it was such a treat to stay in such an historic home. It is 3 storeys high with a terrace with the most spectacular view ever! We had a very comfortable homely stay in Olive's beautiful home. Many thanks!
About the Host, Olive
Don't know about you but I love travelling and staying in places long enough to get to know them, the people and the way of life, not to mention the food & wine. Started travelling to France nearly 20 years ago with family and friends and fell in love with it, then decided to buy a village house so that we would have an excuse to keep going back. We didn't realise when we thought to rent to holiday makers that it would also allow us to live other's holidays vicariously by helping them to plan their holiday, giving advice about sightseeing, places to eat, markets, villages to visit and picnics to have. We love our little patch of France and sincerely hope that everyone who stays at Cloche-Piochet loves it as much as we do.
