About this listing
The Big Yellow House is a huge Victorian home near happening Mississippi and Alberta streets and on bus lines running both directions! The Portlandia Room is perfect for students, interns, house-hunters and long-term vacationers!
The property is an old Victorian house, 4 stories high, surrounded by a 6 ft.-tall cast iron fence. We rent rooms on the top two stories. The house has a large eat-in kitchen and family room, workout room and game room. The game room has a pool table, electronic dart board, puzzles and board games, all available for shared use. We have a beautiful electronic foosball table in the family room as well. The workout room has a Vectra On-line 1270 home gym capable of 22 different exercises, a treadmill, and a Reebok recumbent bicycle with an LED screen with games. If you want to play, you have to keep pedaling, though. ;-) There are also two covered balconies. The side balcony is huge and has an outdoor fireplace, gas grill and charcoal barbecue, which guests are welcome to use when we are home. The front balcony is right at the front of the house overlooking the street and is a great place for people-watching. ;)
It should be noted that the photos of the living room and dining room are no longer accurate, as those rooms are now the game room and workout room! We found, over time, that our guests weren't really using the formal living room and dining room, so we decided to put something fun in the rooms that guests would enjoy more. We hope to get the photos updated soon.
Room 303 is on the third floor. It faces west and has affords a lovely view west on Killingsworth. A great vantage point for watching spectacular sunsets! The room has one twin bed, a desk, dresser and heated mattress pad. The room also has Dish satellite t.v., DVR and wifi access, although the wifi signal is strongest in the family room and kitchen.
You will also have full access to the kitchen, fully stocked with pots and pans, dishes and utensils and are welcome to cook in it whenever you like!
Our guests have access to all the common areas (kitchen, family room, game room, workout room, laundry room and balconies) and the kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes and utensils.
We also have several shelves full of games and tons of dvds which guests are welcome to use anytime.
Interaction with Guests
Terence and I hosted foreign English-language students (and others) in our home for about 8 years and have been hosting with Airbnb for over a year now. We are friendly and easy-going, and are very comfortable with a houseful of people from all over! In fact, in the 7 years that we have lived here we have probably hosted over 400 guests!
We recently moved downstairs, so we don't live with our guest anymore, but we come upstairs frequently and still share a lot of the common areas.
Most of our Airbnb guests have been with us long-term, the majority of them students and interns, and they have been AWESOME!! They have all gotten along fabulously and many have forged lasting friendships.
We are in a commercial district surrounded by many of the city's best restaurants and coolest hangouts and sit right between popular Mississippi Avenue and the hip Alberta Arts district. This is a happening place!
There is also a convenience store right next door and a Safeway grocery store, Walgreen's drug store, post office and fast food restaurants all very close-by. The historic North Portland public library and McMenamins Chapel Pub (in a beautiful renovated funeral home!) are just steps away from the house.
Behind the house sits a beautiful old residential neighborhood- a perfect place for invigorating jogs or leisurely strolls. We are just a 5-minute walk from Peninsula Park too, which boasts a beautiful historic rose garden and fountain, picnic areas, a large playground with a sprinkler water play area, tennis courts and baseball diamonds, a basketball court and soccer field, an outdoor swimming pool and a community center with indoor games and activities.
There is something for everyone here and I know you will enjoy your stay!
Buses running both east-west and north-south go right past the house and the MAX is nearby as well, so you can easily get to just about anywhere from here! If you are in a car, we are just 8 blocks from the freeway (I-5) and only a 10-minute drive from downtown and 20 minutes from the airport, which is very easy to get to from here. The Convention Center, Rose Garden (where the Trailblazers play), and Memorial Coliseum are close-by and also very easy to get to (straight down Vancouver Avenue from here) and Lloyd Center Mall, with 200 stores, an ice rink and movie theaters is just down the street from there. We have plenty of Portland brochures and bus information and would be happy to help you with tourist and travel info.
Other Things to Note
We ask that guests bring their own bath towels. We will provide bedding, kitchen towels, and bathroom hand towels (please use for drying hands only), toilet paper, hand soap and cleaning supplies.
Victorian houses have thick walls! Our Wi-fi signal can be a bit patchy in many of the bedrooms, but there is a strong signal in the great room/kitchen and guests will sometimes bring their computer in there to work when they need a really strong signal.
As we host several guests in the same home at once, we need to do our best to ensure that all of our guests feel safe and comfortable during their stay here. All of our rules have been written with that end in mind. We value you and want you to have a wonderful stay here!
We ask that you not drink or keep alcohol in the house. There are two pubs within a block of the house, and the Enat restaurant right across the street serves beer as well, so if you would like to drink while you're here, you have plenty of great options!
Since our guests share a bathroom, we ask that they keep it tidy. We also ask that you put away clean dishes at least once a week and that you leave common areas (kitchen, bathroom, family room) looking as good as or better than you found them (common sense, of course).
Sorry, we don't allow pets.
No smoking in or near the house.
We ask that you not use the oven or stove after 10:00 at night for fire safety reasons. You can use the microwave anytime. Before putting food in the refrigerator, please write your intials on it with the Sharpie pen provided. Please mark your laundry products as well. Otherwise, they may hang around for months after you leave, leaving little room for current guests to store their things!
On one of the balconies we have an outdoor fireplace as well as a gas and charcoal barbecue grill that you are welcome to use when we are home. If you plan to use any of them, please let me know.
Guests are welcome to watch t.v. or movies in the family room, but we ask that you stick to entertainment with a PG-13 or TV-14 rating or below so that everyone will be comfortable. Of course, what you watch in your own room is your business. We also ask that you avoid using foul language in our home.
For fire safety reasons we don't allow open flames of any kind in the house including candles, incense, etc. This is for your safety. You may be a very safe and conscientious candle-user but your neighbor in the next room may not be. Trust me on this; I've hosted over a hundred guests!
